Van Peborgh Lodge is a mountain retreat in Idre, Sweden, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune as a contemporary interpretation of the Swedish log cabin. The architects list the project as 2025. Its defining choices are heavy local-wood walls insulated with wood shavings, a long glazed communal space, and a group of smaller supporting buildings.
A log-cabin idea reworked for contemporary construction
Claesson Koivisto Rune describes the project as “A contemporary log cabin in the Swedish mountains.” Rather than reproduce a traditional cabin literally, the design draws on Dalarna building traditions while addressing the architects’ view that robust traditional log construction alone does not meet current energy and insulation standards.
The exterior timber receives tar-vitriol treatment, while the interior wood is left untreated and visible. Heavy planks of local wood form the walls, arranged in a manner reminiscent of logs. A gap within the wall is filled on site with shavings from the same wood, which the architects describe as insulation.
The designers say this assembly avoids diffusion-barrier plastics and mineral-wool insulation. They also describe the lodge as “in itself a carbon sink.” That is the architects’ design claim, not a quantified lifecycle-carbon result: no independent whole-life-carbon assessment or measured energy-performance figures are established in the available project information.

Roof, eaves and response to the mountain setting
The roof uses wood planks over tar paper. The architects cite heavy winter snow as the reason for its sturdy construction and long overhanging eaves. Those eaves are also a prominent part of the building’s appearance rather than a hidden technical detail.
At the gable ends, diagonal cutaways interrupt the symmetry. The project description says these openings allow sunlight to reach farther into the lodge. Together with glazing at both ends of the central space, they make daylight and views central to the design.

How the floor plan organizes shared and private spaces
The architects describe an east-west central nave flanked by closed, parallel aisles to the north and south. The nave brings the shared functions together, while the more enclosed sections accommodate practical rooms.
- Central nave: Living, kitchen, dining and fireplace functions share the main communal space. Full-height glazing at both ends visually extends it toward the landscape.
- Bedrooms: Two bedrooms sit in diagonally opposing corners, each with one fully glazed side.
- Porches: The remaining corners form an entrance porch and a separate area for outdoor dining.
- Enclosed service areas: The spaces between the nave and the outer corners contain the entrance hall, bathrooms, laundry and storage.
A separate carport/shed and a sauna accompany the main house. The architects call the project a ski lodge for winter and other seasons, but that description does not establish whether the property operates as public accommodation or can be booked by visitors.

Project date, area and named products
Claesson Koivisto Rune’s official project page identifies the location as Idre, Sweden, and lists the project as 2025; the practice’s interiors index also lists it as 2025. ArchDaily’s project search listing instead gives 2024. The available information does not resolve whether that earlier year refers to a design or completion date, or is a listing error, so the architects’ 2025 date is the clearest stated project date.
ArchDaily’s search listing reports an area of 120 m² and names Mosa, Ballingslöv, Nikari, Smaller Objects and Wästberg as manufacturers. These are listing details rather than a confirmed, complete architect-issued specification schedule. A Mosa representative’s LinkedIn post specifically associates the project with the company’s Tide series in Blue Mist, but does not establish the tiles’ exact locations or quantity. These references should not be read as a definitive schedule of installed products.

About the architecture practice
Claesson Koivisto Rune was founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. The firm describes its work as spanning architecture, interiors and design, and reports more than 100 national and international awards for design excellence. That figure concerns the practice as a whole, not awards for Van Peborgh Lodge.
