A burning smell from a washer can come from harmless early-use odors on some new machines, but it can also signal a mechanical or electrical problem. The smell alone cannot identify the failed part. Stop the cycle, unplug the washer if you can do so safely, and use the guidance for your exact model—especially if the odor persists or returns.
What to do first if your washer smells like it is burning
- Stop the cycle. Do not run another load to see whether a persistent burning odor clears.
- Unplug the washer if it is safe to reach the plug. Electrolux Australia also advises turning off the water tap. If you need to drain water, follow the model’s manual and make sure the water and laundry are not hot. Electrolux’s burning-smell guidance gives these precautions.
- Check only what is readily accessible. With the washer off, look for clothing caught between the door and gasket or obvious debris around the seal. Do not open panels or attempt repairs based on the smell.
- Consult the exact model’s Use and Care Guide. Filter access and troubleshooting steps vary by washer. Whirlpool advises checking the appliance guide before following repair steps in its washing-machine troubleshooting guidance.
- Arrange service if the smell persists or returns. Do the same if the washer will not spin or drain, behaves unusually, or has a damaged door seal. Electrolux says a washer with a damaged seal should not be used.
Common causes, based on when the smell occurs
A new washer’s first cycles
Some manufacturers describe a temporary odor from motor coils or insulation during initial use. LG USA says the odor should stop after 10 or 20 full cycles under normal operation; Samsung US describes odor during the first couple of cycles and recommends requesting service if a burning smell occurs after the first two. These are brand-specific thresholds, not a universal break-in period. Follow the instructions for your washer’s brand and model: LG’s electrical or burning-rubber odor guidance and Samsung’s washer odor guidance.
An LG front-load washer on a drying or sanitary cycle
LG describes a model-specific possibility in which the gasket heats during drying or sanitary cycles. It also notes that lint or dust reaching the heater can produce an odor. This explanation applies to the LG front-load context in LG’s guidance on burning smells during use; it should not be assumed to explain odors from other washer designs or brands.
Clothing, debris, or small objects near the seal or inside the washer
Fabric caught between a front door and gasket can be heated or damaged. LG also identifies debris or small rubber items in the gasket, filter, or tub as possible odor sources. Check accessible areas only while the washer is off, and stop using it if the seal is damaged. Use the manual before accessing a filter.

A slipping belt, stuck pulley or pump, or another mechanical fault
A burnt-rubber smell may be consistent with a slipping or worn drive belt, or with a pulley or pump that is stuck. These parts are not present or configured the same way in every washer. The repair reference lists these as possible causes, not as a diagnosis of a particular machine.
Motor, clutch, or electrical control trouble
A motor problem or a fault involving the clutch or control components may also be involved, particularly if the smell comes with failure to spin or drain or unusual motor behavior. Those symptoms still do not identify the failed component; model-specific diagnosis is needed.

Use the surrounding symptoms to decide what to check

When a washer belt might be relevant
A drive belt is only a possibility on washer designs that use one; many washers do not. Do not buy or replace a belt solely because the odor seems rubbery. A technician or model-specific troubleshooting should first confirm the cause, and any replacement part must match the washer’s exact model number. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized appliance service provider if a burning odor lasts beyond the limited initial-use period described for your model, returns after stopping, or occurs alongside a malfunction. A damaged door seal also warrants stopping use and contacting service. No reliable diagnosis of a particular failed part can be made from the odor alone.
