Use thread sealant when a threaded joint must contain oil, coolant, fuel, or gas; use threadlocker when an engaged fastener needs resistance to loosening. Some products are documented to do both, but the right choice depends on the exact engine joint, service instructions, materials, temperature, and whether the fastener must later be removed.
Start with what the joint must do
A threaded fitting in a fluid or gas path presents a sealing problem: the joint must prevent leakage. A bolt or nut presents a retention problem: the fastener must resist loosening. Those functions can overlap in selected applications, but ordinary threadlocker should not automatically be treated as a pipe or fitting sealant, nor should a sealant be assumed to provide the fastener retention an application requires.
Permatex says some high-vibration applications could benefit from both threadlocker and thread sealant. It also advises against mixing a separate threadlocker and thread sealant, and points to its Seal & Lock product for applications seeking both properties. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal instruction for every engine joint. Permatex threadlocker selection guidance
Engine examples: fittings versus bolts
Threaded fittings and sealing joints
Permatex lists its High Temperature Thread Sealant for applications including oil-pressure sensors, oil and coolant lines, fuel fittings, and head bolts that enter through holes. These are examples for that product, not a blanket rule for every sensor, line, fitting, or head bolt. Consult the engine service information to determine whether a particular joint calls for sealant and which product is permitted. Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant
#1 Best Overall
- Locks and seals threaded fittings
- Resists leakage, vibration loosening, moisture, hydraulic fluids and diesel fuels
- Lubricates threads for easy assembly and disassembly
- Parts may be repositioned up to 4 hours after application
- Suggested Applications: head bolts into through holes, oil PSI sending units and sensors, oil and coolant lines, fuel fittings, rear axle fill plug, brake and power steering fittings
Fasteners that need retention
Permatex lists its Medium Strength Threadlocker Blue for 1/4 to 3/4 inch (6–20 mm) nut-and-bolt applications, with engine examples including valve-cover, water-pump, and oil-pan bolts. Those examples do not establish that every bolt in those locations needs threadlocker; follow the service procedure and the specific product directions. Permatex Medium Strength Threadlocker Blue
How to choose a threadlocker strength
When the joint needs retention, match the threadlocker to the fastener and the intended service. Permatex says to consider future removal, bolt diameter, and temperature. Its guidance describes blue as the easiest to remove with hand tools, while high-strength red may require localized heat. The cited Permatex FAQ also flags temperatures above 500°F as a selection consideration; this is a prompt to check the exact product and engine requirements, not a general temperature rating for every threadlocker. - Economical general-purpose fitting sealant
- Outperforms tapes and pipe dopes
- Seals and resists pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems
- Remains pliable at higher and lower temperatures
- Suggested Applications: Air conditioning fittings, temperature sending fittings, hydraulic fittings
Use the engine or vehicle service manual for the particular fastener, rather than choosing by color alone. A grade intended for a different bolt size, service temperature, or removal expectation may not be appropriate.
Check temperature, materials, and fluid exposure
For Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant, the manufacturer lists a range of −65°F to 400°F (−54°C to 204°C) and says it is not recommended for plastics or rubber. Check the current technical data for the exact product and confirm compatibility with the joint materials and the fluids it will contact. Do not assume that a product suitable for one engine fluid or substrate is suitable for all others.

Permatex’s Seal & Lock technical sheet lists chemical resistance to gasoline, oil, water, glycol, and hydraulic fluid. This is a product-specific manufacturer claim; it does not establish compatibility with every formulation, operating condition, or engine joint. Permatex Seal & Lock · Seal & Lock technical data sheet
When a product documented to do both may fit
Permatex describes Seal & Lock as an anaerobic formulation combining thread-sealing properties with locking capability comparable to Blue Threadlocker. The company names engine-related fitting uses for the product. Its technical sheet says it seals to 1,000 PSI and is removable with hand tools. Those figures are manufacturer product claims, not results from an independent comparison of engine sealants and threadlockers; use the current technical sheet and service instructions to decide whether it is specified for the exact joint. Permatex says Seal & Lock is not compatible with plastics or rubber. A hybrid product is therefore not a universal substitute for separate sealant or threadlocker; confirm the joint materials and application before using it.

- Is the joint part of a fluid or gas path? Determine whether the service procedure calls for a sealant, and select one documented for that application.
- Must a bolt or nut resist loosening? Select a threadlocker grade suited to the fastener size, temperature, and expected removal method.
- Does the application need both functions? Use only a product specifically documented for both in that application; do not combine separate products unless the manufacturer and service instructions direct it.
- Will the compound contact plastic, rubber, or engine fluids? Check the exact product’s current technical data for material and chemical compatibility.
- What does the engine procedure specify? Treat the service manual and current product instructions as the deciding authority for the exact joint.
What the published claims establish
Permatex’s 2022 catalog says its thread sealants cure to a pliable seal to prevent leakage caused by vibration loosening, tape shredding, and solvent evaporation. This is a description of the manufacturer’s products, not independent evidence that all sealants perform alike or a comparative finding against threadlocker. Permatex catalog (2022)
