The tree that appears to grow wrinkled green “brains” is Osage orange (Maclura pomifera), also known as bodark. Its brain-like objects are the large fruits produced by female trees—not brains, and not a reason to assume every child will find the tree frightening.

What is the tree that grows “brains”?

It is Osage orange, a deciduous, thorny tree with deeply furrowed bark. “Bodark” is another common name for the species. The spooky association comes from a childhood recollection in a 2019 Treehugger article: writer Christian Cotroneo remembered a tree on his family’s farm that he and his sister imagined as frightening. That is one family’s story, not evidence that children generally fear the tree.

What are the brain-like objects on it?

They are the tree’s fruit, often called hedge balls by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The fruit forms on female trees. NRCS describes it as a fused, round, yellow-green multiple fruit: many one-seeded units joined into a single structure. Their tightly clustered, wrinkled surface is what prompts the informal comparison to a brain.

In its 2011 fact sheet, USDA NRCS gives the fruit’s diameter as approximately 3 to 5 inches and says it is produced in September. The same sheet estimates an average of about 200 to 300 seeds per fruit and says female trees may begin bearing at around 10 years old. These are approximate, source-specific descriptions, not guarantees for every tree or growing location. USDA NRCS Osage orange fact sheet (2011).

Why does it have so many names?

Common names differ by source and region. Alongside Osage orange and bodark, names associated with the fruit include “green brains,” “monkey balls,” “horse apple,” and “hedge ball.” “Mock orange” also appears in Treehugger’s list of names. Osage orange is the clearest name to use when identifying the tree.

Why was Osage orange valued?

The name bodark is traced to the French bois d’arc, meaning “wood of the bow.” Treehugger recounts the wood’s use by the Osage for bows, thorny branches used for Civil War barricades, and durable branches used for fencing. It also quotes Texas rancher Delbert Trew saying, “A well cured bodark post can last for over 100 years unless destroyed by prairie fire.” That is Trew’s statement as relayed by Treehugger, not a lifespan measurement by USDA.

The tree’s thorny growth and fruit can make it an inconvenient choice in some settings, while its history as a source of bow wood and fencing material explains why it was planted and valued. A gardener and author, Cindy Shapton, described using the fruit in fall decorations: “I love to decorate with this green wrinkled fruit, the color and texture add interest to fall decorations,” as quoted in Treehugger. That is her personal decorating preference, not a horticultural recommendation.

Could you plant one without the fruit and thorns?

USDA NRCS describes the species as easy to establish from seed and lists selected thornless, fruitless male cultivars. Those cultivars offer a different set of traits from a seed-grown female tree that produces the conspicuous fruit. The USDA source establishes that such cultivars exist, but does not establish whether they are currently available from a particular nursery.

Is the fruit safe to eat or an insect repellent?

The consulted USDA NRCS fact sheet and plant guide do not establish whether Osage orange fruit is safe to eat, poisonous, or an effective insect repellent. Treehugger’s 2019 story reports a reputation for insect-repellent use and says the fruit’s goo might cause a rash, but those reports are not validated by the cited USDA documents. Do not treat them as medical or pesticide guidance. The available sources do not settle edibility or establish a rash risk.
