Bob Vila reports testing nine brooms over three weeks in eight head-to-head tests; its overall pick was the O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan, and its push-broom pick was the Libman FiberForce Heavy-Duty Multi-Surface Push Broom. Those are findings from Bob Vila’s review, not a new independent test for this guide.
For a construction-minded choice, start with the surface and debris: fine, flagged bristles for dust on smooth sealed floors; medium bristles for mixed debris; and stiff bristles for coarse material on rough outdoor surfaces. Then consider head width, handle comfort, dustpan design, and whether you need to work around obstacles or sweep a large open area.

Bob Vila reports comparing more than two dozen options before narrowing its field to nine, using fine materials such as flour and sand, larger debris such as rice and cracker crumbs, and several floor settings. It assessed pickup, maneuverability, ergonomics, durability, and value. Its inspected page reports a $12–$40 price range, but the publication year was not established and prices change; treat that range as the review’s reported snapshot, not a current quote. Choose the broom style for the space
Angle brooms for rooms and obstacles
An angled household broom is a practical choice for kitchens, hallways, and other indoor areas where you need to reach edges, corners, and around obstacles. A smaller head is generally easier to steer through a crowded room than a wide push-broom head.
Push brooms for open floors
For a garage, driveway, deck, or broad workshop floor, a push broom moves a larger swath with each pass. Width helps cover open space, but does not make the broom better in tight areas. Lobby and whisk brooms for quick, small cleanups
A lobby broom is intended for quick touch-ups, while a whisk broom suits small areas or small amounts of debris. These are convenient for spot cleaning, but a handheld whisk broom is not a substitute for a full-size broom when sweeping a room or garage.
Corn brooms for economical general sweeping
Corn brooms offer an economical all-purpose option. They may be a reasonable basic choice when you do not need specialized bristle tips, a dustpan mechanism, or the coverage of a push broom.

Match bristles to the debris and floor
- Fine dust on smooth, sealed floors: Look for fine fill and flagged tips. The fine ends help gather smaller particles rather than pushing them ahead.
- Mixed everyday debris: Medium fill is a versatile choice for a mix of fine and larger debris on smooth or rough surfaces.
- Coarse debris on rough outdoor surfaces: Heavy, stiff bristles are suited to moving larger material across rougher surfaces. A broom designed for rough pavement may feel too stiff or abrasive for a delicate indoor finish.

Check the dustpan, handle, and fit before buying
- Dustpan lip: A pan that sits close to the floor can reduce the ridge of dirt left at its edge. If the set includes a dustpan, check whether it stays flat when held in place.
- Hair combs: Integrated combs can pull hair from bristles into the pan, which is useful for homes with pets or long hair.
- Head width and shape: A narrower angled head is easier to maneuver around obstacles; a broad push head is more efficient across open floors.
- Weight and handle: Check whether the broom is comfortable to steer and whether its handle length suits the person using it. A heavier or poorly balanced broom can make repeated sweeping tiring.
- Durability and surface: Consider whether the bristle material is appropriate for the roughness of the floor. Bob Vila specifically cautions that the recycled PET bristles on its O-Cedar review pick may wear on rough surfaces.
O-Cedar’s current PowerCorner One Sweep page describes combs on its step-on dustpan and claims over 99% pickup for listed household debris, based on testing at an independent accredited lab, according to the manufacturer. That is a vendor claim tied to its stated debris and test, not a general result for all floors or a finding from Bob Vila’s comparison. O-Cedar’s product details and claim.
Which broom should you buy?
- For one everyday indoor broom: The O-Cedar pick is the most directly supported by the cited head-to-head review, particularly if pet hair and a built-in dustpan matter. Confirm the exact model because the review and current O-Cedar page use different product names and specifications.
- For a large garage or workshop floor: Choose a push broom such as the Libman FiberForce if broad coverage matters more than corner maneuverability.
- For a lower-cost basic broom: The Amazon Basics Heavy-Duty Broom is a candidate in Bob Vila’s comparison, but the available evidence here does not establish its exact current price or a particular test advantage.
- For rubber-edge or silicone sweeping: The Broombi is another candidate from that review; check the current listing and whether its intended use matches your floor and debris.
