The TC500 is a turret with IK10 impact protection and ceiling-oriented aiming, while the BC500 is a conventional bullet camera suited to wall mounting. For a construction site already using Synology Surveillance Station, either can be a fit. Without Synology equipment, RTSP offers a route to stream or record video, but not the cameras’ full feature set.
TC500 vs. BC500: what changes and what does not
Synology launched both cameras on March 22, 2023. The TC500 is a turret camera; the BC500 is a bullet camera. Their principal differences are physical form and installation geometry, not resolution or core detection features.
| Feature | TC500 | BC500 |
|---|---|---|
| Body and typical orientation | Turret; designed for ceiling-oriented installation and aiming (Synology product specifications). | Bullet; conventional choice for wall-mounted or outdoor-style placement (Synology product specifications; Dong Knows Tech review). |

Which body fits the mounting point?
Choose the TC500 when a turret’s ceiling-oriented aiming and its listed IK10 impact rating suit the planned location. Choose the BC500 when a bullet form fits the wall or exterior mounting position better. Neither form factor guarantees a particular view: check the planned camera angle and obstructions at the actual mounting point before fixing the camera in place.
Do you need a Synology NAS or DVA?
For complete camera functionality, Synology recommends pairing either model with Surveillance Station. The BC500 review says full use requires a Synology NAS or DVA running Surveillance Station 9.1 or later. Synology says configuration, image quality, network settings, and firmware updates can be managed in Surveillance Station; it also says these two camera models do not require buying or activating Surveillance Station device licenses.

Using another NVR
Both cameras support RTSP, so an NVR or recording system that accepts their RTSP streams may be able to use them for streaming or recording. That is not the same as full integration: Synology recommends Surveillance Station for complete functionality, and the available information does not establish compatibility with every third-party recorder or that Synology-specific controls and analytics will work there. Confirm the intended RTSP workflow with the NVR vendor before purchasing.
Which AI features are available?
Both cameras support people and vehicle detection and intrusion detection. More advanced analytics are hardware-dependent: the BC500 review says people/vehicle counting, license-plate recognition, and face recognition require DVA hardware, and Synology’s FAQ specifies that face recognition requires a compatible DVA system. Do not assume that every analytics feature is available with a standard NAS or a third-party NVR.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
What happens if the NAS connection fails?
Both cameras can record to a microSD card when the NAS connection is lost. Synology documents cards up to 256GB. Its example estimates about 32GB of video per day at a 3 Mbps stream, which it says allows at least six days on a 256GB card. Actual retention depends on the stream bitrate and recording conditions; this is an example, not a guaranteed duration.
The BC500 reviewer found that footage stored on the card was not directly viewable over the network. Treat edge recording as a continuity measure rather than assuming it provides the same browsing and management experience as a connected Surveillance Station recording.

Power, installation, and jobsite planning
Both models use IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet. A PoE switch or injector is not included. Synology’s BC500 product page also says its compatible 12V power adapter is not included. Plan for the network and power path before installation: Ethernet cabling, suitable PoE equipment or an appropriate separate power arrangement, and a microSD card if you want recording during a NAS disconnection.
- Check the route: Confirm that the planned Ethernet run reaches the camera and that the selected PoE equipment supports the required standard.
- Plan the view: Select turret or bullet based on mounting geometry, then check the camera’s actual sightline for equipment, stored materials, temporary walls, and other obstructions.
- Decide where recordings live: Surveillance Station is the recommended route for full features; microSD provides local failover recording if the NAS connection is interrupted.
- Account for site conditions: Both are IP67-rated, but that rating alone does not establish suitability for every installation condition. Follow Synology’s installation guidance for the particular location.
The BC500 reviewer reported that setup in Surveillance Station took a few minutes after mounting and cabling. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a promise that every site installation will take the same time.

Security, privacy, and support dates
Synology’s launch announcement lists HTTPS and SRTP support, scheduled firmware updates, failover edge storage, and NDAA/TAA compliance for both cameras. These are useful considerations for organizations with procurement or network-security requirements; confirm that the exact compliance documentation meets the requirements of your project.
The cameras support local recording, which may suit a site that prefers video to remain on its own equipment. Synology’s announcement also lists C2 Backup for Surveillance as an off-site redundancy option. Cloud backup is optional; evaluate data handling, connectivity, and any current service terms before relying on it.

Synology’s lifecycle policy lists firmware support for the BC500 from March 2023 through March 2028, and for the TC500 from May 2023 through May 2028. Synology listed a three-year hardware warranty in its launch announcement and current comparison table. Verify applicable warranty terms and coverage for the purchase region before relying on them.
Are the cameras worth their premium?
The value case depends on whether Surveillance Station is already part of the site’s system. An existing Synology NAS or DVA owner can benefit from an integrated camera workflow, local recording, and included camera licensing. If the site has no Synology recorder, include the cost and administration of the required ecosystem in the comparison rather than judging the cameras by camera price alone.
For context, Dong Knows Tech cited a $219 suggested retail price for the BC500 in its 2023 review and reported that the TC500 cost over $200 at that review time. Those are historical review-era figures, not current quotes. The same TC500 review praised ruggedness, image and sound quality, Surveillance Station integration, edge recording, and local-recording privacy; it listed high cost, no included PoE injector or power adapter, no Wi-Fi, no PTZ, and dependence on Synology NVRs as drawbacks. The BC500 review reported successful tests of motion detection, night vision, and edge recording. These are reviewers’ observations rather than independent laboratory benchmarks.
For a construction buyer comparing third-party PoE cameras, compare the complete system cost and feature requirements: camera, recorder or NAS/DVA, storage, PoE equipment, cabling, and any analytics or cloud services. If RTSP recording is all that is needed and the chosen NVR supports the stream, Synology’s tighter Surveillance Station integration may not justify its added ecosystem cost. If Surveillance Station is already deployed and the camera’s form and capabilities fit the site, that integration can be the more relevant advantage.
