Scratchbuilding USS Enterprise (CVN-65): History, Scale and Planning

USS Enterprise (CVN-65), the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, has documented museum models at 1:100 and 1/72. Learn what those precedents mean for a scratchbuilding project.

USS Enterprise (CVN-65)—the U.S. Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier—has been built as a fully scratchbuilt scale model. The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum documents Stephen Henninger’s 1:100 project, while the Naval National Aviation Museum describes a separate Enterprise model at 1/72 scale. Neither record prescribes a scale or provides construction plans, but together they offer useful precedents for choosing and planning a model of this specific ship.

Which USS Enterprise is the subject?

This is the real U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65), not another ship named Enterprise or a fictional vessel. Commissioned at Newport News, Virginia, on November 25, 1961, it was the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command’s ship history.

The carrier deactivated in 2012. On February 3, 2017, it was formally decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register, as recorded by the U.S. Navy. The dates mark different stages: the 2012 deactivation preceded the formal end of the ship’s status in 2017.

Why sources describe 51 years and nearly 55 years

The Naval History and Heritage Command says Enterprise completed 25 deployments during 51 years of service in its Enterprise summary. The Navy’s 2017 decommissioning account describes nearly 55 years of career or service. These are each institutions’ descriptions of the ship’s service; they are not stated as the same measure. The commissioning-to-decommissioning span is nearly 55 years, while NHHC’s deployment summary uses 51 years of service.

What scratchbuilt Enterprise models are documented?

Smithsonian’s 1:100 scratchbuilt model

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum reports that Stephen Henninger built a 1:100-scale USS Enterprise model completely from scratch. The museum says the project took approximately 1,000 hours per year for 12 years. Those figures describe Henninger’s individual project, not a typical workload or a recommended schedule. The museum feature does not identify the materials he used or provide build plans: Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum feature.

Naval National Aviation Museum’s 1/72 model

The Naval National Aviation Museum separately describes an Enterprise model at 1/72 of actual size. It is a different documented model from Henninger’s Smithsonian 1:100 scratchbuilt example; the record does not establish that this one was scratchbuilt. See the Naval National Aviation Museum model description.

How to choose a scale for your project

The two museum records show that Enterprise models have been made at 1:100 and 1/72, but they do not rank those scales, compare their costs, or say which is best. Choose based on the space available, the detail you want to represent, and the quality and consistency of references you can gather.

Planning factor How to use it
Display footprint Estimate the model’s finished length and the room needed for its display base before committing to a scale. The museum records do not compare the footprint of their models.
Detail Decide how much ship structure and visible equipment you want to build and whether you can reproduce that detail cleanly at the chosen size. The cited sources do not compare achievable detail between 1:100 and 1/72.
Reference consistency Check that you can obtain usable, mutually consistent references for the ship configuration you intend to depict. The museum model descriptions are precedents, not construction plans.

As a general modeling option, styrene sheet and strip can be used for scratchbuilding fabricated parts. They are not identified as materials in Henninger’s model, and the cited museum records do not specify a bill of materials.

What the documented example can—and cannot—tell you

Henninger’s Smithsonian model establishes that a fully scratchbuilt CVN-65 has been completed at 1:100 scale. The separate 1/72 museum model shows another scale used for an Enterprise display. Neither account is a step-by-step build guide: they do not supply measurements, plans, material specifications, or a universal time estimate. Use them to frame the scale decision, then develop the references and fabrication plan for your own chosen display.
