Keep hands clear of the cut line, stand to the side of the blade, and use a push stick when the work or feed position calls for one. Never operate a saw with a defective safety device.
Inspect the saw before setting up
With the saw switched off, inspect the blade, rip fence, guard, riving knife or spreader, and anti-kickback devices. Use a blade suitable for ripping, and remove any cracked or damaged blade from service. Do not operate the saw if a guard or other safety device is defective. OSHA identifies blade condition and setup among factors related to kickback (OSHA table-saw guidance; OSHA kickback guidance).
Fit the safeguards for a through-cut
A rip cut that passes through the stock is a through-cut. Use the blade guard, riving knife or spreader, and anti-kickback device where the saw design provides them, and configure them as the manufacturer specifies. For example, Bosch’s GTS1510 safety instructions call for the blade guard, riving knife, and anti-kickback device for every through-cutting operation, with the riving knife adjusted as described in that manual. That configuration is specific to the model; follow the manual for your saw rather than assuming parts or adjustments are interchangeable (Bosch GTS1510 safety instructions; OSHA table-saw guidance).
Set and check the rip fence
- With the saw off, position the rip fence for the desired cut width.
- Lock the fence and check that it is secure before starting.
- Feed the workpiece parallel to the fence so it is guided parallel to the blade. OSHA says this minimizes the potential for kickback (OSHA table-saw guidance).
Use the rip fence—not the rip fence and miter gauge together—to guide the same workpiece during a rip cut. Bosch warns that using both at once increases the likelihood of blade binding and kickback (Bosch GTS1510 safety instructions).

- PRECISION TABLE SAW RIP FENCE UPGRADE : Built from high-strength extruded aluminum, this table saw rip fence extension provides a stable, straight reference surface for cleaner and more consistent cuts. The rigid profile helps reduce flex and supports accurate alignment during repeated table saw operations
- 46" EXTENDED SUPPORT WITH SPACE-SAVING DESIGN : This 46" table saw fence extension kit with featherboards measures 47-1/4" overall and adds support when working with long boards or sheet goods. It functions as a table saw extension and outfeed support without requiring a bulky outfeed table
- VERSATILE 3-IN-1 MULTI-FUNCTION FENCE SYSTEM : Configure the fence for different cutting tasks: High Fence Mode supports tall panels and box work, Low Fence Mode 3/4" helps with controlled thin ripping, and L-Fence Mode supports edge jointing or template-guided cuts. It also works as a thin rip jig and table saw jig for added workshop flexibility
- 8 BUILT-IN T-SLOTS FOR CUSTOM JIG SETUPS: The fence body features eight integrated T-slots for mounting featherboards, stop blocks, hold-downs, and custom woodworking jigs. The included drop-in T-bolts can be inserted directly through the slot opening, allowing faster setup and adjustment without sliding hardware in from the ends of the track
- FITS MOST TABLE SAW FENCES WITH 1-1/4" OFFSET ALIGNMENT :Designed to clamp securely to most table saw rip fences without drilling or permanent modification. The 1-1/4" total thickness provides a clear offset reference
Plan support, stance, and hand position
- Make sure the stock has enough support as it enters and leaves the blade, and plan for the cut end and offcut so neither can snag or fall into the cutting area.
- Keep your hands out of the cut line. Stand to the side of the blade to reduce exposure if kickback occurs.
- Do not feed damaged or unstable stock.
Ripping carries kickback risk; OSHA describes kickbacks as more likely during ripping than crosscutting (OSHA table-saw guidance).
Use a push stick when needed
Keep a push stick within reach before starting. OSHA recommends using one for small pieces and to push stock past the blade. Choose a feeding method that keeps your hands away from the blade; a push stick supplements the guard and other safeguards rather than replacing them (OSHA table-saw guidance).

Follow the saw manual for model-specific settings
Use the blade setup and operating instructions specified by the manufacturer. There is no single blade-height setting established here for every saw and blade, so consult your own manual instead of applying a universal measurement. OSHA’s guidance is written for U.S. workplace safety; requirements may differ elsewhere. For replacement guards, riving knives or spreaders, and anti-kickback devices, verify compatibility with the exact saw model and intended operation in its manual.
