The legs are hollow through much of their length, so a safe, useful build depends on deliberate reinforcement, suitable shelves or rails, and checks for depth, ventilation, stability, and total load.
What makes an IKEA LACK table compatible with rackmount gear?
Hackaday described the fit as an “unintentional” compatibility between IKEA LACK tables and 19-inch rackmount hardware: its 2022 LackRack article. That fit is a useful starting point for a home-lab project, not a certified rack rating. A LACK-based rack makes most sense when equipment is relatively shallow and the total load is modest.
Rack units (U) describe equipment height; 19 inches describes the standard mounting width. Before building, measure the actual table and every device, including mounting ears, depth, and U-height. Check clearance for connectors and cables as well as the equipment body: a device can fit between the rails and still extend too far behind the table.
How should you reinforce the table?
LACK legs are hollow through much of their length, which makes fastening rack hardware directly to a leg with a single screw an unreliable approach. Builders instead use metal rails or strips, internal wood, reinforcement pieces, or purpose-made inserts to create a more dependable mounting interface. For example, the FMRadiobroadcast guide describes transferring a hole pattern and drilling 10-32 holes in an aluminum strip. Use a pattern that matches your hardware and confirm thread compatibility before drilling.

If preserving the table matters, a drilling-free option is the LACK Rack Pro design, which is intended to use inserts. Regardless of method, the reinforcement and fasteners—not the apparent fit of the table—determine how the hardware is supported. Inspect the furniture’s condition and plan how loads will transfer into the legs and tabletop.
How do you mount equipment that lacks rack ears?
Use a shelf designed for 19-inch rack equipment rather than improvising a narrow support. A vented 1U or 2U shelf can hold switches and other non-rackmount devices while allowing airflow. The Baker Street build uses 1U shelves and describes them as supporting full-width 19-inch network and rack hardware. Match shelf depth and rated capacity to the device; a shelf that fits the width may not safely support a heavy or deep unit.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
What changes when you build multiple tiers?
Stacked LACK tables need more than a taller appearance: the joints must be braced, and the lower table must carry the combined load. The Baker Street project shows steel braces between tables and describes shortening legs to create additional tiers. Shortened legs still contain hollow sections, so their mounting and reinforcement need special attention. If adding casters, reinforce the lower structure before installation and choose casters appropriate to the assembled load.
The Eth0Wiki LackRack manual describes configurations for up to 8U of 19-inch hardware. That is a project configuration, not a universal safety certification or a promise that every LACK table can support 8U.

How much equipment can a LACK rack hold?
There is no universal load figure established for LACK tables used as racks. An IKEA Hackers project from 2012 reported about 25 kg of rack gear and said some equipment exceeded 400 mm in depth, factors that informed its choice of the LACK approach: IKEA Hackers’ project description. That example is not a manufacturer load rating and should not be treated as one. Actual capacity depends on the exact table, its condition, reinforcement, fasteners, load distribution, and whether it is braced or mobile.
For a conventional network or server cabinet, manufacturers publish rack and load specifications; a LACK build’s capacity depends on its design and execution. Compare the options against the needs of your installation:

| Consideration | LACK-based build | Conventional rack cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase cost | Can be inexpensive; cost depends on the table and added reinforcement or shelves. | Depends on the cabinet selected. |
| Depth clearance | Must be checked against the actual table, device, and cable clearance. | Published dimensions are available for the specific cabinet. |
| Supported mass | No universal certified rack load rating is established; depends on reinforcement and build. | Manufacturer specifications are available for the specific cabinet. |
| Ventilation | Must be planned for the equipment and enclosure arrangement. | Depends on the cabinet design and its ventilation features. |
| Anchoring and tip resistance | Must be designed and checked for the particular build. | Depends on the model and installation; check its instructions and specifications. |
| Mobility | Possible with casters, but the lower structure needs reinforcement and stability checks. | Depends on the cabinet and its caster or leveling options. |
| Noise containment | A table does not provide cabinet-style noise containment. | Depends on the cabinet’s construction and doors. |
| Changing rack units | Access depends on the rail, shelf, and reinforcement design. | Designed around rack mounting; ease of access varies by cabinet. |
What should you check before loading the rack?
- Dimensions: Measure the table, rails, mounting ears, equipment depth, and cable clearance before drilling.
- Fastening: Ensure rails or strips are secured into appropriate reinforcement rather than relying on a screw in thin particleboard.
- Load and stability: Distribute equipment deliberately, brace tiers, and assess tipping risk, especially with heavy equipment or casters.
- Ventilation: Leave space for airflow and use vented shelves where suitable. The cited projects do not establish a universal thermal limit.
- Cables: Route and support cables so their strain does not pull on equipment or destabilize the structure.
- Hardware compatibility: Confirm the hole pattern, thread standard, shelf depth, and fastener fit for the specific parts you plan to use.
