Check the mechanism in the product description and images, rather than relying on labels such as “manual,” “portable,” or “electricity-free.” A hand crank and a foot pedal are different drive systems, with different ergonomics and effort; a listing that does not clearly show or describe its mechanism is not enough to confirm it is pedal-powered.

Thanko C-MWM21W: hand-cranked, not pedal-powered
Thanko’s C-MWM21W is a drum-style hand-cranked washer. The official product page describes washing, rinsing, and spin-drying without electricity, and lists a maximum capacity of 4 kg, dimensions of 420 × 560 × 380 mm, and a weight of 4.2 kg. The page marks it sold out, so those published specifications and its availability should be checked again before relying on them. What the historical pedal-powered example shows
Tearfund Learn’s 2011 article, drawing on information supplied with permission by India’s National Innovation Foundation, describes a pedal-powered washer designed by Remya Jose. It is useful context for how a pedal mechanism can be applied to laundry, but it is not evidence of a current retail model or a like-for-like performance comparison.

The reported design used an aluminium box, a horizontal steel-mesh cylinder, a spindle and bearings, and a pedal drive. The article says clothes were soaked for at least 10 minutes, pedalled for three to four minutes, and then rinsed; additional pedalling reportedly left them about 80% dry. It also reports a build cost of around 2,000 rupees (US $45) at the time. Because a verified foot-pedal retail option is not established here, evaluate any current listing on its own details. Confirm each point in the manufacturer’s documentation or with the seller; do not assume a generic “manual washer” label answers it.

- Drive mechanism: Is it explicitly foot-pedal-powered, hand-cranked, or something else? Look for a clear description or product image of the drive.
- Capacity: What load size does the maker specify, and how is that capacity defined? Avoid comparing figures unless their units and basis match.
- Functions: Does the machine wash only, or does it also rinse and spin-dry? “Spin-dry” does not necessarily mean clothes come out ready to wear.
- Effort and usability: How is the pedal or crank operated, and can you use it comfortably for a full load? Seek concrete operating instructions rather than assuming the mechanism is easy.
- Water requirements: How much water does a load need, and does the machine require separate filling, draining, or rinsing? Treat water-saving claims as claims unless their comparison and evidence are clear.
- Portability and setup: Check dimensions, weight, drainage arrangements, and whether the unit needs a stable surface or other installation.
- Availability and returns: Confirm that the exact model is in stock, that the seller ships to your location, and that the return policy covers a product that does not match its listing.
How to choose if you need a washer now
If you specifically need foot operation, wait for a listing that clearly identifies a pedal-driven mechanism and publishes enough detail to assess it. If hand operation is acceptable, search for portable manual washing machines, but verify the exact model and current stock before treating it as an alternative. Thanko’s documented C-MWM21W is one example of a hand-cranked design, but its official page currently marks it sold out; it should not be presented as a foot-pedal recommendation.
