Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSoil solarization is a nonchemical heat treatment: prepare and deeply moisten a bed, seal it beneath clear polyethylene during the sunniest part of the year, and leave it covered long enough for heat to build. The method can reduce many soilborne diseases, weeds, and some pests, but it is not sterilization and does not work equally well against every organism.
What you need
- Clear polyethylene sheeting large enough to cover the entire bed, plus extra material for burying the edges.
- A shovel or trenching tool, rake, and means to irrigate deeply.
- A soil thermometer or temperature probe to check conditions.
Clear film generally heats soil more effectively than black film. UC IPM describes 1 mil clear plastic as a strong heating choice; 1.5–2 mil sheeting is more tear-resistant for windy sites, although thicker material can be less convenient to handle.
How to solarize soil: 13 steps
-
Choose the target area
Treat the whole bed or plot you want to protect. Untreated edges, furrows, or nearby soil can remain sources of weeds and pests.
-
Pick the hottest, sunniest period
Plan for several weeks of strong, direct sunlight. Shade, persistent clouds, cool weather, wind, and north-facing exposure can lower soil temperatures and extend the treatment.

-
Remove weeds and plant debris
Clear the surface so the plastic can lie close to the soil. Remove living weeds and debris that could hold the sheet up or create air gaps.
-
Prepare the bed before covering
Cultivate or loosen the soil as appropriate, shape the bed, and add planned amendments before the plastic goes down. Solarization is the last major soil-preparation step.
-
Break clods and smooth the surface
Rake the bed level and eliminate large clods. A smooth surface improves contact between plastic and soil and reduces insulating air pockets.

Moisten the soil deeply
Wet the soil to at least 12 inches deep. Moist soil conducts heat better than dry soil, so shallow surface watering is not an adequate substitute.

Lay the plastic promptly after irrigation
Cover soon after watering to limit evaporation. On small beds, a hose or soaker hose can go beneath the sheet; drip irrigation under the cover is another option.
-
Use clear polyethylene
Sunlight passes through clear film and warms the soil beneath it. Choose thinner film where maximum heating and calm conditions make tearing unlikely; choose 1.5–2 mil material where wind makes punctures a concern.

-
Cut a sheet with enough overlap
Allow extra plastic on every side. The perimeter must reach a trench so it can be buried and sealed rather than merely weighted at a few points.
-
Stretch the cover tightly
Pull the sheet close to the soil and smooth out wrinkles and bubbles. Loose sections and trapped air reduce heat transfer.

Bury and seal every edge
For a flat bed, dig a 4–6 inch trench around the perimeter. Place the plastic edge in the trench, cover it with soil, and pack the soil firmly. Repair punctures and reseal any edge that lifts.

Maintain the cover and verify heat
Four to six weeks is the usual UC IPM treatment period. Difficult conditions or pests may require as long as eight weeks; Florida guidance commonly recommends six to eight weeks. During treatment, aim for daily maximum temperatures of 110–125°F in the top 6 inches. A soil thermometer or probe can show whether the bed is reaching that range. UC IPM notes that top layers can reach up to about 140°F in some locations, not as a universal result.
-
Remove the plastic carefully and protect the treated layer
When the treatment period is complete, lift the sheet without dragging untreated soil across the bed. Avoid deep cultivation afterward because it can bring viable weed seeds or pathogens upward. If cultivation is necessary, keep it shallow—less than 2 inches. Plant once the bed is ready for the intended crop.
Choosing plastic and treatment length
| Decision | Better choice | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Film color | Clear polyethylene | Usually provides the strongest soil heating. Black film may be useful in cooler or coastal conditions where weeds could grow beneath clear film without reaching lethal temperatures. |
| Film thickness | About 1 mil in calm conditions; 1.5–2 mil in windy areas | Thin film can heat strongly but tears more easily. Thicker film improves durability but does not remove the need for tight contact and sealed edges. |
| Covered period | Four to six weeks in favorable heat and sun | Use up to eight weeks when conditions are cool, cloudy, windy, or the target pest is difficult. Regional recommendations differ; Florida guidance specifies six to eight weeks. |
What solarization controls—and what it does not
Effectiveness depends on temperature intensity, the depth reached, treatment duration, soil moisture, and the sensitivity of the particular pest. Solarization can reduce many weed seeds and soilborne fungal diseases and can suppress some other pests. It is not a guarantee of elimination, and nematodes may be less consistently controlled than weeds and fungal diseases. High heat can also affect beneficial soil organisms.

In Florida guidance, successful treatment may reduce pest populations for roughly three to four months. That is a temporary reduction, not permanent protection, and results vary by site and organism.
Aftercare and common failure points
- Dry soil: Reirrigate before covering if water did not penetrate deeply enough.
- Gaps or loose plastic: Smooth the sheet, bury lifted edges, and repair tears so heat cannot escape.
- Shaded or windy placement: Expect slower heating and consider extending the treatment period.
- Disturbing the bed deeply afterward: Keep post-treatment cultivation shallow to avoid bringing untreated soil to the surface.
- Treating only part of a problem area: Weeds or pests can move back from untreated margins, furrows, or adjacent beds.
When to seek regional advice
Climate, soil type, sun exposure, and the target organism determine whether the bed will reach effective temperatures. California UC IPM guidance and Florida UF/IFAS guidance use different timing examples, so consult your local extension service when the site is unusually cool, cloudy, windy, shaded, or affected by a known nematode or other difficult pest.
