There is no single official list of exactly 21 candle types. “Type” can describe a candle’s construction, wax, wick, scent, color, size or intended use, so the categories overlap. The most useful way to choose is to identify the format first, then check the holder, formulation, fragrance, size, wick and care instructions.
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff materials group candles broadly as container, votive and freestanding candles. Tea lights and devotional candles are examples of container candles; tapers, pillars and novelty shapes are freestanding examples. Votives are designed to melt and take the shape of their intended larger holder. Read the CPSC staff briefing.
The 21 candle types
The list below is a practical mix of formats, wax descriptions and product variations. These are not mutually exclusive technical classes: a candle can be, for example, a scented soy jar candle or an unscented beeswax taper.
Common candle formats
1. Jar or container candles
Wax is poured into a vessel that remains part of the candle. The container catches melted wax and generally removes the need for a separate holder. Use only a vessel designed and labeled for candle burning; ordinary drinking glasses are not substitutes.

2. Tea lights
Tea lights are small container candles, commonly supplied in metal or other heat-resistant cups. Their short size suits accent lighting, table settings and holders made specifically for tea lights. Check that the cup sits securely and that surrounding décor cannot contact the flame.
3. Votive candles
A votive is intended to melt and conform to a larger votive holder. It should be burned in the holder recommended for its dimensions, not on a bare surface. The holder contains the liquid wax as the candle loses its original shape.
4. Pillar candles
Pillars are freestanding candles with enough body to stand without a container. Place one on a stable, nonflammable base and follow the maker’s instructions about forming or maintaining a melt pool. Pillars may be scented, colored, single-wick or multi-wick.
5. Taper candles
Tapers are narrow, usually tall freestanding candles designed for a candlestick or taper holder. Measure the candle and holder together: a loose taper can tip, while forcing an oversized candle can damage the holder or candle.

6. Devotional candles
Devotional candles are commonly container candles associated with prayer, remembrance or religious observance. Their label and vessel still determine how they should be burned; devotional use does not remove ordinary flame and supervision requirements.

7. Novelty or shaped candles
Novelty candles are molded into figures, food-like forms, symbols or other decorative shapes. Their irregular surfaces can produce different melt patterns, so use the supplied instructions and a heat-resistant tray. Treat decorative details as part of the burn hazard unless the maker says otherwise.
Wax and fuel descriptions
Wax is a formulation choice, not a universal safety ranking. The National Candle Association lists paraffin, soy, coconut, palm, beeswax, gel and synthetic waxes, and says waxes are selected for suitability in a particular formulation rather than simply for being “clean” or “natural.” See the NCA’s wax explanation.
8. Paraffin-wax candles
Paraffin is widely used and generally holds fragrance well. Actual performance depends on the blend, wick, dye, fragrance load and container or mold, so the word “paraffin” alone does not predict burn quality.

Soy is a plant-based wax used in containers and some blended products. Soft soy can be difficult to use for an even-burning freestanding pillar unless it is blended or otherwise formulated for that purpose. 10. Beeswax candles
Beeswax can contribute a subtle honey note and is available in formats such as tapers, pillars and molded candles. Color and aroma vary by the wax and formulation; do not assume every beeswax candle has the same appearance or scent.

11. Palm-wax candles
Palm wax is used in some container and molded candles and can create distinctive crystalline or textured finishes. Burning behavior depends on the complete formula and wick rather than the wax name alone.
12. Coconut-wax candles
Coconut wax is a relatively low-melting wax often used in blends and scented container candles. Lower-melting coconut, soy and palm waxes tend to burn faster in general, but the product’s own burn estimate is the relevant figure.

Gel candles are often transparent or translucent and can display embedded decorative elements. Because gel formulations and vessels vary, follow the maker’s warning label and never add objects that were not designed for candle use.
14. Blended-wax candles
Blends combine waxes to obtain a workable melting point, appearance, fragrance performance or strength. A blend may be better suited to a pillar, container or specialty shape than a single wax, but the label should identify the intended use and care limits.
Other candle variations
15. Scented candles
Scented candles contain fragrance added to the wax. Fragrance oils may slightly increase soot, making a trimmed wick, a draft-free location and correct burn limits important. Choose a fragrance you tolerate and ventilate normally; no wax or scent guarantees a soot-free indoor burn.

16. Unscented candles
Unscented candles are useful when you want light without added fragrance, including meals, ceremonies or scent-sensitive rooms. “Unscented” describes fragrance, not wax, shape or safety performance.
17. Single-wick candles
A single wick is common in tea lights, votives, tapers and smaller containers. It may produce a narrower flame and melt pool than a multi-wick design, but the correct wick size is specific to the candle’s diameter and formulation.
18. Multi-wick candles
Two or more wicks are used to heat a wider surface, especially in broad containers. Keep all wicks trimmed as directed and respect the product’s maximum burn time; never treat a larger flame area as permission to leave the candle unattended.
19. Colored candles
Color can be added throughout the wax or used as a surface finish. It is primarily a design choice, although dyes and pigments can affect how a particular formula burns. Select by the maker’s stated use rather than color alone.
20. Floating candles
Floating candles are shaped to remain upright in water. Use a wide, stable, heat-resistant bowl with enough clearance from curtains, foliage and other combustibles. Water does not make the flame risk-free, and the candle must remain visible while lit.

21. Outdoor or wind-resistant candles
Some candles are designed for patios, lanterns or other outdoor settings, often with a protective container or formulation. They still need a stable, nonflammable location and supervision. Wind can destabilize a flame, spread hot wax or ignite nearby material, so follow the product’s outdoor instructions rather than improvising.

Start with purpose and placement
- For a table setting, consider a taper in a secure holder, a tea light in a purpose-made cup or a contained jar.
- For fragrance, compare scented container candles by the maker’s stated room and burn guidance.
- For devotional or remembrance use, choose the labeled devotional or container format and provide a stable, supervised location.
- For décor, check whether a novelty, colored or floating candle is intended to be burned or is decorative only.
Confirm the format and holder
Container candles need a vessel designed for heat. Votives need their intended larger holder. Tapers need a correctly fitting candlestick. Pillars and shaped candles need a level, heat-resistant base. If the product does not specify a safe holder or surface, choose a different product or ask the manufacturer.
Compare wax by formulation, not marketing shorthand
Paraffin may hold fragrance well; coconut, soy and palm formulations often have lower melting points and can burn faster; beeswax may add a honey note; gel is often transparent. These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every formula. The NCA’s position is that waxes are chosen for formulation suitability, not a simple cleanliness hierarchy. NCA wax guidance.
Use the product’s size and burn estimate
Larger candles generally burn longer, but wax type, fragrance load, wick configuration and vessel design also affect duration. Treat the estimate printed on the actual product as manufacturer-specific, and do not infer an exact burn time from weight or diameter alone. NCA label guidance.
Read the label before buying
- Look for a safety label and clear maximum burn-time instructions.
- Check the recommended holder, surface and placement.
- Inspect the wick configuration and whether the maker specifies trimming.
- For U.S. candles, “lead-free wick” is not a special differentiator: lead wicks have been banned there since 2003.
Choose scent, appearance and budget last
Once the format, holder and instructions fit the use, narrow the choice by scent, color, shape, size and price. No measured ranking establishes that one of these preferences is most important for all buyers.
Safe use for every candle type
- Read the warning label and follow product-specific instructions.
- Before lighting, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch unless the maker specifies another length.
- Remove wick trimmings, matches and other debris from the wax surface.
- Set the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts and anything that can burn.
- Keep the flame within sight and never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Do not burn a candle longer than four hours at a time unless the product’s instructions set a shorter limit; product-specific guidance takes precedence.
- Extinguish the flame if the vessel cracks, the flame becomes unstable or the candle reaches the maker’s stated end-of-life mark.

The Bottom Line
Choose the format and holder first, then evaluate wax formulation, scent, size, wick setup and label instructions. The safest choice is the candle whose design matches its intended use and whose care directions you can follow consistently.
