How to Run Fiber Optic Cable Through Your House

A safe home fiber run starts with the ISP’s ONT and connector requirements, then a planned pathway, correctly rated cable, gentle pulling, fire-stopped penetrations, and proper testing.

To run fiber through your house, first confirm the ONT location, connector, fiber type, and who is responsible for the indoor cable with your internet provider. Then plan and prepare a supported route, choose cable rated for the space, pull it without twisting or crushing it, respect the manufacturer’s bend and tension limits, fire-stop penetrations, and finish with compatible termination and testing. If you only need the router in another room, extending Ethernet from an ONT near the service entry may be simpler than moving the ONT.

Decide whether to move the ONT or extend Ethernet

The ONT (optical network terminal) converts the provider’s fiber connection into a network connection, commonly Ethernet. Its location and connector are provider-specific, so ask your ISP before you plan the route or buy a pre-terminated cable. Confirm whether the provider supplies or installs the indoor fiber and whether moving the ONT affects service or support. Provider guidance can be quite specific: Openreach, for example, publishes separate information about ONT location, power, internal fibre, data points, and router preparation.

If your goal is simply to place Wi-Fi equipment in a better location, ask whether the ONT can stay near the entry point while Ethernet runs to the router or access point. That avoids extending the provider’s optical link, but it does not relocate the ONT. Moving the ONT requires a compatible fiber path and agreement with the provider about the equipment and support.

Plan the route before buying cable

Map the full path from the provider’s entry point or existing ONT to the intended endpoint. Measure the route and allow extra length for service loops and termination. Identify attic, crawlspace, basement, riser, and wall or floor crossings before work begins. Prefer gentle turns, accessible pull points, and a route that can be inspected or serviced later. The Fiber Optic Association (FOA) advises assessing obstacles before installation and, where practical, completing the run in one pull.

KabelDirekt – Optical Audio TOSLINK Cable – 6ft – Soundbar
  • Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
  • Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
  • High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
  • 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
  • No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
  • Check whether the proposed path is suitable for the cable’s indoor jacket rating and any applicable building or fire rules.
  • Plan supports and protection before pulling: raceway, tray, hangers, empty conduit, or innerduct may protect the run and improve serviceability.
  • Do not put fiber into a conduit or duct that already contains another cable. Do not leave it loose on a suspended ceiling.
  • Plan fire-stopping for every wall or floor penetration. Requirements and approved systems depend on local code and the construction assembly.

Choose cable and pathway to match the installation

Before ordering indoor fiber optic cable, verify its fiber type and connector against the ONT or other equipment, as well as its length, jacket rating, bend-radius limits, and maximum pulling tension. A pre-terminated cable is only useful if its connector fits the provider’s equipment and can pass through the planned route without damage. Do not assume the ISP uses a particular connector or fiber type.

ITU-T Recommendation L.103, “Optical fibre cables for indoor applications,” describes characteristics, construction, and test methods for indoor optical-fibre cables; the ITU lists the recommendation as in force, approved August 29, 2024. Choose cable rated for the actual space and installation conditions rather than relying on a generic description such as “indoor fiber.”

Amazon Basics Toslink Digital Optical Audio Fiber Optic Cable, Multi-Channel, for Sound Bar, Audio System, Home Theatre, Game Console, Blu-Ray Player, Gold-Plated Connectors, 6 Foot, Black
  • Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
  • IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
  • CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
  • DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
  • CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.

Use a protected pathway where the cable could be snagged, crushed, or difficult to replace. Install empty conduit or innerduct before the pull if you want a protected, serviceable route. Supports should have broad contact surfaces and no sharp edges. Hook-and-loop ties are suitable for bundling; if using conventional ties, tighten only by hand enough to secure the cable without compressing its jacket.

Pull the cable without damaging it

  1. Prepare the route. Install the pathway and supports first, clear obstructions, and check that pull points and bends will not exceed the cable’s limits.
  2. Attach the pull correctly. Use the cable’s approved strength members or a suitable grip. Do not pull on the fiber itself or attach a rope to an unapproved point on the jacket.
  3. Pull steadily. Stay below the cable’s maximum pulling tension and avoid twisting. If staging a long pull, figure-eight loops help manage cable without introducing twists.
  4. Stop if resistance rises. Do not force a tight pull. Find and correct the obstruction, sharp turn, or snag before continuing.
  5. Secure the installed run gently. Keep the cable supported and free of kinks, crushing, and tight corners. Damage can cause breakage or excess optical loss even when the outer jacket appears intact.

Keep bends within the cable’s limits

The cable manufacturer’s specification controls. As a general rule, the FOA gives a minimum bend radius of 20 times the cable diameter while it is under pulling tension and 10 times the diameter after installation; some cable designs specify different limits. Radius is measured from the center of the bend, not across the loop.

Condition General FOA guidance Example for 3 mm cable
While pulling under tension At least 20× cable diameter At least 60 mm radius
After installation At least 10× cable diameter At least 30 mm radius

These are general guidelines, not a substitute for the cable specification. A pulley’s diameter is twice its radius, so do not confuse a stated bend radius with a loop or pulley diameter.

Terminate, label, and test the link

End the run in a compatible wall box, outlet, rack, or patch panel and protect the fiber at the termination. The FOA notes that 900-micron tight-buffered distribution fibers need closed termination panels for protection, while terminated simplex or zipcord cables may use open panels. Label both ends so the route can be identified during later work.

Test the completed optical link with suitable equipment rather than assuming that a cable which looks intact is working correctly. Splicing, polishing connectors, optical-loss testing, and work through concealed pathways require appropriate tools and skill; use a qualified fiber installer if those tasks are needed or if the route involves difficult penetrations.

When a professional installation makes sense

Consider a qualified fiber installer or low-voltage professional when the route requires splicing or polishing, passes through concealed or fire-rated construction, is difficult to pull safely, or needs optical-loss testing you cannot perform. Fire-stopping is not simply filling a hole with ordinary sealant: use a system approved for the applicable penetration and construction, following local code. Confirm provider responsibilities before changing the ONT or its fiber feed.
