For a clear finish on exterior windows, gently rinse off loose dirt, wash with a soft sponge or scrubber and a window-safe solution, then squeegee from the top down. Work in cool, overcast conditions when practical, and clean only panes you can reach safely from the ground or through an intended inward-tilting sash.
What you need before you start
- A hose or other gentle water supply for rinsing, plus a bucket if your chosen cleaner requires one.
- A soft sponge or window scrubber and a squeegee. A window squeegee and scrubber kit combines the two basic tools; household items may be enough for a few accessible panes.
- A clean lint-free cloth for the edges and frame.
- A cleaning solution permitted by the care instructions for your specific window.
For some elevated panes, a compatible telescoping window-cleaning pole may extend your reach while you stay on the ground. A pole does not make every window safely accessible. If you cannot reach the glass without leaning, stretching or climbing unsafely, arrange help from a qualified window cleaner.
How do I wash outside windows without streaks?
1. Pick a suitable time
Choose a dry, overcast day when possible. Direct sun and heat can dry cleaner on the glass before you remove it. In a September 5, 2026 article, Martha Stewart attributes this advice to Yesenia Soto, research and development manager at 30 Seconds Cleaners.
2. Rinse off loose dirt
Gently rinse dust, pollen, cobwebs and other loose debris before scrubbing. This helps keep grit from being dragged across the glass. Avoid forceful methods such as pressure washing; a gentle rinse is the practical first step.

3. Wash with a suitable solution and soft tool
Apply the cleaner according to its label and your window maker’s care instructions. Use a soft sponge or scrubber rather than an abrasive pad. Pella suggests one part distilled vinegar to ten parts warm water; Andersen lists mild soapy water, vinegar or liquid window cleaner as options. These are general manufacturer suggestions, not a guarantee that every solution is suitable for every pane, coating or frame. Check the instructions for your exact window before cleaning.
4. Squeegee from the top down
Work from the top of the pane downward, removing the cleaning solution with the squeegee. Pella recommends this approach for larger, hard-to-reach windows. Wipe the blade clean after each pass to help prevent drips and residue from being left behind.

5. Dry the edges and inspect
Use a clean lint-free cloth to pick up remaining water along the glass edges and frame. If streaks remain, Pella recommends rinsing and drying the window a second time.

Use a handheld scrubber and squeegee for panes you can reach comfortably. A telescoping pole may suit some higher windows that remain accessible from the ground, but it will not solve every reach or control problem. For extensive or recurring exterior cleaning, water-fed pole systems use purified water and specialist brushes; they are an advanced option, not a requirement for an ordinary home.

Do not lean out of a window or stretch from a ladder to reach glass. If a pane cannot be cleaned safely from the ground or through a sash designed to tilt inward, hire a qualified window cleaner. Follow the window manufacturer’s instructions for opening, tilting and cleaning the unit.

Why streaks can remain
- Cleaner dried on the pane: Work in cooler, overcast conditions when practical and avoid leaving solution on the glass.
- Loose grit was scrubbed around: Rinse the pane before washing it with a sponge or scrubber.
- The squeegee blade left residue: Wipe it after each pass and make a second rinse-and-dry pass if streaks persist.
- The solution may not suit the window: Check the specific window’s care instructions and the cleaner label, particularly for specialty glass or coatings.
