Brown patches are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Drought, uneven watering, dog urine, fertilizer or pesticide injury, disease, insects, and compacted soil can all discolor grass—and the right fix depends on the cause. Check the soil, blades, roots, patch pattern, and recent lawn activity before applying a treatment. Correct the underlying problem first; reseed or resod only where grass has died or become thin.
Why is my lawn turning brown in patches?
Start with the conditions around the patch rather than reaching for a fungicide. Similar-looking damage can have different causes, and a treatment aimed at the wrong one may not help. University of Maryland Extension notes that not every lawn condition requires or responds to treatment, and grass may eventually outgrow the damage (Diagnose Home Lawn Problems).
- Check moisture and sprinkler coverage: Is the soil dry in the brown area? Does irrigation reach it?
- Inspect blades and roots: Look for leaf lesions, morning fungal growth, or turf that lifts easily with little root structure.
- Study the pattern: Note the shape and border, whether the patch is spreading, and whether nearby grass is greener or also affected.
- Recall recent conditions: Consider heat, humidity, animal activity, fertilizer or pesticide applications, and the lawn’s grass type.
These are clues, not stand-alone tests. A patch that spreads gradually can point toward disease or insects; a sudden, isolated spot may have an environmental or chemical cause.
What causes brown spots in grass?
Drought or uneven watering
Water-stressed grass may look pale, grayish, bluish-green, or brown. Footprints that remain visible can be another clue. Check soil moisture and sprinkler reach before increasing irrigation; more frequent watering is not always the answer, since prolonged leaf wetness can encourage some diseases.

Dog urine
Dog urine can deliver concentrated nitrogen-containing compounds and salts to a small area. A mild dose may stimulate growth and leave a greener spot; a stronger one can turn grass straw-brown and kill it, sometimes with a darker green perimeter. Watering a fresh spot promptly can dilute the salts. Dead grass may need reseeding or sod replacement.
Avoid relying on oral “lawn saver” supplements for a dog. Colorado State Extension warns that products including dl-methionine may pose risks to dogs (Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital: Lawn Burn).

Brown patch disease
Brown patch, also called Rhizoctonia blight, is a fungal disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Iowa State Extension describes risk during hot days and nights, high humidity, and prolonged wetness on grass blades. Symptoms can include light-brown circular patches that merge and irregular, bleached blade lesions with dark margins. Fungal growth may be visible when dew is present. Other causes can look similar, so a brown circle alone does not confirm the disease.
Susceptible grasses include perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and bentgrasses, according to Penn State Extension. Avoid late-day watering and unnecessary fungicide use; many affected lawns recover when conditions change. Disease timing and susceptible turf vary by region, so consult local extension guidance if the diagnosis is uncertain (Iowa State Extension: Brown Patch in Turfgrass; Penn State Extension: Brown Patch in Home Lawns; University of Maryland Extension: Large Patch and Brown Patch in Lawns).

Fertilizer, pesticide, salt, or other chemical injury
Over-applied or unevenly spread fertilizer, pesticide, ice-melting salt, and other chemicals can damage turf in ways that resemble drought. If fertilizer was spilled, collect what remains and irrigate to dilute excess fertilizer salts, following University of Maryland Extension guidance. Review the product and how it was applied; follow pesticide label directions and local requirements. Grass that has died may need replanting.
Insects, compaction, and thatch
Turf that lifts easily with little root structure may indicate grubs or another root-feeding insect, but confirm the pest before treating. Compacted soil or thatch can also contribute to poor turf. A screwdriver pressed into moist soil can help flag compaction if it is difficult to push in; that clue does not identify every cause.

How do I fix brown patches in my lawn fast?
The fastest low-risk approach is to identify and correct the likely cause—not to apply a general-purpose brown-spot treatment.
- Pause before spraying. Brown symptoms overlap, and not every blemish responds to treatment.
- Check moisture and coverage. Examine soil in and around the patch and confirm sprinklers reach the area. If the soil is dry, adjust irrigation to the lawn’s needs.
- Inspect the grass. Look at blades for lesions or morning fungal growth, check whether turf remains rooted, and note the patch’s shape and spread.
- Match the response to the evidence. Flush a fresh dog-urine spot with water. For suspected chemical injury, review the product and application. Where disease is plausible, reduce prolonged leaf wetness, including late-day watering. Do not use fungicide or insecticide without a reason to suspect the corresponding problem.
- Repair only after addressing the cause. If grass is dead or thin, reseed or resod with material suited to the existing turf and your region.
Will brown grass recover, or does it need replacement?
Grass that is stressed but still alive may recover once the underlying cause is corrected. If the area is bare or substantially thinned, replacement may be needed. Choose seed or sod compatible with the lawn’s existing grass and local conditions; the right species and season for repair depend on your region.

A soil-moisture meter can help check suspected drought or irrigation problems, but it cannot identify disease, urine damage, chemical injury, or insects. Treat it as a diagnostic aid, not a cure.
When should I get local help?
Ask your local cooperative extension for help when the cause remains unclear, the patch continues to spread, or you are considering pesticide treatment. Turf species, disease timing, seed suitability, and pesticide rules vary by location. The disease examples above draw on extension guidance from Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, and may not match local conditions.
