If you do not have flower food, Iowa State University Extension recommends clean water without additives. A clean vase, freshly trimmed stems, and sensible placement matter too.
Do aspirin, sugar, or a penny keep flowers fresh?
Not as reliable substitutes for commercial flower food, according to Iowa State University Extension’s cut-flower guidance, last reviewed in January 2025. It lists sugar, aspirin, tea, pennies, rusty nails, bleach, mouthwash, citric acid, and other household additions as less effective than floral preservative; some may shorten vase life. That is not proof that every recipe or dose harms every flower, but it is a good reason not to treat a viral tip as equivalent to formulated flower food.
Commercial preservative combines functions. The University of Illinois Extension explains that most solutions contain sugar for nutrition, bleach to discourage bacterial growth, and citric acid to gently acidify water. The balance matters: too much preservative can do more harm than good, so use the packet’s stated amount rather than improvising.
How to care for cut flowers at home
- Start with a clean vase. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline. Submerged foliage decays and discolors the water, making it necessary to change it more often. Iowa State Extension covers this in its care guidance and arranging advice, last reviewed in January 2025.
- Trim the stems cleanly. Use a clean, sharp knife or clippers. Iowa State suggests removing ½ to 1 inch from the stems, then placing them in the vase promptly; see its cut-flower care page, last reviewed in February 2023. A tool that cuts cleanly without crushing the stem is the useful choice.
- Add floral preservative as directed. Mix the packet with the amount of water specified on its label. Do not increase the dose to try to make it last longer.
- Check the water regularly. Replace it when it becomes cloudy or smells, or when the level is low. When replacing water, follow the preservative instructions for adding more. Illinois Extension suggests considering a water change every 2–3 days, while Iowa State emphasizes changing it when low or cloudy; treat the interval as guidance, not a guarantee for every bouquet.
- Choose a suitable spot. Keep the vase away from heat, drafts, and direct sunlight. Also avoid placing flowers near ripening fruit: ethylene released by fruit can hasten flower aging, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension’s cut-flower care guidance.
What if the flower-food packet is missing?
Use clean water without additives. That is Iowa State Extension’s stated fallback when floral preservative is unavailable. Keep the vase clean, remove submerged leaves, and replace water when it turns cloudy or smells rather than reaching for a kitchen substitute.

Should you recut stems when changing the water?
It can be useful, but it is not a universal requirement. Extension advice differs: Iowa State says recutting is unnecessary if the water change is done reasonably quickly, while other guidance recommends recutting at a water change. If stems look blocked or the arrangement is due for fresh water, a clean, sharp recut is a reasonable option—not a step every bouquet must follow.
