For a sunny garden, start with flowers matched to your soil, water supply, local frost dates and intended use—not sun exposure alone. The extension profiles available for this guide support 18 distinct annual or commonly annual-grown choices, rather than a verified list of 20 that will all thrive in full sun across climates. Treat the plants below as a starting palette and check the chosen cultivar’s requirements for your region.
How to choose annuals for a sunny garden
“Full sun” describes light exposure; it does not mean a plant tolerates heat, dry soil or infrequent watering. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension recommends choosing annuals according to their environmental and cultural needs and their role in the landscape. For a sunny cut-flower garden, Illinois Extension also advises considering soil, water access, sowing method and bloom timing.
- Match heat and water needs: Portulaca and gazania are options for hot, dry spots; petunias need ample moisture and fertility.
- Check soil and drainage: Cosmos, for example, favors well-drained, low-fertility soil. A soil test can help identify amendments that are actually needed.
- Plan for size and purpose: Tall sunflowers or cleome can add height, while trailing scaevola suits baskets or ground cover. Tall cut flowers may need stakes.
- Use local timing: Planting windows depend on cold tolerance and local frost dates. Tender annuals need warm soil and air; there is no universal planting date.
Annual flowers to consider for full-sun sites
These are distinct candidates drawn from extension guidance for sunny gardens or hot, sunny locations. Their suitability can still vary by cultivar and region; verify exposure and seasonal performance locally before planting.
Good choices for cutting gardens
- Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus): Illinois Extension explicitly identifies cosmos as a full-sun annual. Direct-sow it in well-drained, low-fertility soil; excess water or fertilizer may reduce flowering.
- Zinnia: A sunny cut-flower choice that is often straightforward to start from seed or sow directly. UGA classifies zinnias among tender summer annuals.
- Sunflower: A sunny-site cut flower that commonly grows tall. UGA notes that sunflowers do best in moist, rich, well-drained soil; plan for their height and support needs.
- Strawflower: A sunny cut-flower option whose blooms can be enjoyed fresh or dried.
- Celosia: A sunny cut-flower annual for which seed is a practical starting route.
- Gomphrena (globe amaranth): A cut-flower option described by UGA as drought- and weather-resistant.
- Annual statice (Limonium sinuatum): A cut flower that dries easily, according to UGA.
Options for heat, dry conditions or difficult spots
- Tithonia (Mexican sunflower): UGA describes it as a rugged choice for hot, sunny locations. Its tall growth can provide background height.
- Portulaca (moss rose): A strong performer in hot, dry locations; it can suit a spot where water is limited after establishment.
- Gomphrena (globe amaranth): Also worth considering for weather resistance; its cut-flower use is described above.
- Gazania: Often grown as an annual and recommended by UGA for hot, dry locations.
- Nasturtium: Bush and trailing forms offer edible flowers and leaves, and UGA notes its usefulness in poor sites. Check local heat response before placing it in the hottest part of a garden.
Versatile bedding and container flowers
- Marigold (Tagetes): A widely used bedding annual available in many colors and sizes. Deadheading may encourage continued flowering.
- Annual bedding salvia: A garden staple with multiple colors. Some types benefit from deadheading.
- Petunia: UGA describes petunias as heat-tolerant but notes their need for ample moisture and fertility. Illinois Extension says many are self-cleaning; pinching can help when plants become floppy.
- Garden verbena (Verbena × hybrida): Available in bush and spreading forms. UGA notes that flowering can pause in hot, dry conditions.
- Scaevola: UGA describes prolific flowering from spring until frost, with use in hanging baskets or as ground cover.
- Annual phlox (Phlox drummondii): A possible shoulder-season choice. UGA notes it can slump in midsummer and may flower again in fall, so it is not a dependable all-summer performer in every climate.
- Cleome (spider flower): Useful for background height or screening. UGA gives a height range of 3–5 feet and notes that it reseeds freely.
This is an 18-plant list, not a claim that all 18 have been proven equally suited to full sun in every region. The source guidance does not establish two additional distinct species as uniformly reliable full-sun annuals, so it is better to check local extension recommendations than fill out the count with unverified choices. “Annual” can also describe a tender perennial grown as an annual in colder places.

Plan sowing, planting and seasonal bloom
- Choose the site and purpose. Note how much direct sun it receives and whether the planting is for a bed, container, screen or cutting garden. Make sure water is accessible.
- Check soil and drainage. Use a soil test to guide amendments instead of adding fertilizer by default. Cosmos, for example, blooms best in well-drained soil that is not overly fertile.
- Choose seed or transplants. Seeds can cost less and offer more variety; transplants save time and indoor starting space. Many cut-flower annuals can be started from seed, and some can be sown directly outdoors.
- Follow local frost timing. Use your area’s frost dates and the plant’s cold-tolerance category to determine when to sow or transplant. Wait for appropriately warm conditions for tender annuals.
- Stagger sowing for a longer harvest. In a cutting garden, stagger bloom times and sowing dates where the species allows it. Arrange tall plants with staking and harvesting access in mind.
Water and maintain plants according to their needs
Water deeply, adjusting for rainfall, soil, container size and species. Extension figures are regional guidance, not a universal prescription: Illinois Extension gives about one inch per week as a general amount, with needs varying by rainfall, soil and annual type; UGA gives a broad Georgia recommendation of 1 to 1½ inches per week for many annuals.
