Does Baking Soda Help Fruit Trees? What to Know Before Spraying

Baking soda may suppress some foliar fungi, but field results vary and sprays can wash off or injure leaves. Identify the disease and check crop-specific labels first.

No: baking soda is not a simple fix for all fruit trees or their diseases. Sodium bicarbonate may suppress some foliar fungi in limited situations, but results are inconsistent, rain can wash it off, and repeated or concentrated applications can injure leaves. If you suspect powdery mildew, identify the disease first and use only a product labeled for that tree, disease, and location.

What baking soda can—and cannot—do

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Bicarbonates can raise the pH on a leaf surface, making conditions less favorable for some disease organisms. That does not make a baking-soda spray a general-purpose fungicide: control is limited, and it is most useful preventively or when disease levels are low, according to UF/IFAS.

The evidence depends on the setting. Washington State University’s 2009 review distinguishes laboratory and greenhouse results from field use: inhibition in a lab does not reliably predict control outdoors, and field results for sodium bicarbonate varied. Greenhouse findings in selected crops, including tomatoes, do not establish effectiveness on fruit trees in an orchard.

Do not confuse spraying living trees with treating harvested fruit. Research on sodium bicarbonate and citrus addresses postharvest mold, not disease control on a tree.

First check whether the problem is powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is one possible target, not a diagnosis for every spot, discoloration, or damaged fruit. It can affect fruit trees. WVU Extension describes its characteristic white, flour-like patches on leaves, fruit, flowers, and shoots. Other symptoms may have different causes and need a different response.

If you are unsure what you are seeing, take clear photos and ask your local extension service to help identify it before applying a treatment. A fungicide aimed at the wrong problem may not help and can expose the tree unnecessarily.

Why a baking-soda spray can backfire

  • Leaf injury: UF/IFAS warns that sodium bicarbonate can injure foliage at concentrations of 1% or above and with repeated use as sodium builds up. WSU’s review also reports variable phytotoxicity, with greater risk at higher concentrations.
  • Rain reduces residue: Bicarbonates are water-soluble, so rain can wash them off. Do not improvise a repeat-spray schedule; follow the current label for any product you use.
  • Homemade mixtures are not interchangeable with labeled products: A recipe found online does not establish that a mixture is safe or appropriate for a particular fruit tree, disease, or jurisdiction.

WVU Extension gives one teaspoon of baking soda per quart of water as an approach for powdery mildew. That is an extension suggestion for a specific disease—not a universal fruit-tree recipe or proof of reliable field control. Consult local extension guidance, and do not use a homemade mixture as a substitute for a crop-labeled product.

How to compare practical options

Approach When it may help Limits and cautions
Canopy and watering changes Reduce conditions that favor powdery mildew and help keep foliage drier. These steps lower disease pressure; they are not a guaranteed cure for an established infection.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) May offer limited preventive or low-disease-level suppression of some foliar fungi. Field results vary; higher concentrations or repeated exposure can injure foliage, and rain may remove residues. Do not assume a homemade spray is labeled for your tree.
Potassium bicarbonate product UF/IFAS describes it as more effective and less phytotoxic than sodium bicarbonate; WSU identifies it for backyard fruit-tree use. Check the current local label for the tree, disease, application directions, and restrictions. A product’s bicarbonate ingredient alone does not establish suitability.

The comparison of bicarbonates comes from UF/IFAS and WSU. Registration and permitted uses can differ by product and location, so the label—not a general claim about an ingredient—determines what you may apply.

What to do if you suspect powdery mildew

  1. Identify the symptoms. Look for the white, flour-like growth described by WVU Extension; seek local help if the diagnosis is uncertain.
  2. Reduce disease-favoring conditions. Improve canopy airflow, water in the morning or avoid overhead irrigation, remove infected material, and avoid late-season nitrogen applications. These measures are included in WVU Extension’s powdery mildew guidance.
  3. Check local, crop-specific treatment options. Ask your local extension service which products are registered for the particular fruit tree and disease in your area. Potassium bicarbonate may be an option where a suitable product is labeled.
  4. Follow the current product label exactly. Use the specified rate, timing, protective measures, and reapplication instructions. Do not increase concentration or repeat applications after rain unless the label directs you to do so.

WVU also notes that horticultural oils can injure plants in hot weather and should not be applied within two weeks of sulfur treatment. If considering an oil product, check its label and local extension guidance for the tree and conditions.
