A rose sucker is a shoot growing from the rootstock below the graft union on a grafted rose. To remove one without cutting off a good cane by mistake, find the swollen graft union, trace the shoot to where it begins, then pull it away at its origin. A low shoot is not automatically a sucker: if it starts at or above the union, it may belong to the rose you want to keep.
How to tell whether a shoot is a rose sucker
Find the graft union first
On a grafted rose, the graft or bud union is the point where the desired flowering variety joins the rootstock. It often looks like a swollen join or knob near the base. On a standard or tree rose, the union may be higher on the trunk, so check the stem rather than assuming the base of the plant is the reference point. A shoot that begins below the union is rootstock growth. (RHS; University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources)
Use leaves only as supporting clues
Sucker foliage can look different from the cultivar’s leaves, including in color or leaflet number, but appearance alone cannot confirm a sucker. Liam Beddall, head rosarian at David Austin Roses, told Ideal Home in a March 16, 2026 article not to rely on the “seven leaflets” rule: rose leaves can have varying numbers of leaflets. The reliable test is where the shoot starts, not a leaflet count. (Ideal Home)
Do not mistake a basal cane for a sucker
A vigorous shoot close to the ground may be a desirable cane if it begins at or above the graft union. If you cannot see its origin, carefully move aside a little soil to trace it. If it remains unclear, ask a knowledgeable local rose grower or extension service before removing a potentially valuable cane.

How to remove a confirmed rose sucker
- Trace the shoot to its source. Locate the union and follow the suspect shoot down; do not judge by height alone.
- Expose an underground junction if needed. Gently move soil aside until you can see where the shoot joins the root or rootstock. Disturb as little of the surrounding root area as practical.
- Pull it away at the origin. Grip the sucker near its base and remove it where it begins. The Royal Horticultural Society advises against cutting at soil level and leaving the base, because it may regrow. Its guidance favors exposing the root origin and pulling there. (RHS)
- Replace the soil carefully. Avoid further digging or hoeing around the roots than necessary.
A small hand trowel can help expose a buried origin, and gloves can protect hands from thorns. These are optional aids; careful tracing and removal at the source matter more than a particular tool. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources includes gloves and bypass shears among rose-pruning equipment. (UCANR)
Why suckers matter—and whether they can be prevented
Rootstock growth can be vigorous and may overtake the chosen flowering cultivar, changing the plant’s growth and flowering. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises removing growth that appears below the graft union close to the base, and cautions against treating cuts with herbicide because it could damage the plant’s overall health. - ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage
Root injury from digging or hoeing is a known trigger for sucker growth, so take care when working near the plant and check the base periodically. Removing confirmed suckers promptly and limiting root disturbance can reduce avoidable problems, but the cited guidance does not establish a method that guarantees a grafted rose will never produce another one. | Rose type | What a root-origin shoot means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Grafted rose | A shoot starting below the graft union belongs to the rootstock and may not match the flowering cultivar. | Confirm its origin, then remove it at the source. |
| Own-root rose | Root shoots are the same variety as the rest of the plant. | They may be kept or used for propagation. |
The RHS distinguishes rootstock suckers on grafted roses from shoots on own-root roses, which are true to the variety. (RHS)
