You can build a DIY water fountain with a watertight reservoir, a submerged pump, tubing and a surface or vessel that returns water to the reservoir. A tabletop bowl is the simplest option; a two-tier patio fountain adds sealing and support work, while a buried-reservoir fountain takes excavation but hides the basin. “Fast” here means a straightforward layout with ordinary components—not a guaranteed completion time.
Choose a fountain style that fits your space and build comfort
| Style | Footprint and reservoir | Construction demands | Water effect and sound | Pump access | Typical materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tabletop or container | Small; the bowl or container is visible and holds the water | No excavation; easiest with a container that has no drain holes | Small recirculating flow; sound depends on the outlet and water movement | Reachable in the vessel for cleaning | Watertight bowl, small submersible pump, compatible tubing, stones or water-tolerant decoration |
| Two-tier patio | Medium; a lower pot serves as the reservoir, with a raised upper vessel | Requires stable support and, if pots have holes, sealing and full cure time | Water spills from the upper vessel into the lower pot; nozzle and flow affect the result | Plan access to the lower pot and pump | Large lower pot, upper vessel or saucer, pump, extension tube, nozzle, rocks and suitable sealant if needed |
| Buried reservoir | Garden footprint; basin is below grade and can be concealed | Requires digging, a screen and a stable support for the decorative feature | Depends on the fountain element placed above the basin | Must remain accessible for cleaning and maintenance | Basin, screen that blocks larger debris, submersible pump, pipe and fountain element |
This comparison describes construction differences, not tested performance rankings. For the basic components of a water feature and the importance of matching a pump to its lift, see Bunnings’ water-feature guide. The buried-basin approach and service access are covered by This Old House’s fountain guide.
How a DIY fountain recirculates water
The pump draws water from the reservoir and pushes it through tubing to an outlet. Water then falls, spills or sprays back into the reservoir, where the pump draws it again. The system only works well if the reservoir holds water, the pump remains submerged and the return flow lands inside the basin rather than splashing water out.
- Reservoir: A hole-free bowl is the simplest tabletop choice. A pot with drainage holes needs a suitable sealant or another appropriate sealing method.
- Pump: Choose one that can lift water to the outlet height you plan. Bunnings calls this measure “head height”; there is no universal rating that suits every fountain size or effect.
- Tubing and outlet: Use tubing compatible with the pump outlet, and route it to the desired spout or nozzle without kinks.
- Return path: Arrange the top vessel, fountain element or water surface so water returns to the reservoir.
Build a simple tabletop or container fountain
A container fountain is the most direct build: the vessel doubles as the reservoir, and the pump sits inside it. The University of Hawaiʻi CTAHR’s tabletop water fountain guide supports this basic arrangement of container, pump, tubing, decoration and water coverage.

- Choose a stable, watertight vessel. A bowl without drain holes avoids the need to seal the reservoir.
- Position the pump. Set it where it will remain submerged. Route its cord without sharply bending it, and keep the pump accessible for cleaning.
- Connect the tubing. Match the tubing to the pump outlet and route it to the outlet point. Follow the pump instructions for connections.
- Add decoration carefully. Use clean stones or water-tolerant decor, but do not cover or obstruct the pump intake.
- Fill and test. Add enough water to cover the pump intake, then power the pump as its instructions specify. Adjust the outlet or flow if the design allows.
- Check the return flow. Watch for splashing beyond the container and maintain the water level so the pump stays submerged.
Build a two-tier patio fountain from pots
A tiered fountain sends water from a smaller upper vessel into a larger lower pot that acts as the reservoir. Lowe’s describes the assembly in its guides to building a two-tier water fountain and building a DIY garden water fountain.
- Check the pots and plan the support. The lower pot must hold water; the upper vessel or saucer needs stable support above it. If either vessel has a drainage hole, plan a suitable sealing method.
- Seal holes and let the material cure. Use a sealant appropriate for the vessel and follow its directions, including the full cure time before adding water. The project may take longer than the physical assembly because of this wait.
- Place the pump and extension tube. Position the pump in the lower reservoir and route the tube up through the support toward the upper outlet.
- Set the upper vessel and nozzle. Make sure the assembly is stable and that the water can spill back into the lower pot.
- Rinse decorative rocks before adding them. Lowe’s warns that debris from unrinsed bagged rocks can clog the filter.
- Fill and tune the flow. Start the pump according to its instructions, then adjust the nozzle and arrangement to reduce overspray and keep water returning to the lower pot.
Build a buried-reservoir garden fountain
A buried basin hides the reservoir while leaving the fountain element visible. This style suits a garden installation where digging is acceptable and you can still reach the pump later. This Old House’s guide describes a below-grade basin, a screen to block larger debris, stable support for the feature, and an accessible submersible pump and pipe.
