Exterior updates work best when they suit the house’s architecture and account for what is staying put: the roof, brick or stone, and surrounding landscape. These 44 ideas range from paint and other modest refreshes to siding replacement and larger construction. Use them as inspiration, not a universal design prescription; climate, existing materials, and local requirements can affect what is suitable.

Start with the architecture and the parts that are staying

Before choosing a new color or material, look at the home’s proportions, roofline, window pattern, and existing facade. Siding lines, texture, and finish can reinforce a house’s character rather than compete with it, as James Hardie’s style guide illustrates across Cape Cod, Colonial, Contemporary, Craftsman, Dutch Colonial, midcentury ranch and split-level, modern farmhouse, and Tudor examples. That guide comes from a siding manufacturer, so treat it as design inspiration rather than a neutral product comparison: James Hardie’s exterior house styles guide.

ProVia likewise presents features such as Colonial symmetry, Craftsman porches, farmhouse metal roofs, and Spanish arches as recognizable style cues—not rules every home must follow. Its overview is useful when deciding whether an idea fits a particular facade: ProVia’s guide to house styles.

Exterior color ideas

Benjamin Moore says homeowners typically use three to four colors — Benjamin Moore, undated. A practical scheme often begins with the body color, then coordinates trim and a smaller number of accents. First account for fixed colors in the roof, brick, stone, and landscape; then consider the home’s style, natural light, and neighboring houses. See Benjamin Moore’s exterior color palettes for examples.

#1 Best Overall
Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Latex Brush-On Paint, Semi-Gloss White
  • Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
  • Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
  • Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
  • Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
  • Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
  1. Use a restrained gray body color. Pair it with a contrasting door or trim for definition without introducing several competing hues.
  2. Set white against greenery. White can provide a simple backdrop for mature planting and a distinctive entry.
  3. Try a deeper body color with lighter trim. Contrast can make windows and architectural details easier to read, provided it suits the roof and surrounding materials.
  4. Consider earthy green in a wooded setting. The Home Depot offers this as an example for homes surrounded by trees; judge the shade against the actual site rather than assuming it will suit every landscape.
  5. Use blue-gray with contrasting trim. This is another Home Depot color suggestion; check it against fixed masonry and roof colors before settling on a shade.
  6. Choose a vivid front door as a controlled accent. A bright door can draw the eye without requiring a whole-house repaint. The Home Depot’s examples are inspiration, not objective rules: The Home Depot’s exterior house color ideas.
  7. Echo an existing color in the details. Pulling a tone from brick, stone, or the roof into trim or the door can make a palette feel connected.
  8. Keep shutters in proportion to the windows. Where shutters suit the architecture, choose a color that supports the body and trim rather than turning them into a competing focal point.

Test colors in outdoor light

Sun, shade, and house orientation can change how a paint color appears. Benjamin Moore recommends putting an 8-ounce brush-on sample on a white foam board and observing it outside at different times of day. Its brush-on samples are formulated for interior use, so do not brush them directly onto exterior siding. Compare color and contrast from the street as well as up close: a distinction that looks strong at arm’s length may disappear at a normal viewing distance. Benjamin Moore’s color-sample guidance.

Siding and facade ideas

Siding changes the facade’s lines, texture, and apparent scale. It may be a relatively contained finish update or a substantial replacement project depending on the home and material condition; the sources do not establish a universal cost, durability, or performance ranking. James Hardie’s style examples and This Old House’s discussion of lap siding offer starting points for visual decisions, not project-specific installation guidance.

Rust-Oleum 369384 Advanced Dry Door & Trim Paint, Quart, Satin White
  • Ready to use, pre-mixed door and trim paint offers a fresh new look on interior or exterior metal, wood and fiberglass
  • Water-based paint formula emits less odor and withstands fading for a long lasting finish
  • Dries to the touch in 45 minutes, up to 3X faster than traditional oil-based paints
  • Durable, chip resistant coating provides ultimate protection with modern curb appeal
  • Beautiful satin door paint is available in 6 pre-mix color options for the perfect look
  1. Emphasize horizontal lap siding. Its long, overlapping boards can visually stretch a facade. This Old House describes lap siding as long, narrow horizontal boards installed in an overlapping pattern.
  2. Use trim to frame windows and corners. A contrasting or coordinating trim color can clarify the facade’s edges and openings.
  3. Highlight transitions between materials. A change in siding or finish can distinguish a gable, entry, or addition, but should relate to the house’s structure and proportions.
  4. Let texture follow the architecture. Select a siding profile and finish that support the home’s existing lines rather than layering on detail indiscriminately.
  5. Refresh a single facade feature. Where the design and existing materials allow, updating a prominent section may change the street view without replacing every surface.
  6. Use masonry as an anchor. If brick or stone is staying, coordinate adjacent siding and trim with its undertones rather than treating it as a blank canvas.

Entry and front-door ideas

The entry can become a focal point through color, trim, lighting, a path, or planting. Let the door’s prominence and the facade’s style determine whether the accent should be bold or restrained. These are visual ideas; the sources do not provide universally applicable construction, lighting, or accessibility specifications.

  1. Paint the front door a contrasting color. This is a small decorative change that can make the entrance easier to spot.
  2. Coordinate the door with the trim. A closely related palette can give a traditional facade a quieter, more unified appearance.
  3. Frame the entry with simple trim. Use proportions and details that belong with the home rather than adding ornament for its own sake.
  4. Make the path lead the eye to the door. A clear visual route helps the entrance read as the destination; any path work should suit the site and its requirements.
  5. Use planting to mark the approach. Repeated plants along a walk can create rhythm and guide attention without changing the house itself.
  6. Keep the garage door in the palette. Because it can occupy a large portion of the facade, its color should coordinate with the body and trim instead of competing with the entry.

Porch, roofline, and architectural details

Porches and roof details have a strong effect on a home’s character, but changes to them can range from decorating an existing feature to major construction. ProVia describes covered porches and entry pillars as Craftsman cues, farmhouse porches and metal roofs as common examples, and arches and barrel-tile roofs as Spanish-style cues. These are style descriptions, not requirements.

1 Gallon White Exterior Barn & Fence Latex Paint 18-3121-70 GL
  • Flows on smoothly and dries to a tough, durable finish
  • Fade and weather resistant
  • Ideal for exterior surfaces including wood, masonry, primed metal, weathered steel and aluminum siding
  1. Refresh an existing covered porch. A coordinated finish and uncluttered presentation can give the entry more presence without changing the structure.
  2. Draw attention to Craftsman-style pillars. Where the home already has a covered porch and entry supports, use color and surrounding details to make them legible.
  3. Give a farmhouse porch a clear visual role. Connect its finish and trim to the house’s broader palette rather than treating it as a separate scheme.
  4. Highlight dormers on a Cape Cod-style home. Dormers and steep rooflines are common cues in ProVia’s description; restrained trim can help them stand out.
  5. Respect a steep gable or side-gabled roofline. Colonial and Tudor examples often use prominent roof forms, so avoid details that visually fight the roof’s proportions.
  6. Use arches where they belong to the design. An arch can reinforce a Spanish-style facade, but adding structural features is a larger project, not a paint-level update.
  7. Consider a pergola as a larger outdoor feature. AARP’s search-result description of its curb-appeal guide mentions a pergola, but its complete list and recommendations could not be verified. Treat a pergola as one possible design direction, not a confirmed item from a complete 44-idea list.

Landscaping and curb-appeal ideas

Planting can direct attention toward a facade or entry without altering the house. In a This Old House curb-appeal makeover, landscape designer Patricia Wagner used rows of purple nemesia and rose standards along a front walk and placed a Japanese maple to one side to direct attention to a Tudor cottage’s entry. Wagner described the idea this way: “We wanted to introduce the entry by directing traffic up an allée of roses,” as quoted by This Old House.

  1. Repeat planting along a walkway. Repetition creates a visual route toward the entrance.
  2. Place a specimen plant to one side of the entry. A single focal plant can guide the eye while leaving the doorway visible.
  3. Use greenery to complement a light facade. White or pale walls can provide contrast for foliage and flowering plants.
  4. Choose planting that suits the site. The cited makeover is an example, not a universal planting prescription; local climate, exposure, and site conditions matter.
