DeWalt’s “20V MAX” label means 20 volts maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; the nominal voltage is 18 volts. Milwaukee says its M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers. Neither statement means the brands’ batteries interchange. Choose by the exact tools and tasks you need, the battery system you already own, and the packs and chargers required.
Are DeWalt 20V MAX and Milwaukee M18 batteries interchangeable?
Do not assume they are. DeWalt 20V MAX and Milwaukee M18 are distinct systems, and the manufacturer information cited here does not establish a supported way to use one brand’s battery in the other brand’s tools. Milwaukee’s compatibility statement applies to M18 batteries, tools, and chargers; it does not claim compatibility with DeWalt.
For a specific tool, check its model documentation and the battery and charger specifications from that tool’s manufacturer. A battery adapter described for one purpose is not evidence of cross-brand compatibility.
What do “20V MAX” and “M18” mean?
DeWalt states that the maximum initial battery voltage, measured without a workload, is 20 volts and that nominal voltage is 18 volts. That qualification explains DeWalt’s 20V MAX name. Milwaukee identifies M18 as its 18-volt battery platform. The labels alone do not establish that one tool is more powerful or performs better than another.

DeWalt describes its 20V MAX system as having “300+ products” on its platform page. That is DeWalt’s own product count, not an independently audited figure or a directly comparable count against Milwaukee.
Which batteries fit Milwaukee M18 tools?
Milwaukee says all M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. The statement is specific to the M18 system; check the tool’s designation and manual before using a particular pack or charger.

Choosing among Milwaukee CP, XC, and HD packs
Milwaukee describes its pack categories in terms of different size, weight, power, and runtime priorities:
- CP: Milwaukee’s most compact and lightest option.
- XC: A balance of size, weight, power, and runtime.
- HD: Larger packs intended for high-power and longer-duration applications.
These are Milwaukee’s descriptions of its own pack categories, not a universal comparison with DeWalt batteries. Match pack size and weight to the task, and follow the tool maker’s recommendations.

Can a DeWalt battery run an older DeWalt 18V tool?
DeWalt’s DCA1820 adapter is intended to let specified DeWalt 20V MAX batteries work with most DeWalt 18V tools. It requires a DeWalt 20V MAX charger and is not for FLEXVOLT batteries. “Most” does not mean every 18V tool: check the adapter’s exact model compatibility details before buying or using it. The adapter is for this DeWalt legacy-tool use case; it does not adapt DeWalt batteries to Milwaukee tools.
