Use a ceiling fan to feel cooler while people are in the room; use an air conditioner when you need to lower the room’s temperature. A fan moves air but does not remove heat. An air conditioner moves heat outdoors. In hot weather, check the temperature before relying on a fan: CDC guidance says indoor fans should be used only when the temperature is below 90°F.
How a ceiling fan and an air conditioner cool differently
| What you need | Ceiling fan | Air conditioner |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Moves air across people, creating a breeze that can make them feel cooler. It does not lower the room temperature. ENERGY STAR | Removes heat from indoor air and transfers it outside, lowering the indoor temperature. ENERGY STAR |
| Best use | Comfort from air movement in an occupied room, when the temperature is within safe conditions. | Cooling the indoor space, especially when the heat is hazardous. |
| Humidity | Can make occupants feel cooler, but does not remove moisture from the room. | Can remove moisture; ENERGY STAR advises using a slower fan speed on humid days for greater moisture removal. ENERGY STAR |
When to use a ceiling fan
For comfort while people are in the room
A ceiling fan is useful when the room is not dangerously hot and occupants want more air movement. The breeze changes how people experience the heat; it is not a substitute for actually cooling the space. ENERGY STAR puts it plainly: “Ceiling fans cool you, not the room.” ENERGY STAR
Turn it off in an empty room
Because a fan cools people rather than the room, turn it off when nobody is there to benefit. ENERGY STAR recommends using ceiling fans only in occupied rooms. ENERGY STAR
Stay within the heat-safety guidance
CDC guidance dated July 20, 2026 says to use indoor fans only when the temperature is below 90°F; above 90°F, “a fan can increase body temperature.” When indoor temperatures exceed that threshold, CDC recommends air conditioning or finding a cooled location. Follow current local public-health guidance during a heat emergency. CDC, About Heat and Your Health

When to use an air conditioner
When you need the room itself to cool down
An air conditioner is the appropriate choice when the goal is to reduce indoor temperature rather than simply make a person feel a breeze. That distinction matters during extreme heat: CDC recommends air conditioning or a cooled location when indoor temperatures are above 90°F. CDC
Choose a comfortable thermostat setting
For room air conditioners, ENERGY STAR advises setting the thermostat as high as is comfortable, typically 78°F. This is general energy-use guidance, not a required setting or a medical threshold. On humid days, ENERGY STAR says a slower fan speed removes more moisture. ENERGY STAR

When to use both
When temperatures are within safe conditions, a ceiling fan can circulate air for occupants while the air conditioner cools the room. ENERGY STAR says raising the thermostat by two degrees while using a ceiling fan can lower air-conditioning costs by up to 14%. That is an attributed maximum, not a guaranteed saving for a particular home. ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR reports that its certified ceiling fans are up to 44% more efficient than conventional ceiling fans. The comparison is fan-to-fan, not a comparison between a fan and an air conditioner; ENERGY STAR lists June 15, 2018, as the effective date for the current fan specification. ENERGY STAR
