Set a ceiling fan to turn counterclockwise in summer for airflow over people. In winter, reverse it to turn clockwise at low speed so it gently circulates warm air from the ceiling toward the occupied part of the room. A fan changes how the air feels; it does not change the room’s temperature. These are general recommendations from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE); check your fan’s manual for its controls and direction markings.
Summer: counterclockwise for a cooling breeze
Run the fan counterclockwise to move air down and across people in the room. That airflow can make occupants feel cooler, but it does not lower the room’s air temperature. DOE puts it simply: “fans cool people, not rooms.” Use the fan when someone is in the space and turn it off when the room is empty.
Winter: clockwise at low speed
Reverse the fan to clockwise and set it to low speed. The gentle airflow creates an updraft that moves warm air gathered near the ceiling back down into the occupied area. DOE notes that a ceiling fan will not change the room temperature, though it can help people feel warmer.
How to change direction safely
- Check the fan’s manual. Find the direction control and the manufacturer’s instructions for using it. The control may vary by fan; DOE does not prescribe one universal location or procedure.
- Use the direction marking or manual to identify rotation. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than relying on an assumed viewing angle.
- Select the seasonal setting. Choose counterclockwise for summer airflow or clockwise at low speed for winter circulation.
- Turn the fan off when the space is unoccupied. The seasonal guidance is about comfort for people in the room, not changing the room’s temperature.
What if the fan cannot reverse?
The seasonal change requires a fan with reversible operation. Not every fan can run in both directions: in an enforcement order concerning the Atomi AT1823, DOE found that the model lacked reversible fan action. If your fan has no reverse setting, consult its manual or manufacturer; the sources do not establish a universal retrofit for fans without this capability.

Can a ceiling fan reduce energy use?
DOE’s 2011 summer guidance says that, when using air conditioning, a ceiling fan may allow a thermostat setting about 4°F higher with no reduction in comfort. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed saving for every home or fan. The cited sources do not establish a universal percentage of household energy savings from changing fan direction, or guarantee that winter operation will lower heating bills.
