The cans are both the building material and the food being collected—not empty craft supplies.
What Canstruction is—and what happens to the cans
Teams plan and build large-scale structures from canned food, often with a theme or recognizable shape. The finished work is displayed publicly; after the event, the food goes to a local food bank or other hunger-relief organization. Canstruction calls the works “CanArt” and describes its program as a way to combine design and construction with food relief. Canstruction’s overview also describes citywide competitions, youth and university events, and custom events.
The model makes the material choice consequential: a design has to be visually legible and structurally stable while using acceptable, usable food. Organizers’ sourcing approaches vary. Teams may supply food, or an event may arrange a food drive, discounted purchases from distributors, or grocery and distributor donations. Canstruction’s citywide event guide describes these options.

For organizers, the citywide guide says any organization may host, including design/build groups, food banks, charities, malls, and civic organizations. Organizers take responsibility for registration, obtaining food, creating and designing the structures, and donating food locally. The guide currently lists annual registration at $950 and says it includes awards, an official manual, branding materials, an event-calendar listing, and headquarters support; confirm current terms with Canstruction before budgeting. The university events page lists annual registration at $200, while the custom events page lists $750 per event. These are the fees displayed on those pages at the time of writing, not guaranteed future prices. University events; Custom events.
What the 2026 handbook says about building
The 2026 Canstruction handbook hosted by AIA Northern Virginia applies to the 2026 competition covered by that regional document. Its rules are useful as an example, not a universal specification: local competitions may issue different instructions. Read the 2026 handbook and follow the rules for the event you enter.

The handbook permits full, unopened canned food with labels intact. Beverage cans and some food containers are allowed under stated conditions. Boxes, bags, and packets may be used, but they cannot replace cans as the majority material. Listed supporting materials include hook-and-loop fasteners, magnets, zip ties, tape, silicone, rubber bands, string, wire, rods, PVC pipe, and thin leveling materials, subject to the handbook’s limitations.
It excludes glass, alcohol, pet food, junk food, expired or opened food, altered labels, and empty containers. Suggested foods include low-sodium beans, no-salt-added corn and carrots, chicken, tuna, and canned fruit. Check the complete handbook and local event instructions before selecting food or construction materials.

How Canstruction’s reported impact is measured
Canstruction, Inc. reports that its competitions raised over $744,551 and donated more than 1.2 million pounds of food in 2025, as shown on the organization’s current homepage. Those are the organization’s reported totals for that year, not a result that should be assumed for every event. Canstruction homepage.
Its 2024 annual report records 1,175,471 pounds of food donated and $641,386 in cash donations. The report also says more than 96 million pounds of food had been raised for hunger-relief organizations since 1992. Each figure is attributed to Canstruction, Inc.; the cumulative total is the report’s figure, not an independently audited estimate in the cited material. Canstruction 2024 annual report.

The same report says 44 citywide competitions were registered in 2024; 25 events reported statistics, involving 265 teams. It gives inconsistent counts for youth, university, and custom event registrations in separate sections, so those category counts should not be combined into a single total.

- Choose the format. Decide whether a local citywide competition, university event, youth event, or custom group build fits your participants and goals. Confirm eligibility and local arrangements with the relevant Canstruction chapter or program page.
- Confirm local rules and venue logistics. Get the event handbook, display requirements, deadlines, and any build-area limits before designing. The 2026 Northern Virginia handbook is specific to its competition and should not be substituted for another event’s rules.
- Plan the food supply with the organizer. Establish whether teams bring food or the event coordinates a drive, discounted distributor purchase, or in-kind donation. Ask a local food bank about useful products and delivery arrangements.
- Design around approved cans and materials. Check food, label, container, support-material, and dimension rules before committing to a design; make sure the food remains suitable for donation.
- Build, display, and deliver the food. Follow the event’s staffing and build schedule, then coordinate the post-display food donation with the local hunger-relief partner.
