A 2018 Hackaday report describes smoothing a PLA 3D print by moving a butane torch lightly over its surface. The idea is to soften only the outer skin: as that surface melts, surface tension may reduce the appearance of layer lines. It takes control, carries burn and fire risks, and is not a guaranteed finish for every print or PLA blend.
How the reported torch method is supposed to work
Fused-filament fabrication builds an object in successive layers, which can leave visible lines on its surface. In a May 3, 2018 article, Zoe Skyforest reported a technique credited to XerotoLabs: pass a butane torch over a PLA print using a relatively low flame and a light, moving motion. The proposed effect is to melt the surface slightly so surface tension can smooth it.
The report gives no numerical flame temperature, measured result, or universally applicable settings. It is a description of a maker technique, not an independently validated procedure. PLA formulations, print geometry, and torch behavior can differ, so the report does not establish that a particular part will smooth evenly.
Why the technique can damage a print
The useful margin is narrow: too much heat, or heat held in one place, can turn the print into a molten blob rather than gently soften its surface. A moving pass is central to the report, but it should not be mistaken for a complete safe-use protocol. The article explicitly warns about burns and workshop fire.

NIOSH’s November 2023 guide discusses possible exposures to ultrafine particles and chemicals, as well as hazards involving heat, solvents, and fire or explosion in 3D-printing work. That is general safety context covering printing and post-processing; it does not assess or endorse torch-smoothing PLA specifically. NIOSH also says that FFF extrusion nozzles typically reach 190°C to 260°C to soften plastic for printing. Those figures describe printer nozzles—not a torch flame, a target for finishing, or a safe temperature for this method. They should not be used to set or judge torch exposure.

Other ways to finish a PLA print
The Hackaday article names sanding, fillers, paints, and a solvent method as alternatives. It does not provide comparative tests, compatibility details, or evidence that one option is best. Consider what the part needs and what risks or work each route adds:
- Sanding: involves manual abrasion; the article does not specify abrasives or quantify the work required.
- Fillers or paint: add material to the surface, but the report does not identify formulations or establish compatibility with particular PLA prints.
- Solvent method: mentioned without enough detail to identify a solvent or assess its suitability. Solvents also introduce hazards that merit careful attention.
- Torch: uses an open flame and demands control of heat; its reported benefit is surface smoothing through slight melting, but no measured finish comparison is provided.
These are options to assess, not a tested ranking. Think about open-flame exposure and the skill involved, how much manual sanding you are willing to do, whether you want a coating or filler, and whether the chosen method suits the specific print and material.

What the available safety figures do—and do not—show
In a NIOSH-reported survey, 27 of 46 workers (59%) directly involved in maintaining and using 3D printers with PLA, ABS, and nylon reported respiratory symptoms. The figure describes those surveyed workers; it does not prove that 3D printing caused the symptoms and does not measure torch finishing specifically. It is a reason to take the broader work environment seriously, not a quantified estimate of risk from this particular technique.
