A handheld anemometer can show local air velocity, but a single reading beneath the blades is not the fan’s official CFM. To compare ratings, match the fan’s speed, test basis, size and type, then consider airflow efficiency in CFM per watt (CFM/W) alongside airflow.
What CFM measures—and what it does not
CFM is a volume flow rate: it describes how much air moves through a space over time under a stated operating condition. An anemometer reading in feet per minute (FPM) is air velocity at one point. It is not, by itself, the total airflow of the fan.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s standardized procedure determines airflow from average velocity readings taken at multiple sensor positions, multiplying each reading by the effective area associated with that sensor and summing the results. The procedure specifies sensor arrangements and stable readings; it is more involved than taking one measurement below the fan. See 10 CFR Part 430, Appendix U. ENERGY STAR testing guidance also describes a controlled room and hot-wire air-velocity sensing; its facility manual provides method context, while the DOE procedure is the current standardized basis: ENERGY STAR Testing Facility Guidance Manual.
How to check air movement at home
A handheld anemometer can help you compare local air speed, for example before and after changing a fan setting. Treat the result as a repeatable local comparison, not a whole-fan CFM rating. A home reading does not recreate the DOE test unless it uses the required measurement layout, conditions and calculation.

- Choose fixed measurement points. Mark or record the locations where you will measure, and use the same distance from the fan each time.
- Keep conditions consistent. Use the same fan speed and maintain comparable room conditions for each reading. Allow readings to stabilize before recording them.
- Record each local velocity. Note the location, fan setting and reading in FPM. Take readings at the same points for every comparison.
- Compare like with like. Look at the set of readings together. Do not label one point reading—or an average of arbitrary points—as the fan’s official CFM.
Do not multiply a centerline velocity reading by the blade-swept area to estimate official CFM. The DOE method uses distributed measurements and effective sensor areas, not that shortcut. For a product rating suitable for comparison, use the manufacturer’s declared airflow under the applicable test procedure and, where relevant, check the ENERGY STAR ceiling fan criteria and product resources.
How to compare published CFM ratings
CFM depends on the fan’s operating condition and the basis used to obtain the figure. Before deciding that one rating is better, check that the figures are comparable on these points.

What CFM/W tells you
CFM/W is airflow per watt: a higher value indicates more airflow for each watt under the rating’s stated basis. ENERGY STAR’s current ceiling-fan efficiency definition is a weighted metric that accounts for performance at multiple speeds and in standby mode, rather than simply dividing a single high-speed CFM figure by power. The program’s current key product criteria provide its definition and requirements.
How ENERGY STAR airflow criteria vary by fan size
ENERGY STAR’s current criteria are program thresholds, not universal comfort targets. As listed on its criteria page accessed in 2026, the minimum high-speed airflow is 1,767 CFM for standard ceiling fans up to 36 inches and 1,414 CFM for hugger fans up to 36 inches. For standard fans with blade diameters from 36 inches to under 78 inches, the listed minimum high-speed airflow is calculated as 250 × π × (D/24)² CFM, where D is blade diameter in inches. These thresholds do not guarantee that a particular room will feel a specific amount of cooling.

A steeper blade pitch is not enough to establish how much air a fan moves. ENERGY STAR identifies motor design and speed, as well as blade design, material, number and length, as factors affecting air movement.
