The project titled “Build your very own 20-ton hydraulic press from scrap” shows a mobile press assembly made with salvaged and newly shaped steel, an old pneumatic press, and trolley wheels. It is an overview, not an engineered set of plans: the description does not provide the structural details or test evidence needed to establish that the finished frame can safely withstand 20 tons. Treat that number as the project’s label, not a verified rating.

The project can still be useful as inspiration for understanding the parts and decisions involved in a shop press. It should not be treated as instructions for reproducing a particular capacity from scrap.

What does the featured scrap-built press project show?

The Interesting Engineering article credits the project video to Meanwhile in the Garage. Its materials list includes tubular steel, steel rods, steel sheet, an I-beam, an old pneumatic press, trolley wheels, nuts and bolts, welding gear, safety equipment, an angle grinder, sandpaper, and basic hand tools.

At a high level, the described work shapes a main press mount, creates a spring-loaded return assembly, builds a reinforced dolly, attaches the press frame, fabricates rods and I-beam supports for the platform, makes levers, and reconnects tubing. The description also mentions filling and bleeding the system and reassembling and lubricating moving parts. These are the article’s reported project steps, not independently verified construction guidance.

#1 Best Overall
Garvee 20Ton Hydraulic Shop Press H-Frame Floor Shop Press
  • Industrial-Grade Stability - Engineered with a reinforced H-frame structure and heavy-gauge carbon steel construction, this press maintains perfect alignment even under maximum 20-ton load. The powder-coated finish provides superior corrosion resistance for long-lasting durability.
  • Precision Hydraulic Operation - Features a heat-treated piston ram and calibrated spring system for ultra-smooth pressing action. The extended leverage handle requires minimal effort to operate - simply pump for powerful, controlled pressure.
  • Workshop Versatility - An essential tool for automotive repairs (bushings, bearings), metal fabrication (bending, punching), and industrial applications. Dramatically improves efficiency in professional shops and serious DIY workspaces.
  • Comprehensive Safety Features - Built-in pressure relief valve automatically engages at 20-ton capacity, while the textured work surface prevents slippage. Professional-grade protection engineered into every component.
  • Dependable Construction - Designed for years of reliable service with maintenance-free operation. The rugged design withstands daily workshop use while delivering consistent, precise results.

The project description uses both “pneumatic” and “hydraulic” language, but does not document the machine model, pressure, circuit, hose rating, or component compatibility. It therefore does not establish how to reproduce or safely configure the actuation system, and it does not identify a specific replacement part.

Why doesn’t the jack’s tonnage prove the press is rated for 20 tons?

A jack’s capacity describes the jack, not the complete machine. The force also loads the press frame, platform, guides, welds, pins, and other parts in the load path. A frame that bends or twists can lose alignment or fail even when the jack itself is within its rating. The available project description supplies no steel grades, member sizes, structural analysis, weld specifications, or test results with which to verify the frame.

Anvilfire’s manual-press reference illustrates why a capacity label is not enough: it recounts one press whose rating was reduced from 20 tons to 12 tons after calculations. That is a correction for that particular press, not a general conversion or a rating for the scrap-built project. The reference also discusses plate stress and springy deflection, and warns that an off-center load can twist a narrow plate frame.

Those issues matter in practice. A workpiece placed away from the centerline can load the frame unevenly; a press that deflects can also put tooling out of alignment. The actual capacity of a complete press must be supported by its design and credible verification, not inferred from a component or a title.

How does the project compare with documented press examples?

These examples help put the project in context; neither validates the scrap-built frame. The stated figures belong to the specific designs and sources shown.

Example What the source states What that establishes
Featured scrap-built project Its title names 20 tons. The project description lists materials and broad assembly steps but no structural calculations or test evidence. The title’s capacity is not an independently established frame rating.
Anvilfire press example Anvilfire reports that one press was revised from 20 tons to 12 tons after calculations. A specific example of why a stated rating can change after structural review; it does not rate the featured project.
Potter USA commercial jewelry press The manufacturer describes a 23-inch-high frame, 16.5 inches wide and 7 inches deep, made from half-inch steel plate with no welds in the press frame. It says the frame-only version needs a 20-ton bottle jack. A manufacturer-described commercial design for jewelry-studio forming, not a plan or capacity validation for an improvised floor press.

Intended work shapes press design. Anvilfire’s examples include a press designed to punch 2.5-inch and 3-inch blanks from 16-gauge mild steel, as well as a frame its author calls too light for a 20-ton press. Those details describe particular examples, not universal design limits.

What should you evaluate before choosing or building a shop press?

Start with the work, then assess whether the whole machine is designed and documented for it. Compare presses on the factors that affect how they perform, not just the tonnage printed on the jack.

  • Job and tooling: Identify the operations and tooling the press is intended to handle. Punching, bending, forming, and coining impose different practical demands.
  • Frame and load path: Look for credible information about the frame geometry, members, joints, and how force travels through the assembled press.
  • Opening and adjustment: Check the working opening and platform arrangement against the size and shape of the workpieces you need to position.
  • Alignment and loading: Consider how the design guides the moving parts and how it handles the expected position of the work. Off-center loading can twist a narrow plate frame.
  • Actuation and compatibility: Confirm the intended actuation system and whether its components are specified for that setup. The featured project description does not provide enough information to establish a compatible system.
  • Complete-machine rating and documentation: Look for a rating that applies to the assembled press, supported by credible instructions or engineering information. A jack’s rating alone is not that evidence.
  • Parts and support: Consider whether the machine has identifiable parts and usable instructions for assembly, maintenance, and safe operation.

Is the article a safe set of plans to build from?

No. It offers a project overview and materials list, but not a dimensioned plan or a structural specification. There is no evidence in the description to support assigning safe cut sizes, plate thicknesses, weld details, or a capacity to a replica. Supplying those as if they were established would turn an inspirational project into unsupported engineering advice.
