For washable clothes, treat fresh blood with cold water, then wash according to the care label. For dried blood, pretreat or soak with an enzyme-containing laundry product in warm water before washing. Check the stain before drying: heat can set what remains. For delicate or dry-clean-only fabric, follow the garment’s care instructions rather than assuming a home treatment is safe.

Before treating the stain, check the care label

Confirm that the item is washable and note its water-temperature, bleach, and drying limits. Delicate, embellished, dry-clean-only, or unusually finished fabrics may need professional care; there is no single home method established for every fabric. Follow the laundry product’s directions as well as the garment label.

How to remove fresh blood from washable fabric

  1. Soak the stained area in cold water. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) advises against hot water because it can set blood stains. See the ACI Stain Removal Guide.
  2. Wash the item according to its care label and the detergent instructions.
  3. Inspect the stain before putting the item in a dryer. If it remains, repeat treatment and washing instead of drying it.

How to remove dried blood stains

  1. Check that the fabric is washable and that warm-water treatment is permitted by its care label.
  2. Pretreat the stain or soak the item in warm water with an enzyme-containing laundry product, following that product’s directions. ACI identifies enzyme presoaks as especially effective for protein stains such as blood. An enzyme laundry presoak or enzyme-containing stain remover is an optional product category, not a guarantee of removal.
  3. Launder according to the care label, then inspect the stain before drying. If it remains, repeat the treatment and wash.

When to use bleach—and when not to

If blood remains after washing, ACI advises rewashing with bleach that is safe for the fabric. Check both the garment’s care label and the bleach product’s directions, and test for colorfastness as directed. White fabric is not automatically safe for chlorine bleach: fiber, finish, trim, and care instructions all matter. ACI’s bleach guidance explains why compatibility matters.

Why you should wait before using the dryer

Drying can set a remaining stain, so inspect the treated area before using a dryer. If blood is still visible, repeat the appropriate treatment and wash rather than drying the item. The ACI’s stain guide says not to put an item in the dryer until the stain is removed.
