Use it only in the machine’s dedicated salt reservoir, and follow the appliance manual for your water-hardness setting and refill steps. There is no evidence establishing one best brand, and not every dishwasher or water supply requires salt.
What dishwasher salt does—and which machines need it
Dishwasher salt goes in a dedicated reservoir, not the detergent dispenser. In models fitted with a salt-fed ion-exchange softener, it supports regeneration of the resin that reduces the effects of hard water. The reservoir and softener must be part of the appliance for dishwasher salt to have this role. Whirlpool explains the softener and reservoir; Bosch’s manual describes regeneration salt for the model it covers.
Salt need varies with incoming water hardness, the dishwasher model, and its settings. Some manufacturers say salt is not universally required; consult the manual for your exact model before buying or filling the reservoir. Danby’s guidance makes clear that its use is not a universal requirement.
Which salt should you choose?
Choose a product whose package specifies automatic dishwashers or dishwasher regeneration salt, with coarse granules suitable for the reservoir. Bosch says coarse granules help avoid clogging the salt tank. Whirlpool warns that additives or impurities in other salts can interfere with regeneration or harm components. Bosch’s dishwasher-salt guidance and Whirlpool’s filling instructions explain the reasons to use purpose-made salt.

No comparative evidence establishes a best brand, superior cleaning results, or better value. Compare products by the dishwasher-specific labeling, granule suitability, ease of pouring, and whether your appliance manual permits their use.
Do not substitute ordinary or other-purpose salts
Do not use table salt, sea salt, rock salt, kosher salt, or de-icing salt in place of the specified dishwasher product. Fine grains, additives, or impurities may cause clogging, interfere with regeneration, or damage the softener. Bosch’s guidance puts it plainly: “Though it might be tempting in a pinch, do not use table salt in your dishwasher.” Bosch, Whirlpool, and Smeg all advise against substitutes.

How to find your water hardness and set the dishwasher
- Get your local hardness value. Check the water supplier’s information or report. If it does not provide a usable value, use an appropriate water-hardness test strip or kit. Bosch describes test strips, while Whirlpool suggests a supplier report or a test kit: Bosch and Whirlpool.
- Find the matching table in your model’s manual. Hardness thresholds and settings are not universal. For example, a Bosch manual for the model represented by its 2017 search metadata says tap water above 7° dH (1.2 mmol/l) must be softened. Smeg’s FAQ says salt is needed above 38°fH for the models it addresses; neither figure should be applied as a general threshold. Bosch manual; Smeg FAQ.
- Set the dishwasher’s water hardness control as instructed. Use the hardness value and the setting procedure specified for your model. Whirlpool notes that menu settings and features vary by dishwasher: Water Hardness – Dishwasher.
Manufacturer advice can also describe different conditions: Beko says salt is not needed under 5 dH on its support page, while Bosch and Smeg give different model-specific thresholds. These examples are not interchangeable rules for all machines. Beko support FAQ.
How to fill and refill the salt reservoir
Follow the exact first-fill and refill instructions in your appliance manual. The steps can differ: Whirlpool says to fill the reservoir with water before adding salt for the first time in the guidance it provides. - Use the reservoir opening, not the detergent compartment.
- Use a funnel if it helps pour cleanly; Bosch mentions a salt funnel as an optional accessory, not a requirement.
- Secure the reservoir cap after filling.
- Refill when the machine’s salt indicator calls for it, following the manual’s procedure.
As one model-context example—not a schedule for every dishwasher—Whirlpool says the reservoir may need refilling about once every 6 to 8 weeks at factory-default hardness setting 3. The interval varies with use and settings. Whirlpool Product Help.
Do all-in-one tablets mean you can skip salt?
Not necessarily. Whether salt is needed depends on the incoming water hardness, whether the dishwasher has a salt-fed softener, and the appliance’s instructions and settings. Bosch says all-in-one tablets are typically enough in moderately soft or slightly hard water but directs users to the manual; that guidance does not establish that tablets replace salt in every machine or water condition. What to buy if you do not know your water hardness
A water-hardness test strip or kit is an optional way to get a value when your supplier does not provide one you can use. A salt funnel can make pouring easier, but is not required. These are task-enabling accessories, not substitutes for dishwasher salt or the appliance’s manual. Bosch discusses test strips and funnels; Whirlpool discusses supplier reports and test kits.
