For most cacti and succulents, the best pot has a usable drainage hole. Unglazed terracotta is a dependable choice when you want the pot to dry more quickly; glazed ceramic or plastic can also work if you adjust watering to the pot and growing conditions. A decorative pot without a hole can still be used as an outer cachepot around a smaller, draining pot.
What makes a good pot for cacti and succulents?
Start with drainage, then consider how quickly the container dries, whether its size and shape suit the plant, and how it will work in the space where you keep it. Iowa State University Extension says succulent containers can be made from glazed pottery, ceramic, terracotta, clay, plastic, or glass, provided they have drainage holes. Its indoor succulent guidance also describes using a smaller draining pot inside a decorative container without a hole.
- Drainage: Choose a pot with a clear, usable hole in the bottom.
- Drying speed: Porous walls can release moisture; less porous walls tend to retain it longer.
- Fit: Choose dimensions and a shape appropriate to the particular plant.
- Practicality: For indoor use, consider where runoff will go and whether you can empty it.
- Appearance: Pick a finish and shape that suit your display, without sacrificing a way for excess water to escape.
How do the common pot materials compare?

Virginia Cooperative Extension explains that pot materials affect moisture loss, and notes terracotta’s potential advantage for arid plants in its container-houseplant watering guidance. NC State Extension also discusses how porosity affects drying and describes double-potting in its container-growing guidance. No one material is best for every species, mix, and setting.
Why drainage holes matter—and why gravel is not a substitute
A drainage hole gives excess water a way to leave the pot. A layer of gravel under the growing medium does not provide the same function and should not be treated as a replacement for a hole. The University of Illinois Extension identifies the gravel-under-potting-mix approach as a drainage myth for an individual container; see its container drainage guidance.

If a pot has a hole and sits indoors, a saucer can catch runoff. Empty it so the pot is not left standing in pooled water. If the decorative pot itself has no hole, place a plant in a separate draining pot inside it; take out the inner pot to water or drain it, and do not let it sit in collected runoff.
How should you choose the pot size and growing medium?
Choose the container to suit the individual plant’s size and shape rather than relying on a universal diameter or depth. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends selecting a container appropriate to the plant in its guide to growing succulents in containers. The available guidance does not establish one pot size that suits all cacti and succulents.

Use a well-draining growing medium as well as a draining container. A cactus and succulent mix is one option. Iowa State Extension also says potting soil can be amended with perlite or sand to improve drainage. Gravel at the bottom of the pot is not a replacement for either appropriate growing medium or a drainage hole.

Choose terracotta when quicker drying through porous walls is useful for your plant and conditions, and you can monitor moisture as the mix dries. Choose plastic if you prefer it or already have a suitable pot; make sure it drains and account for the fact that less porous walls generally retain moisture longer. In either case, the pot alone cannot prevent overwatering: drying speed also depends on the plant, growing medium, and environment.
