Yes. Cordless tools with lithium-ion batteries are generally safe to use when the tool, battery and charger are in good condition and used as the manufacturer directs. They are not risk-free: damage, extreme temperatures or improper charging can trigger thermal runaway, which may cause a battery fire or explosion. Know the warning signs, use the correct charging system and treat smoke or fire as an emergency.
What makes lithium-ion tool batteries a safety risk?
A lithium-ion battery can enter thermal runawayâa chain reaction in which rising heat drives further failure. A damaged pack, excessive heat or cold, or improper charging can contribute to a failure. The resulting fire may escalate quickly and release hazardous gases; a battery fire can also reignite after it appears to be out. OSHA describes indicators of thermal runaway, while USFA provides consumer safety and emergency guidance: OSHA lithium-ion battery safety and USFA battery safety.
That hazard does not mean ordinary intact tool packs are inherently unsafe. The key is to use the exact tool-and-battery system as designed, avoid damaged packs and follow any model-specific instructions or recall notices.
How to use, inspect and charge a tool battery safely
Inspect before use or charging
Look over the battery and tool for cracks, swelling, leaks or other visible damage. Do not use or charge a pack that is unusually hot, hissing, popping, or venting gas or smoke. Those can be warning signs of damage or thermal runaway. Do not charge a suspect battery to see whether the problem goes away; take it out of service and contact the manufacturer for handling instructions. Use the manufacturer-approved charger
Charge with the charger supplied with the tool or one the manufacturer recommends for the exact model, and follow the manual. A plug or connector that fits is not proof that a charger is compatible. OSHA advises following manufacturer instructions for battery storage, use, charging and maintenance: OSHA lithium-ion battery safety.
Choose a suitable storage and charging location
Keep batteries cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, combustible materials and temperature extremes. Follow the limits in the tool manual. Do not use an electric tool in a wet location unless it is approved for that use; OSHA’s general power-tool guidance also says to store tools dry and remove damaged portable electric tools from service. Do not open packs or substitute loose cells
Do not open or rebuild a battery pack, or replace its cells with loose 18650 cells. CPSC warns that loose cells removed from packs can short against metal objects and that improper charging can cause overheating or thermal runaway. What to do with a damaged or recalled battery
Stop using a damaged battery or tool. OSHA’s power-tool guidance says to remove damaged portable electric tools from use and tag them âDo Not Use.â For a damaged or recalled battery, ask the manufacturer how to handle, return or dispose of it safely. Check the exact model for recalls
Recall instructions apply to specific products and behaviors, not every tool that uses a lithium-ion battery. On July 9, 2026, CPSC announced a recall covering about 554,780 specified Kobalt 24V and 48V yard tools and batteries sold with USB-C charging ports. For the listed products, charging through the USB-C port while the battery is inserted in the tool can cause a short circuit and fire. CPSC says to stop that charging method and contact Greenworks Tools for a free replacement battery. The notice reported 34 incidents of batteries smoking, sparking or catching fire under that condition, with no reported injuries or property damage at publication. Check the CPSC recall notice for affected models and current remedy details.
What to do if a battery smokes or catches fire
- Move away and warn others. Do not pick up or carry a hot, venting or burning battery.
- Evacuate and call 911 if there is smoke or fire. Do not try to put out a lithium-ion battery fire yourself.
- Follow emergency responders’ instructions. Hazardous gases and possible reignition make a battery fire an emergency even if flames appear to have stopped.

How to choose a replacement battery or charger
If a component needs replacing, check the tool manual and manufacturer information for the exact tool and battery model. Confirm that the manufacturer supplies or approves the charger or replacement pack, and check whether the exact product is affected by a recall. A generic charger is not a safe substitute merely because it connects to the battery.
