Hardwood Plywood Face Side: How to Choose, Mark, Cut, and Finish the Show Surface

The show face of hardwood plywood is the surface that best suits the part readers will see. Inspect both sides for grain, color, veneer splices, and imperfections under lighting like the finished room, then plan each cut so the chosen face and grain direction land where intended.

Do not rely on a grade label alone to pick the prettier side, and do not assume one blade orientation works for every saw. Test the actual saw setup on an offcut, protect the veneer during cutting, and prepare and test the surface before finishing.

What the Face Side Means

The face side, or show face, is the plywood surface selected for its appearance on a visible part. Which side is best is a project decision: compare the two faces and consider how their grain, color, splices, and imperfections will look after the planned finish.

Premium faces may look nearly identical at first glance. WOOD Magazine recommends choosing the visual effect you prefer and carrying a consistent grain pattern through related parts. A grade or stamp can provide product information, but it is not a substitute for looking at the decorative panel itself.

How to Choose and Mark the Show Face

  1. Inspect both faces before cutting. Compare grain continuity, color, veneer splices, and visible defects under suitable lighting.

  2. Decide which face belongs on each visible component. For matching parts, plan how the grain direction and visual sequence will relate across them.

  3. Mark the show face and grain direction on the back of the panel or in your cut plan, where the marks will not become finish defects.

  4. Read the panel stamp and manufacturer documentation for product and performance information. Verify the specific panel’s grading system rather than assuming every label follows the same convention.

What Grades and Labels Tell You

APA describes structural plywood face and back designations such as A-B or B-C as grades of the outer veneers, reflecting appearance characteristics and allowable repairs. Other panels may be identified by end-use categories. These labels are useful clues, but grading conventions vary by product type and market, and they do not replace inspecting a decorative hardwood face.

Keep appearance separate from structural performance. Plywood veneers are cross-laminated, with alternating grain directions that distribute strength and stiffness in both panel directions. For load-bearing use, follow the panel rating, strength axis, support spacing, and application instructions; the visible grain alone does not determine structural orientation.

Cutting Hardwood Plywood Without Chipping the Face

Chip-out is a risk when cutting veneered sheet goods. WOOD Magazine Staff put it plainly: “When making cuts in veneered sheet goods, chip-out always looms as a possibility.” Tape and a shallow scoring pass can help reduce chipping, but the cleanest face orientation depends on the saw, blade, and setup.

  1. Support the panel and offcut safely, and follow the saw maker’s operating and guard instructions.

  4. Peel tape gently to avoid lifting veneer fibers. Do not force the cut.

Preparing the Surface for Finish

Factory sanding does not necessarily mean a panel is ready for its final finish. APA defines sanded plywood as a structural panel whose face and back plies are sanded smooth during manufacture; the HPVA handbook guidance says a panel should not be considered finish-sanded until proper sanding is done immediately before finishing.

Prepare the surface lightly and carefully because face veneer is thin. The right preparation depends on the species, veneer, panel condition, and intended finish; the research does not establish one safe grit schedule or finish recipe for every panel. Test the planned preparation and finish on an offcut from the same sheet before treating the project.

Comparing Faces and Panel Choices

When both faces seem usable, compare the visible grain and color, splice layout, defects or repairs, how grain will flow across adjoining parts, and how the finish may change contrast. When comparing panel products, consider face appearance separately from structural grade, thickness or performance category, bond classification, and intended exposure.

Bond classification concerns adhesive moisture resistance. It is not a measure of decay resistance and does not replace proper detailing. Check the panel documentation for the specific product and application rather than inferring performance from the face appearance.

FAQ

Which side of hardwood plywood should be the show face?

Choose the side whose grain, color, splices, and imperfections best suit the visible part and planned finish. Inspect both sides rather than relying only on a grade label.

Does an A or B grade tell me which face looks better?

Grades and stamps provide useful product information, but conventions vary by panel type and market. For decorative hardwood plywood, compare the actual faces and verify the specific product documentation.

Should hardwood plywood be cut face up or face down?

There is no universal orientation for every saw and setup. Make a test cut with the actual panel and equipment, and use the orientation that gives the cleanest cut on the show face while following the saw maker’s instructions.

How can I reduce chip-out when cutting plywood veneer?

Support the panel, test your setup, and consider painter’s tape over the cut line and a shallow scoring pass. Peel tape gently so it does not lift veneer fibers.

Is factory-sanded plywood ready to finish?

Not necessarily. Prepare the surface immediately before finishing and test the intended preparation and finish on an offcut from the same panel.
