Fireplace accent wall ideas range from painted brick and tile to full-height stone, plaster, and built-ins. Choose a finish for its visual character and room context, then verify the exact fireplace model’s installation instructions before deciding how close combustible finishes, shelves, trim, or a mantel can go.

There is no universally safe clearance or finish assembly for every fireplace. NFPA describes NFPA 211 as covering fireplace design, installation, maintenance, inspection, and clearance from combustible materials; the applicable appliance listing and installation instructions, along with local requirements, govern a particular project.

Below are 19 design directions to help you plan the wall. They are inspiration, not tested product recommendations or rankings for price, durability, popularity, or performance.

Start With the Fireplace Type Before Choosing a Wall Design

Identify the fireplace type, make, and model before selecting finishes. Wood-burning masonry fireplaces, inserts, gas appliances, and electric fireplaces can have different installation requirements. Check the appliance instructions for clearances and permitted finish assemblies, and confirm applicable local requirements before work begins.

#1 Best Overall
PuraFlame Western Electric Fireplace Insert with Fire Crackling Sound, Remote Control, 750/1500W, Black, 33 1/16 Inches Wide, 25 9/16 Inches High
  • Overall dimensions: 35 1/16" W x 26 31/32" H x 8 25/32" D. Firebox dimensions: 32 1/8" W x 25 9/16" H x 7 51/64" D. Please contact before ordering if you are not sure about if it will suit your opening.
  • 3 flame intensity can be used with or without heat all year long; 100% energy saving LED technology. A sleek look with three-sided interior brick wall and clean glass front trim design, without the hassle of cleaning dust or ashes.
  • Life-like resin log which is 11 13/16" high sitting on the grate above ember bed, that's just what a wood burning fireplace looks like.
  • Adjustable thermostat; A supplemental heat for up to 400 sq. ft. NOT a MAIN heat source; Remote control provided for easy operation.
  • Easy to install and uninstall. With flat bottom, the insert can just sit on the floor directly; Plug in and use under a voltage of 120, CANNOT be hard wired. Customer service is always ready for help whenever you need.

Do not assume that tile, stone, metal, or a product described as heat resistant makes the entire wall assembly safe. The substrate, attachment method, projections, and nearby combustible construction matter too. A listed wall shield can reduce clearance only where the relevant listings allow it; UL Solutions says the shield’s certification and instructions govern its location and use.

Before demolition or seasonal use, look for issues that could affect the scope, such as damage to the firebox or chimney, venting concerns, or changes to fuel and electrical connections. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends professional inspection before seasonal use. Consult a qualified professional when inspection, repair, or installation requirements are unclear.

Compare Fireplace Accent Wall Finishes

Compare finish choices by appearance and by the installation requirements for the specific fireplace and wall. The amount a shelf, mantel, or trim projects from the fireplace face is also important to verify against the applicable instructions. The dossier does not establish reliable price, durability, or popularity rankings for these options.

Finish or feature Visual character Planning check
Painted or limewashed brick Retains brick texture while changing its color or contrast Check masonry condition and product suitability for the surface and location
Tile or stone Creates a patterned, textured, or more continuous surround Verify the complete assembly, substrate, attachment, and appliance instructions
Plaster-look finish Offers a quieter, more continuous surface Confirm the finish system and substrate are appropriate for the location
Wood trim, slats, or shiplap Adds warmth, rhythm, or traditional detail Treat as combustible unless documentation says otherwise; verify required clearances
Built-ins and shelves Add storage and display space around the focal point Check projection, combustible components, appliance access, and installation instructions

19 Fireplace Accent Wall Ideas That Work in Real Remodels

1. Full-Height Stone Veneer Wall

Running a stone-look finish from the hearth area toward the ceiling creates a strong vertical focal point, especially in a room with a tall wall. Consider how the texture and scale relate to the room rather than assuming a particular stone product is suitable for every fireplace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a system, confirm its installation requirements and the fireplace instructions. Stone appearance alone does not establish that a product or complete assembly is compatible with a particular appliance.

2. Large-Format Porcelain Slab-Look Tile

Large-format tile can create a more continuous surface with fewer visible joints than smaller tile. Its restrained pattern can suit contemporary rooms, while color and veining help set the mood.

Plan the layout, cuts, substrate, and attachment with the tile installer. Verify the full assembly and its location against the fireplace instructions before ordering or installing materials.

3. Limewash Brick Fireplace Wall

Limewash changes the color of brick while leaving much of its texture visible. It can help an existing brick fireplace feel lighter without concealing the masonry character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the brick’s condition and the coating’s requirements first. Soot, previous coatings, or moisture concerns can affect preparation and the finished appearance.

4. Painted Brick With a Coordinated Surround

Painted brick can make an existing fireplace feel more intentional. A restrained neutral or a deeper color can work as a backdrop for furniture and art.

Painting is a finish choice, not a repair for damaged masonry. Confirm surface preparation and product suitability, and do not treat paint as a substitute for required clearances or an approved fireplace assembly.

5. Vertical Wood Slats as an Accent

Vertical slats add rhythm and draw the eye upward. They can frame a fireplace wall when used as an accent away from the appliance, subject to the specific installation requirements.

  • Safety and Comfort: ETL Certificate Approved. It also has auto-heat kill safety to avoid the superheating. The heat is good for maintaining the natural humidity within the air without making the room too dry.
  • Let R.W.FLAME electric fireplace warm your home and life.

Wood is combustible. Verify the fireplace instructions and applicable requirements before locating slats, including any shelf or trim projections, near an active fireplace.

6. Shiplap as a Contrasting Wall Finish

Shiplap can bring a familiar, linear texture to a room. It may be used as a broader wall treatment where the fireplace layout and instructions permit, with a contrasting surround providing visual definition.

Wood and many wood-based panels are combustible. Do not assume a mantel or a layer of noncombustible finish automatically makes nearby shiplap acceptable; check the exact appliance instructions and assembly requirements.

7. Marble or Quartzite Slab

A natural stone slab makes veining and color variation the main feature of the wall. It can suit a formal or contemporary room where a large-scale pattern is more appealing than small, repeated joints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discuss templating, handling, support, and installation with qualified fabricators and installers. Confirm compatibility of the complete installation with the fireplace requirements rather than relying on the stone name alone.

8. Plaster or Concrete-Look Finish

A smooth or subtly textured plaster-look surface creates a quieter backdrop than strongly patterned tile or stone. It can help the firebox remain the focal point in a minimalist room.

Ask the installer to identify the full finish system and substrate, and verify their suitability for the location and appliance. A finish description alone does not establish heat suitability.

9. Built-In Cabinets and Shelves

Built-ins can combine books, display space, and closed storage around a fireplace. A simpler cabinet finish can keep the surrounding storage from competing with a strongly patterned surround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the full layout around the specific appliance instructions. Check projections, combustible components, ventilation, and any access needed for the appliance; do not build cabinetry in a way that conflicts with those requirements.

10. Asymmetrical Shelving

Asymmetrical shelves can make an off-center fireplace or a room with nearby doors and windows feel more considered. Use the shelves to balance the composition without forcing a symmetrical layout.

Plan shelf support and attachment for the intended load. Also check shelf material, projection, and location against the fireplace instructions before fixing the layout.

11. Recessed Media Wall With an Electric Fireplace

A media wall can combine a television, storage, and an electric fireplace in one composition. It works best when the screen, firebox, wiring, and surrounding finishes are planned together rather than added one at a time.

  • APPEARANCE: The Sideline electric fireplace is designed for recessed in-wall mounting. Follow the electric fireplace manufacturer’s installation instructions for the exact model. Coordinate power, cable routing, mounting support, and access before closing the wall.

12. Dark Tile Surround

Dark tile can give a fireplace a crisp outline and a strong focal point. In a smaller room, using it around the firebox rather than across the entire wall can preserve visual lightness.

Choose tile and installation materials as a complete system for the intended location. Verify the substrate, attachment, and appliance requirements before installation.

13. Zellige or Handmade-Look Tile

Irregular edges and tonal variation give handmade or handmade-look tile a lively surface. It can add texture to a smaller surround without relying on a large-scale pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variation is part of the look, so review a layout with the installer and decide how joints, corners, and edges should finish. Confirm that the selected tile assembly is appropriate for the fireplace location.

14. Herringbone Brick or Tile

Herringbone creates movement while retaining a familiar, orderly pattern. It can be a focused panel or surround detail rather than the dominant finish on every wall surface.

Set out the pattern in relation to the firebox and wall before installation. Check the substrate and complete finish assembly against the fireplace requirements.

15. Board-and-Batten Overmantel

Board-and-batten adds vertical detail and can help connect a fireplace to traditional room trim. A contrasting surround below can give the wall a clear transition between materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many board-and-batten materials are combustible. Verify the location, mantel projection, and required clearances for the specific appliance before choosing this detail.

16. Metal Surround Accents

Metal accents can add a crisp edge or a restrained contrast against stone, tile, or plaster. Finish and sheen help determine whether the effect feels industrial, traditional, or contemporary.

Do not infer suitability from a metal finish alone. Confirm whether the component is part of a listed fireplace assembly or a separate decorative element, and follow the relevant product and appliance instructions.

17. Wallpaper on a Separate Wall Area

Wallpaper can introduce pattern or texture to a fireplace room without making the surround itself busy. It is a design option for wall areas only where the fireplace instructions and applicable requirements permit it.

Combustible finishes need clearance verification. If a fireplace is smoky or the wall shows heat or soot problems, address the underlying issue before adding a finish layer.

18. Two-Tone Paint Framing

Two-tone paint can distinguish the fireplace wall from the rest of the room with minimal visual complexity. A darker central field can frame the firebox, while a lighter surrounding color keeps the overall composition open.

Prepare the surface and choose products for the intended substrate and location. Paint does not change the fireplace’s clearance requirements or make an otherwise unsuitable assembly safe.

19. Minimalist Mantel-Free Linear Fireplace Wall

A linear fireplace without a mantel suits a clean, horizontal composition. A quiet finish can emphasize the opening and keep the wall from feeling crowded.

Use the exact appliance instructions to plan framing, utilities, venting where applicable, and finish materials. If a television is part of the design, follow the fireplace and television manufacturers’ guidance for placement and heat exposure.

Choose an Idea for Your Room

Keep the existing brick visible Limewash or painted brick Masonry condition and finish preparation
Create a strong vertical focal point Full-height stone look, tile, or plaster look Finish system, substrate, and installation requirements
Add storage or display space Built-ins or asymmetrical shelves Projection, support, access, and combustible components

Plan the Wall Before Installation

Mark the firebox, mantel, shelves, television, and cabinets on the wall before committing to a layout. Check the composition from the room’s actual seating area, then review projections and finish locations against the fireplace instructions.

Coordinate electrical work, cable routes, lighting, mounting support, and service access early. For a television above a fireplace, follow the guidance for the specific fireplace and television; do not rely on a mantel or a single temperature check as a substitute for manufacturer requirements.

  1. Identify the fireplace make, model, and type.
  2. Read the appliance instructions and confirm applicable local requirements.
  3. Choose a finish and verify its complete assembly, substrate, and installation method.
  4. Lay out the firebox, mantel, shelves, cabinetry, and any television or wiring.
  5. Have qualified professionals review work involving the appliance, chimney, fuel, electrical systems, or uncertain clearances.

Safety, Clearances, and Wall Shields

Clearances are specific to the fireplace and its installation. NFPA identifies clearance from combustible materials as part of NFPA 211’s scope, but a general code reference does not establish the locally adopted requirements for a particular home. The appliance listing and installation instructions, along with local requirements, need to be checked for the actual project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UL Solutions explains that a listed wall shield can reduce clearance only in applications allowed by the relevant listings. Its certification and instructions govern the shield’s location and use. Do not assume that an arbitrary shield, tile layer, or stone finish makes a wall safe.

For wood-burning fireplaces, CSIA advises keeping combustible items clear of the hearth, using a metal mesh screen to catch flying sparks, and obtaining professional inspection before seasonal use. A screen is not a substitute for required wall clearances or appliance instructions.

Permit and inspection needs depend on the work and local rules. Confirm requirements with the relevant local authority and qualified trades before changing an appliance, fuel connection, electrical system, chimney, venting, or structure.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

Cosmetic work on an existing finish may be suitable for a capable homeowner when the fireplace is not being altered and the product instructions are followed. Start by confirming the surface condition and the exact fireplace requirements.

Consult qualified professionals for appliance installation or changes, chimney and venting work, fuel or electrical work, structural changes, heavy finishes, or uncertainty about clearances and listed assemblies. A finish that looks suitable in a photograph is not proof that it is suitable for a different fireplace.

Common Fireplace Accent Wall Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid copying a design without knowing the fireplace type and model behind it. Do not treat material labels such as “tile,” “stone,” or “heat resistant” as proof that a complete wall assembly complies with the appliance instructions.

Other avoidable problems include placing combustible trim or shelving without checking clearances, blocking access needed by the appliance, choosing finishes before planning wiring, and installing a wall shield without confirming that its listing permits the application. Check products and instructions before installation, not after finishes are in place.

Final Builder Advice

Choose the wall’s visual direction—such as brick, tile, stone, plaster, paint, or millwork—then coordinate it with the room and the fireplace requirements. A clear layout for the opening, surrounding finishes, shelves, and any media equipment helps the wall feel intentional.

Most importantly, plan around the exact appliance and complete finish assembly. The look is only one part of a fireplace wall; installation instructions, clearances, and professional inspection where appropriate matter too.

FAQ

What should I put on the wall around a fireplace?

Options include brick, tile, stone, plaster-look finishes, paint, and millwork. Choose based on the room and verify the complete finish assembly and its location against the exact fireplace instructions.

How close can wood be to a fireplace?

There is no single clearance that applies to every fireplace. Check the exact appliance listing and installation instructions, and confirm applicable local requirements before placing wood trim, shelves, or other combustible items.

Can a wall shield make a combustible wall safe?

Only in applications allowed by the relevant listings. UL Solutions says the shield’s certification and instructions govern its location and use; do not assume any shield reduces clearance for any fireplace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use tile or stone around any fireplace?

Do not assume that a material category alone makes an assembly suitable. Verify the finish, substrate, attachment method, and complete installation against the appliance instructions and project requirements.

Should I use a screen with a wood-burning fireplace?

CSIA advises using a metal mesh screen to catch flying sparks and keeping combustible items clear of the hearth. A screen does not replace required wall clearances or professional inspection.

When should a fireplace be professionally inspected?

CSIA recommends professional inspection before seasonal use. Seek qualified help as well when the fireplace, chimney, venting, or installation condition is uncertain.
