The best clear silicone for an ordinary shower or tub seam is a 100% silicone kitchen-and-bath sealant that is compatible with the surfaces and shower system. GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath Clear is a documented retail option for compatible applications; for a tiled shower built with a named waterproofing system, start with that system maker’s sealant guidance instead.

Clear is a color designation, not a guarantee that a bead will disappear. Choose by compatibility, joint conditions, and the exact product instructions—not by a claim that one brand is what every professional uses.

Quick answer: which clear silicone should you choose?

For a standard shower or tub seam on compatible materials, consider GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath Clear. GE identifies it as 100% silicone and waterproof, and its technical sheet lists shower use and ASTM C920 Class 35 performance. Follow the label and technical sheet for the exact surfaces and conditions.

For tiled or stone showers that are part of a named installation system, use the sealant recommended by that system where specified. LATICRETE documents LATASIL for use with its Hydro Ban and 9235 membranes; MAPEI documents Mapesil T Plus for showers and movement joints.

Clear silicone options by use

Use case Documented option What to check
Ordinary shower or tub seam on compatible surfaces GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath — Clear GE lists it as 100% silicone, waterproof, suitable for showers, and ASTM C920 Class 35. Clear may not look optically invisible; it is not paintable, and GE excludes shower-door tracks and continuous underwater exposure.
LATICRETE tile or waterproofing system LATASIL — Clear LATICRETE documents compatibility with Hydro Ban and 9235 membranes. Its instructions call for 9118 Primer in permanent wet areas; the Clear version lacks the antimicrobial technology identified for the product family.
MAPEI tile and movement-joint work Mapesil T Plus — Clear MAPEI lists showers and changes of plane among its uses. Check the color-specific technical sheet: Clear has a different stated ASTM C920 designation from the general product listing.
Paintability or damp-surface application is essential DAP AMP Crystal Clear This is a modified-polymer hybrid, not silicone. Its sheet permits damp-surface application and painting, and warns that it may discolor under some conditions.

What professionals look for

There is no evidence here for a single brand that all professionals use. A sound selection starts with compatibility: match the sealant to the tile, stone, glass, metal, enclosure, and waterproofing system. A tile professional working within a manufacturer’s system may use that system’s specified silicone rather than substitute a retail product.

Read the chemistry and use statements, not just the front-label marketing. For the primary recommendation in this guide, look for 100% silicone and kitchen-and-bath or wet-area use. ASTM C920 information can help describe a sealant’s performance, but ASTM cautions that compliance alone does not establish suitability for every substrate or application.

Clear does not mean invisible

Clear describes the sealant’s color; it does not promise an invisible joint. GE says its clear/colorless label does not describe transparency and that bead thickness affects cured clarity. On porous stone, textured tile, or a wide or uneven gap, clear can read as a glossy line and reveal shadows or material behind it.

Use clear where its appearance works with the joint and compatible surfaces. Keep the bead neat, and test a short section in an inconspicuous spot when appearance or material compatibility is uncertain. Clear sealant is not a fix for a poorly prepared or oversized joint.

Before you buy

  1. Identify the joint and materials. Note whether it meets glass, tile, stone, metal, acrylic, fiberglass, or another surface, and check the enclosure or shower-system instructions.
  2. Check for a system-specific requirement. In a tiled shower with a named waterproofing system, consult that manufacturer’s sealant guidance before choosing a retail cartridge.
  3. Read the exact product sheet. Confirm wet-area suitability, substrate compatibility, color-specific claims, joint limits, primer requirements, and cure conditions.
  4. Stop and investigate unsuitable conditions. Do not treat a sealant recommendation as a remedy for an unusually wide seam, a shower-door track, continuous submersion, or a structural or waterproofing failure. Follow the relevant system or fixture instructions.

How to prepare and apply the sealant

  1. Remove the old material completely. Cut, peel, or scrape cured silicone; do not expect a solvent to dissolve it. Protect delicate surfaces from blades. Remove mildew contamination as directed by the cleaner manufacturer, then allow the joint to dry.
  2. Prepare the bonding faces. Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound, and free of old caulk, dust, oils, soap residue, and surface treatments. GE warns that soap-and-water cleaning can leave residue that interferes with silicone adhesion.
  3. Test uncertain materials. Test adhesion and compatibility on stone, coated metal, plastics, painted surfaces, or any substrate with uncertain chemistry.
  4. Size the joint according to the product guidance. For GE Advanced Silicone 2, GE calls for backer rod beyond a joint size of 3/8 by 3/8 inch, a bead 1/8 to 1/2 inch thick, and a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio. Treat these as GE’s instructions for that product, not universal rules.
  5. Apply and tool a continuous bead. GE directs users to apply a continuous bead under positive pressure and tool it within 5–10 minutes. Use light pressure to press the sealant onto both joint faces and avoid voids; excessive tooling or thinning can affect performance.
  6. Remove masking tape promptly. Remove it immediately after tooling to reduce the risk of tearing the bead.
  7. Wait for the stated water-exposure and cure conditions. Follow the exact label and technical sheet for the product, bead size, temperature, and humidity.

Water-ready is not the same as fully cured

GE’s 30-minute water-ready claim applies only to a bead no larger than 3/16 inch, at a minimum of 65°F and 50% relative humidity. Outside those conditions, GE says not to expose the sealant to water for eight hours and not to touch or clean it for 24 hours or until fully cured. GE gives 24 hours as a typical full cure and notes that low temperature or humidity slows curing.

Use the instructions for the exact product and conditions rather than assuming a generic wait time. Where practical, schedule a full day without shower use, while still following the manufacturer’s stated requirements.

When a simple caulk repair is not the answer

Do not use a generic sealant recommendation for a seam beneath a shower-door track, a continuously submerged location, or a structural repair. GE specifically excludes shower-door tracks, continuous underwater exposure, and structural repairs. Follow the enclosure or shower-system instructions for drainage paths and other designed details.

Sealant also does not repair a failed waterproofing assembly. If the shower has persistent leakage, loose tile, or evidence of water damage, investigate the cause rather than relying on a new bead to conceal it. A caulk joint is not a replacement for the shower’s waterproofing system.

What is a good clear silicone for a shower?

For an ordinary seam on compatible surfaces, GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath Clear is a documented retail option. If the shower uses a named tile or waterproofing system, follow that system’s sealant guidance instead.

Is clear silicone invisible after it cures?

  • 10-year mold-free product protection is resistant to odor and stain-causing mold and mildew growth
  • Brand name: GE Momentive Performance Materials

Can I use any 100% silicone in a tiled shower?

No. Check compatibility with the tile, stone, membrane, and other materials, and follow the shower-system manufacturer’s instructions. ASTM C920 compliance alone does not establish suitability for every application.

Is DAP AMP Crystal Clear a silicone?

No. It is a modified-polymer hybrid sealant. Its damp-surface and paintability claims may suit some needs, but it should not be described as 100% silicone.

How soon can I use the shower after applying silicone?

Follow the exact product instructions and conditions. GE’s 30-minute water-ready claim applies only to a bead no larger than 3/16 inch at a minimum of 65°F and 50% relative humidity; it is not a blanket full-cure time.

Can I put new silicone over old silicone?

Remove the old material completely before applying new sealant. Prepare clean, dry bonding faces and follow the product’s surface-preparation instructions.
