A window heat-pump air conditioner can cool a room and, when its documentation supports the conditions, provide heat by moving heat from outdoors indoors. It may suit a single room where window mounting is allowed, but a heating-mode label alone does not show how well a unit will heat in cold weather. Compare the exact model’s room-unit ratings, heating range and output, window fit, and electrical requirements before buying.
What a Window Heat Pump Does
In cooling mode, the unit moves heat from indoors to outdoors; in heating mode, it reverses that process. This is the basic air-source heat-pump principle described by ENERGY STAR. Window models vary, so check the manufacturer’s documentation for the particular unit’s heating operation and low-temperature limits.
Not every window air conditioner advertised as having heat uses heat-pump heating. Check the product specifications and manual to determine the heating type, capacity, permitted outdoor operating range, and any conditions that affect heating performance. Do not assume heating capacity matches cooling capacity.
For example, GE describes its AWGP12WWF as an 11,000-BTU smart heat/cool window air conditioner with a heat pump, but says the model is no longer being manufactured. It illustrates the product category, not a current recommendation. Verify current availability and exact-model details before considering any product.

Start With the Room and Its Winter Conditions
Consider room area, ceiling height, insulation, sun exposure, air leakage, occupancy, and local weather. Broad square-foot claims are not a substitute for checking the room and the product’s documented capacity. ENERGY STAR recommends professional sizing for heat-pump systems; its guidance on home systems should not be treated as a specific sizing chart for window units.
For winter use, find the model’s heating output at relevant outdoor temperatures and its permitted operating range. If documentation does not show that the unit can meet the room’s needs at local cold-weather conditions, plan another heat source or consider a different system. The sources do not establish one window model as suitable for every climate.
How to Compare Window Heat-Pump Models
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Room fit and capacity | Cooling capacity and any available heating capacity; account for the room’s actual conditions rather than relying on an unqualified square-foot claim. |
| Cold-weather heating | Minimum outdoor operating temperature, heating output in cold conditions, documented defrost behavior, and whether backup heat is needed. |
| Efficiency | Room-air-conditioner metrics measured on a comparable basis. Do not apply central-system SEER2 or HSPF2 thresholds to a room unit unless its documentation explicitly supplies comparable ratings. |
| Window and installation fit | Opening dimensions, sash style, mounting method, clearances, unit weight, support-bracket requirement, and drainage instructions. |
| Electrical fit | Voltage, plug type, current draw, and circuit requirements on the product label and in the manual. |
| Comfort and support | Documented noise, airflow, fan and thermostat settings, warranty, parts, filter availability, and service options. |
| Purchase and total cost | Current stock, included installation hardware, and the cost of any required professional work. Prices and availability change, so verify them at purchase time. |
Use the Right Efficiency Evidence
Room air conditioners have separate ENERGY STAR criteria from central air conditioners, as the U.S. Department of Energy explains. Compare room-unit data with room-unit data on the same test basis; do not treat central heat-pump ratings as equivalent evidence of window-unit performance.

ENERGY STAR’s cold-climate criteria for central air-source heat pumps include performance measures at 5°F. Those criteria apply to central systems, not window units, and do not prove that a room unit meets the same standard. For a window model, use its own manufacturer documentation to assess heating performance at the temperatures you expect.
Check the Window and Electrical Setup
- Measure the clear window opening and confirm that the sash and window style are compatible with the model.
- Check the unit’s dimensions, weight, required clearances, and mounting instructions. Confirm whether the model requires an exterior support bracket and whether compatible hardware is included.
- Verify voltage, plug type, current draw, and circuit requirements against the product label and manual. Do not assume that units of similar cooling capacity share the same electrical requirements.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation and drainage instructions; mounting and support requirements vary by model.
- Before installation, check landlord, building, and local rules for window-mounted equipment.
ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner dataset includes fields for attributes such as heating mode, voltage, mounting, and support-bracket requirements. Use the listing and manual for the exact model rather than assuming those details are universal.
Operate and Maintain the Unit as Directed
ENERGY STAR’s heat-pump guidance recommends steady temperature settings, avoiding automatic heat/cool switching when unusual weather could cause unwanted mode changes, using auto or sufficiently low fan speed, and cleaning filters when visibly dirty or when prompted. Confirm that the particular window model supports these settings and follow its manual for operation and care.

Buying Checklist
- Describe the room and its conditions, including insulation, sun exposure, ceiling height, air leakage, and use.
- Compare the model’s cooling capacity with the room need, without treating a general square-foot claim as a guarantee.
- Evaluate heating separately: verify the outdoor operating range and output at relevant winter temperatures.
- Compare only room-unit efficiency information on a like-for-like basis.
- Confirm window compatibility, mounting, weight, clearance, support, drainage, and electrical requirements.
- Check current product availability, certification listing, warranty, and manual for the exact model number.
- If winter conditions exceed the unit’s documented capabilities, plan backup heat or consider another system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do window air conditioners have heat pumps?
Some do, while other heat-capable window air conditioners may use a different heating method. Check the exact model’s specifications and manual for heating type and performance details.
Can a window heat pump heat in winter?
It can heat when the model’s documented operating range and output support the outdoor conditions. Check the manufacturer’s data for the relevant temperatures and plan another heat source if the documentation does not support local winter conditions.
What size window heat pump do I need?
Consider the room’s area, ceiling height, insulation, sun exposure, air leakage, occupancy, and local weather, then compare those needs with the exact model’s cooling and heating data. A broad square-foot claim does not account for every room; seek professional sizing advice for difficult loads.

Can I compare a window heat pump’s rating with a central heat pump’s rating?
Not as if the figures were interchangeable. The DOE distinguishes room air conditioners from central equipment, and central heat-pump criteria do not establish the performance of a window unit.
Does every window heat pump need a support bracket or the same outlet?
No. Mounting and electrical requirements vary by model. Check the exact unit’s product listing, label, and manual for bracket requirements, voltage, plug type, current draw, and circuit requirements.
