The best way to control bathroom odors is to address the source first, exhaust air outdoors, and manage moisture. A spray or air-cleaning product may be a supplement, but it cannot be assumed to solve the cause of a recurring smell.
Start by checking for soiled surfaces, dirty drains, damp textiles, standing water, or persistent moisture. Then make sure the bathroom fan works and sends air directly outdoors. If an odor persists or its cause is unclear, investigate it rather than relying on fragrance.
Bathroom Odor Control Options Compared
These approaches serve different purposes and work best as parts of a system, rather than as interchangeable products.
| Approach | What it addresses | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Source control | Potential odor sources, such as soiled surfaces, dirty drains, damp textiles, or standing water | EPA identifies eliminating or reducing pollution sources as usually the most effective indoor-air-quality strategy. |
| Bathroom fan or suitable window ventilation | Moisture and room air | A fan should exhaust directly outdoors, not into an attic or another interior space. Opening a window depends on conditions. |
| Fan controls | Keeping ventilation running when needed | EPA’s multifamily guidance lists timer, occupancy sensor, humidistat, or continuous operation as options; suitability depends on the building. |
| Air cleaning or fragrance products | Supplemental air treatment or perceived scent | These do not replace source control or ventilation. Results depend on the product and what is causing the odor. |
Start by Finding the Source
Check plausible sources before choosing an odor product. Look for soiled surfaces, a dirty drain, damp towels or bath mats, standing water, or moisture that keeps returning. Clean appropriately, remove wet materials, and investigate recurring problems.

EPA’s indoor-air guidance prioritizes source control, followed by ventilation, with filtration or air cleaning as another strategy. That guidance does not establish that every spray merely masks odor, nor does it provide a controlled bathroom-specific ranking of odor products.
Make Sure Bathroom Air Exhausts Outdoors
A fan’s sound alone does not show that it moves enough air. EPA says a bathroom fan should exhaust sufficient air directly outdoors—not into an attic or another space inside the home. If there is no fan or the existing fan does not work, EPA recommends installing one.
During and after a shower, use a fan that vents outdoors or open a window if conditions allow. Outdoor air may not be suitable when pollution, pollen, extreme temperatures, or humidity make bringing it inside undesirable.

Keep Ventilation Running Long Enough
People may switch a fan off as soon as they leave, even when moisture remains. EPA’s 2021 multifamily-upgrade guidance lists several control options: an occupancy sensor, a humidistat, a timer that runs for 20 minutes or more after vacancy, or continuous operation. These are options in that guidance, not a universal requirement for every home.

Use Air Cleaning as a Supplement
EPA treats filtration and air cleaning as distinct from source control and ventilation. Performance depends on what pollutants a device can capture and how air moves through its cleaning element. A small air cleaner should not be expected to fix a continuing odor source or moisture problem.

Fragrance products may change the room’s perceived scent, but the available research for this article did not establish bathroom-specific comparative results for sprays and other odor eliminators. Treat them as optional supplements, not a substitute for addressing the cause.
When to Investigate Further
If an odor keeps returning after cleaning and ventilation, look for an unresolved source or moisture issue. Persistent sewage-like or otherwise unexplained odors may warrant appropriate building or plumbing investigation. This is a reason to seek an assessment, not a diagnosis of a particular fault.
If the fan is ineffective or vents to the wrong place, a suitable bathroom exhaust fan or ventilation-duct repair may be worth investigating. Verify airflow, noise, duct routing, controls, product suitability, and local requirements before choosing equipment or arranging work. No specific fan model or installation service was evaluated for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to get rid of bathroom odors?
Begin by finding and reducing the source, then ventilate the room. EPA recommends a bathroom fan that exhausts outdoors, or opening a window if conditions allow, during and after a shower. Air cleaning can be a supplement.
Does a bathroom fan need to vent outdoors?
Yes. EPA guidance says bathroom exhaust air should go directly outdoors, not into an attic or another interior space. A fan that makes noise is not necessarily exhausting enough air.
How long should I run the bathroom fan after a shower?
EPA’s 2021 multifamily guidance lists a timer that runs for 20 minutes or more after vacancy as one possible control strategy. Building context matters, so this should not be treated as a universal rule for every home.

Will an air purifier or spray solve a recurring bathroom smell?
Not necessarily. Air-cleaning performance depends on what the device captures and how air passes through it. Fragrance may change perceived scent, but neither product type replaces finding a recurring source and addressing moisture or ventilation.
What should I do if the smell persists?
Recheck surfaces, drains, damp materials, standing water, and moisture. Confirm that the fan works and exhausts outdoors. If the odor remains unexplained—especially if it smells sewage-like—consider appropriate building or plumbing investigation rather than assuming a specific cause.
