Short answer: The available gumamela dish-soap PDFs do not prove that a finished gumamela dishwashing liquid reliably kills bacteria in household use, and laboratory findings about gumamela do not show that it prevents cancer in people. The studies concern different preparations and tests, so their results should not be treated as evidence for a validated consumer product.
What does “gumamela antibacterial dish soap” refer to?
Gumamela is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Student research documents describe attempts to use it in dishwashing formulations, but the located documents do not establish a standardized commercial product or a reproducible consumer formula. A student project’s observations are not equivalent to controlled testing of a product made consistently and used under ordinary kitchen conditions.
To judge a claim about a finished dish liquid, a useful study would need to identify the plant part, flower color, extraction solvent and concentration, full formulation, test organisms, and repeatable methods for measuring cleaning and bacterial reduction. It would also need to address preservation, shelf life, and safety. The documents described here do not supply robust head-to-head evidence on those points.
What did the antibacterial gumamela studies test?
Laboratory tests of flower extracts
A pharmacology abstract in Davao Medical School Foundation’s Compendium of Abstracts, Volume 2, Issue 1 (2019), describes ethanol extracts from red, yellow, and violet gumamela flowers tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using a zone-of-inhibition method. Oxacillin and amikacin served as positive controls for the respective organisms. The abstract reports inhibition by purple flower extract against both bacteria, while yellow and red extracts showed minimal inhibition against P. aeruginosa. These are in-vitro results for extracts, not a test of finished dishwashing liquid or evidence of fewer infections. Read the DMSF abstract.

What student dish-soap documents establish
A Scribd-hosted student document attributed to Fria Joy Cipriano reports qualitative observations involving plates and sponges. It says that its particular salt-preserved preparation lasted two to four days. The available text does not validate the preparation’s preservative system, quantify antibacterial performance, or establish safety; the reported duration should not be generalized to other recipes. A separate student document from Naguilian National High School, dated July 2022, frames dishwashing efficacy, odor, and possible skin reactions as questions for study. Its indexed copy is not sound evidence for broad claims that gumamela dish liquid is more effective, gentler, or safer than retail products. Read the July 2022 document.

Why lab antibacterial results may not predict kitchen results
A laboratory inhibition test asks whether a sample can inhibit bacterial growth under specified conditions. Washing dishes adds other variables: grease, food residues, dilution, contact time, rinsing, and the surface being cleaned. A result for an ethanol flower extract therefore cannot be assumed to predict how a formulated liquid works on dishes or sponges.
A 2002 study of a different commercial antibacterial dishwashing liquid illustrates the distinction. At 2–4% concentrations, organisms suspended in the tested liquid fell below detection after 24 hours, yet the liquid did not significantly reduce organisms in used sponges containing food residues over that period. The study was not about gumamela, but it shows why suspension-test results do not by themselves demonstrate effectiveness in household conditions. See the PubMed record.

Does gumamela prevent cancer?
No human cancer-prevention benefit is established by the cited gumamela work. The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) summarizes a modified Ames Salmonella assay in which researchers compared gumamela extract with mitomycin C and mineral water and observed reduced mutation in most trials. That finding concerns antimutagenic activity in a bacterial laboratory assay; it is not evidence that consuming or using gumamela prevents cancer in people. Read PCHRD’s summary.

Results also depend on preparation and test conditions. A 2010 paper indexed by PubMed reports that most nitrite-treated samples it tested were mutagenic under its Ames assay conditions, including a water extract of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. This is not evidence that ordinary contact with gumamela products causes harm. It does show why a result from one extract or assay cannot be generalized into a broad claim about the plant, and why “prevents cancer” is not justified. See the 2010 paper’s PubMed record.

- Check what was tested: a raw extract, a finished formula, a suspension of bacteria, or dishes and sponges in realistic washing conditions are different test materials.
- Look for preparation details: flower color, plant part, extraction method, solvent, and concentration can change what is being tested.
- Separate cleaning from disinfection: removing food and grease is not the same as demonstrating bacterial reduction, and neither establishes prevention of illness.
- Look for repeatability and safety: useful evidence should describe preservation, storage, contact exposure, and appropriate safeguards, rather than relying on an informal observation.
- Keep claims within their scope: the U.S. FDA says there is not sufficient evidence that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better than plain soap and water at preventing illness. That statement concerns consumer antibacterial soaps and body washes, not a direct test of dish detergents. Read the FDA consumer guidance.
Regulatory treatment depends on intended use, marketing claims, and jurisdiction. The FDA explains how U.S. product classification can depend on those factors and notes that plant-derived ingredients are not automatically safe. This does not determine the legal status of a particular gumamela dishwashing formula elsewhere; check the relevant local regulator for local requirements. Read the FDA classification guidance.
