A rip-fence saddle is a fitted jig that rides on an auxiliary fence attached to a table saw’s rip fence, supporting workpieces for operations such as bevel cuts, half-laps, and tenons. It can improve support and control for the setup, but the sources do not quantify accuracy gains or show that a saddle by itself reduces injury or kickback risk.
Choose a design for your saw fence, its obstructions, and the workpiece orientation. Secure and square the auxiliary fence, make sure the saddle slides without free play, and follow the saw manufacturer’s instructions for the specific cut.
What a rip-fence saddle does
A saddle is a shop-built support that fits over an auxiliary fence attached to the saw’s rip fence. Depending on its design, it can support stiles or other workpieces, hold upright parts for half-laps or tenons, or support a workpiece for bevel cuts. It is not a universal accessory: dimensions and clearances must suit the saw fence and intended operation.
Published designs illustrate different uses. WOOD Magazine describes a saddle for bevel-cut post caps and supporting stiles and other workpieces. A separate tall-parts plan describes using a saddle for upright project parts, half-laps, and tenons. Neither source establishes that one design is best for every saw or task.

Compare the published designs
| Design | Published use | Fit and setup considerations |
|---|---|---|
| WOOD Magazine rip-fence saddle | Bevel-cut post caps; support for stiles and other workpieces | The described auxiliary fence is screwed securely to the metal rip fence, sits 1 inch above its top edge, and must be 90 degrees to the saw table. Size the fence so the saddle rides smoothly without free play. |
| Tall-parts tablesaw saddle | Upright project parts, half-lap joints, and tenons | The plan uses MDF. It sizes the outside face in relation to fence height and top thickness, allows for fence obstructions, and sizes the top in relation to fence width. Its backer supports the upright piece and helps prevent blowout. |
Compare designs by the workpiece orientation and operation, your fence dimensions and obstructions, the prescribed clearances, and how the workpiece will be secured. Do not assume dimensions from one plan will fit another saw.
Fit and construction considerations
Start with the actual saw fence and the plan for the operation. The auxiliary fence must be secure and square to the saw table. The saddle should fit and slide without free play; a poor fit can undermine support and control.
The tall-parts plan uses MDF, noting seasonal movement as a reason a close-fitting jig may otherwise pinch or fit loosely. Follow the material and sizing details of the design you choose rather than treating one material or dimension as universal. The plan’s backer holds an upright workpiece square during machining and helps prevent blowout.
Safety limits and setup
A saddle is a work-support jig, not a substitute for safe saw use. It does not make a cut safe on its own, prevent kickback, or replace guarding, correct rip-fence use, a riving knife, or push devices.

SawStop’s table-saw safety manual states, “Never cut any workpiece freehand.” It explains that freehand cutting can cause binding and kickback and directs users to use the rip fence for rip cuts. Follow the manual for the exact saw and setup. Its guidance calls for a push stick in a specified setup when the fence-to-blade distance is less than 150 mm (about 6 inches), and recommends an auxiliary fence and push block for certain rip cuts narrower than two inches when a push stick is unsuitable. These are instructions in that manual, not universal dimensions for every saw or saddle.
The same SawStop manual says featherboards can help maintain workpiece position relative to the fence and table. It warns that a horizontal featherboard should be mounted in front of the blade’s leading edge to avoid kickback risk. Follow the instructions for your saw and accessory.
SawStop’s T-Glide Advance fence manual gives setup guidance for that specific fence system, including positioning its adjustable face along an imaginary 45-degree line from the blade’s front. Do not apply that system-specific instruction as a universal saddle measurement. Its manual also advises supporting long material so it does not move or shift past the table edge.
The UK Health and Safety Executive identifies blade contact and ejected workpieces as hazards in circular saw bench work. It describes the riving knife as helping stop wood from closing onto the blade and being ejected. Its specifications and figures apply to its workplace guidance context; use the instructions for your own saw rather than treating them as universal consumer-saw directions.

Alternatives and accessories
A saddle is one option for supporting work at a table saw, not a required upgrade. For more extensive fence-based joinery work, INCRA describes its TS-LS precision fence and joinery system as a broader commercial alternative. The manufacturer lists versions with 32-inch or 52-inch capacities and specifies fit conditions for saw-table depth and mounting surfaces. Check current specifications, compatibility, and availability before considering it.
For a saddle build, MDF board is a material used in the cited tall-parts plan. A table-saw push block is identified in the SawStop manual for a specified narrow-rip situation with an auxiliary fence. Neither is automatically suitable for every jig or cut; follow the chosen plan and saw manual.
Build and setup checklist
- Choose the operation and design. Decide how the workpiece will be oriented and which published design suits the task.
- Check the actual fence. Account for its dimensions and obstructions rather than relying on assumed or borrowed measurements.
- Secure and square the auxiliary fence. Follow the chosen plan and verify that the fence is fixed securely and square to the saw table.
- Fit and test the saddle. Confirm that it slides without free play and does not pinch. Check that the backer supports the workpiece as the design intends.
- Follow the saw’s instructions for the cut. Use appropriate guarding and push devices, and support long material as directed by the manufacturer.
FAQ
What is a rip-fence saddle used for?
It rides on an auxiliary fence attached to a table saw’s rip fence to support workpieces. Published designs describe using saddles for bevel cuts, supporting stiles, and holding upright parts for half-laps or tenons.
Does a rip-fence saddle make table saw cuts safer?
The cited plans support the practical benefit of improved workpiece support and control for particular setups. They do not quantify injury reduction or establish that a saddle independently prevents kickback. Follow the saw manual and use the required safety equipment and techniques.

How should a rip-fence saddle fit?
Fit depends on the saw fence, obstructions, and chosen design. The cited WOOD Magazine design calls for the saddle to ride smoothly without free play. Use the chosen plan’s clearances and verify the auxiliary fence is securely attached and square to the saw table.
Can I use the same saddle design on any table saw?
No. The saddle and auxiliary fence must suit the actual fence dimensions and the intended task. Compare the plan’s requirements with your saw and follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
Is a rip-fence saddle the same as a precision fence system?
No. A saddle is a task-specific support jig. A system such as INCRA’s TS-LS is a broader fence and joinery product with its own capacity and fit conditions; check the manufacturer’s current specifications for compatibility.
