Avalanche Roof Rake Review: When This Snow Removal System Makes Sense

The Avalanche AVA500 is a specialized ground-operated option for clearing edge snow from most asphalt-shingle roofs; the AVA750 is intended for specified specialty surfaces. Neither removes ice dams or determines whether a roof can safely carry its snow load.

The Avalanche Original 500 (AVA500) is worth considering for proactive, ground-based snow removal from the eaves of most asphalt-shingle roofs, provided you have a safe place to work and a clear snow-fall zone. The AVA750 is the manufacturer-specified option for metal, cedar shake, tile, or solar-panel roofs. Neither model removes ice dams or establishes how much snow your roof can safely carry.

Removing snow at the roof edge can reduce one ingredient in ice-dam formation, but it is not a cure: the Avalanche manual says the system does not remove ice dams. If you have an existing leak, structural warning signs, overhead wires near the work area, or no safe way to keep people and property clear, do not treat this as a DIY tool purchase decision.

How the Avalanche system works

The Avalanche is a manually operated system with a wheeled cutter frame and a long plastic slide. From the ground, the user rolls the frame upward from the lower roof edge; as snow releases, it travels down the slide. The manufacturer’s manual describes assembling the frame, slide kit, and snap-connected fiberglass poles without tools. This is a ground-operated tool, not powered equipment, and it does not make snow removal risk-free.

The manufacturer lists the AVA500 with 1.5-inch wheels, four lightweight fiberglass pole sections forming a 15½-foot pole, and a 17-inch by 12-foot plastic slide. Actual access depends on eave height, yard setback, roof geometry, snow conditions, and your ability to control the pole. Measure your situation before buying; the listed pole length is not a promise that it will reach every roof.

Which Avalanche model fits your roof?

Model Manufacturer-listed features When to consider it
Avalanche Original 500 (AVA500) 1.5-inch wheels; 17-inch by 12-foot plastic slide; four fiberglass pole sections forming a 15½-foot pole Most asphalt-shingle roofs
Avalanche 750 (AVA750) 3-inch wheels; cut- and tear-resistant vinyl-coated polyester slide Metal, cedar shake, tile, or solar-panel roofs, as specified by the manufacturer
Avalanche Premium Package (AVA1000) AVA500 combined with a SnowRake! Deluxe 20 An optional bundle for someone who wants both a slide-cutter system and a conventional rake head

Choose according to roof material and the manufacturer’s stated fit, not a blanket assumption that one model is safer for every surface. Neither model guarantees damage-free use. For roof-material concerns or uncertain clearances, consult the roofing or solar professional familiar with the installation.

The exact phrase Avalanche AVA500 roof snow rake may help when looking for the standard model. Check the manufacturer or seller for current availability, included parts, price, and shipping before ordering.

When it makes sense—and when it does not

The AVA500 may make sense if snow regularly accumulates at an accessible asphalt-shingle eave, you can operate from a safe ground position, and you can keep people, pets, vehicles, and breakable property away from the release area. The manual says keeping five feet of roof edge clear will typically prevent ice dams; treat that as the manufacturer’s operating claim, not a guarantee for every home.

It is not the right tool for an existing ice dam, a roof leak, or a job that requires chipping or scraping ice. Ice dams block meltwater at the roof edge, and backed-up water can leak into a home. The University of Minnesota Extension explains that recurring ice dams are associated with snow on the roof and sustained temperature differences across it; air leakage and insulation problems are underlying issues to investigate. Snow removal is a short-term measure, not a permanent fix.

Do not attempt removal as a DIY tool job if the building shows bulging sidewalls, a sagging or nonstraight roofline, or other signs of structural distress. Seek qualified professional or engineering advice; do not climb onto or enter a distressed building while snow remains on the roof. Likewise, reconsider the job if there is no safe ground position, overhead electrical wires are nearby, or the snow-fall zone cannot be controlled.

Safe setup and use

  1. Check the roof and building from a safe position. If you see bulging sidewalls, a nonstraight or sagging roofline, or other signs of failure, stop and seek qualified advice.
  2. Check for overhead electrical wires and keep the tool and work area away from them. If you cannot maintain safe clearance, do not proceed.
  3. Plan the snow-fall zone. Keep people, pets, vehicles, and breakable property out of the area where snow may land. Snow can release in large, fast-moving chunks.
  4. Assemble the pole and slide according to the manual. Use only a length you can control from the ground; do not climb a ladder or onto the roof to extend your reach.
  5. Start at the lower roof edge and roll the frame upward slowly, allowing the slide to follow beneath the snow. Work along the edge in controlled passes.
  6. Stop if you encounter resistance, catching, or an unexpected obstruction. The manual advises stopping and adjusting rather than forcing the tool.
  7. After removal, inspect for damage. A roof rake or slide system cannot guarantee zero damage; the University of Minnesota Extension warns that rakes can damage roofing, and FEMA recommends inspection after snow removal following a large snow event.

Do not use the system to chip ice or aggressively scrape roofing. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and stop if the tool does not move as expected.

Price, warranty, and replacement slide

At the research desk’s capture on August 10, 2026, MARSHALLTOWN listed the AVA500 at $172.55. That is a dated reference, not a guaranteed current price; availability, shipping, and retailer prices can change. Confirm the price and included parts with the seller before purchase.

The manufacturer manual states a six-month limited warranty to the original purchaser for material or workmanship defects under normal use. It excludes, among other things, misuse, abrasion, corrosion, negligence, accidents, faulty assembly, and tampering. The plastic slide is a normal-wear item and is not covered by the warranty. The manual identifies the slide-with-wheels assembly as replacement part AVA500-SK; verify current availability and compatibility with the manufacturer or seller.

Verdict

The Avalanche AVA500 is a specialized option for ground-based edge-snow removal on most asphalt-shingle roofs. It makes the most sense where snow recurs, the eave is reachable from a safe position, and the landing zone can be kept clear. Consider the AVA750 instead for the specialty roof surfaces identified by the manufacturer.

FAQ

Does the Avalanche roof rake remove ice dams?

Which Avalanche model is intended for asphalt shingles?

MARSHALLTOWN specifies the AVA500 for most asphalt-shingle roofs. It lists the AVA750 for metal, cedar shake, tile, or solar-panel roofs. Check roof material and clearances before choosing.

MARSHALLTOWN listed the AVA500 at $172.55 on August 10, 2026. Price and availability can change, so verify the current listing before purchase.

What should I do if my roof shows signs of structural distress?

Do not use the rake as a substitute for an assessment. If you see bulging sidewalls, a sagging or nonstraight roofline, or other signs of failure, seek qualified professional or engineering advice and avoid climbing onto or entering a distressed building while snow remains on the roof.
