Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBuild a CD cabinet that looks like furniture by designing around the cases you own, dividing the cabinet into short shelf spans, and finishing the visible edges and base deliberately. A useful shallow starter design is about 32 inches wide, 32-3/4 inches high, and 8-1/2 inches deep, with two bays, adjustable shelves, and a securely fitted back.
Those are planning dimensions, not a tested load rating or a universal cut list. Measure your media, actual sheet goods, shelf hardware, and chosen door system before cutting; package sizes and wall conditions vary.
Measure Your CDs Before Designing
A standard single-CD jewel case measures about 5.59 inches by 4.92 inches by 0.39 inch (142 × 125 × 10 mm). For cases stored upright with their spines facing out, the 5.59-inch dimension drives shelf depth, the 4.92-inch dimension drives clear opening height, and the spine thickness helps estimate capacity. Slim cases, multi-disc cases, digipaks, and DVD-style packages can differ, so measure the actual collection you intend to store.
Make a small prototype bay from scrap or temporary spacers. Check that your tallest and thickest cases stand upright, slide out easily, and clear any doors. Leave room for handling and the shelf-pin system instead of designing to the exact case dimensions.

A Shallow Two-Bay Starter Layout
For a furniture-like cabinet, use a hardwood-veneer plywood case, a central divider, a fitted back, and a finished plinth or short legs. The divider creates two shorter shelf spans; the base, consistent edges, and restrained door gaps help the cabinet feel like a considered piece of furniture rather than a storage rack.
| Planning feature | Starter dimension or arrangement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Outside case | About 32 in W × 32-3/4 in H × 8-1/2 in D | Actual panel thickness, back and door arrangement |
| Case and divider | Nominal 3/4 in material; one center divider | Measure sheet goods before cutting joinery |
| Shelves | Four adjustable shelves, making five rows in each bay | Use suitable shelf supports and leave installation clearance |
| Bay openings | Roughly 15 in clear width and 5.65 in clear height per row | Allow for shelf pins, real cases, and finger clearance |
| Shelf depth | About 7-1/2 in in a roughly 7-3/4 in-deep interior | Check clearance for cases, back, and any doors |
Ten compartments with roughly 15 inches of clear width could hold about 35 standard jewel cases each, or about 350 total. This is a planning estimate based on standard cases and room for handling—not a guaranteed capacity. If your collection includes box sets or digipaks, reserve a taller adjustable row or a bay for mixed media.

Why the Divider and Back Matter
The center divider approximately halves each shelf span. That is a practical way to reduce the chance of sag compared with stretching a shelf across the full cabinet width. Shelf deflection depends on the material, span, support method, and load together; AWI casework guidance treats shelf core and shelf-support hardware as a system, not as isolated parts. Do not assume that nominal 3/4-inch material makes any shelf span suitable for any load.
A securely fitted back helps the case resist racking, the sideways distortion that can make a cabinet feel loose and leave doors out of alignment. Attach the back firmly while the case is square. It is structural work, not merely a decorative cover.

Materials and Hardware
- 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood for the sides, top, bottom, divider, and shelves; plywood or solid wood may also suit the doors.
- 1/4-inch or thicker suitable back material, attached securely for racking resistance.
- Hardwood edging or face-frame stock to finish exposed plywood edges.
- A plinth or leg material, if desired.
- Shelf pins or another support system appropriate for the shelves and intended use.
- Wood glue, appropriate fasteners, sandpaper, and a finish system suited to the chosen materials.
- Optional: concealed hinges, compatible mounting plates, pulls or knobs, and an anti-tip restraint with wall-appropriate fasteners where needed.
Choose paint- or stain-grade materials based on the finish you want. Match the wood, stain, and hardware to nearby furniture. Measure the actual plywood thickness before cutting dados, rabbets, or door reveals; nominal dimensions are not exact dimensions.
Step-by-Step Build Sequence
- Inventory and prototype. Measure the tallest, deepest, and thickest packages in your collection. Make a temporary bay and test case fit, finger clearance, and door clearance before settling the layout.
- Choose the look. Decide whether a face frame and inset doors suit a traditional room, or slab doors and concealed hinges suit a cleaner, contemporary look. Choose a plinth for a grounded appearance or legs for a lighter one before cutting.
- Cut and assemble the case. Cut the sides, top, bottom, divider, shelves, and back accurately. Use dados or rabbets, dowels, suitable fasteners, or concealed pocket screws according to your tools and materials. Dry-fit, glue, clamp, and check that the case is square.
- Fit the back and divider. Secure the back while the case is square. Install the central divider as part of the structure so the shelves have shorter spans.
- Install shelf supports. Lay out the adjustable-shelf holes consistently and use hardware appropriate to the panel and intended load. Account for the hardware’s installation clearance and test the shelves in place.
- Add furniture details. Fit the edging or face frame, base, and top. Aim for clean edges, deliberate proportions, and even reveals rather than relying on added trim to disguise a weak or out-of-square case.
- Fit optional doors. For concealed hinges, select the exact hinge and mounting plate first. Follow that manufacturer’s installation sheet and use its compatible template or jig; test the boring pattern on scrap before drilling the finished doors. A 35 mm concealed cabinet hinge jig can help, but it does not replace checking the selected hinge’s instructions. If you want to avoid hinge boring, use open shelves, suitable surface-mount hinges, or commissioned doors.
- Sand and finish. Where practical, finish door faces, shelf edges, and interior surfaces before hardware makes them harder to reach. Follow the instructions for the specific stain, paint, and topcoat you use; finish schedules are product-specific.
- Load and restrain. Put the heaviest media in the lowest rows. Where the cabinet could be climbed on, pulled, or bumped—especially in a home with children—secure it to the wall using a restraint and fasteners suited to the actual wall construction.
Make the Cabinet Fit Your Collection
To add capacity, add width with another bay or divider rather than extending shelf spans without checking the material and support design. Add taller rows for nonstandard packages only after checking reach, case clearance, and how the revised layout affects stability. A full-size layout or scrap prototype is a useful check before committing to the final cut list.

- 【Seamless Mounting Support】: Utilize the detachable cabinet door mounting supports to hold heavy doors in perfect alignment with the frame. Fine-threaded adjustment rods allow you to dial in the exact height, turning a difficult two-person task into a stable, one-person cabinet door installation.
- 【Deviation-Free Drilling】: The rigid CNC aluminum body and quick clamp securely hold boards up to 38mm thick. Non-marring rubber pads prevent slipping, ensuring precise 90° tear-out free cup holes even on dense hardwoods like Oak or Maple.
- 【Built-In Dust Extraction Port】: Keep indoor workspaces spotless. The standard 1-3/8" dust port connects directly to shop vacs to remove chips instantly. This reduces heat buildup, prevents twist-lock clogging, and significantly extends the drill bit's life.
A properly built case, finished edges, a considered base, and doors that fit consistently do more for a furniture-like result than ornate trim. Build the cabinet rigidly, keep dense media low, and select a wall restraint for the setting rather than treating it as a substitute for sound construction.

How deep should a CD shelf be?
A standard jewel case is about 5.59 inches deep on its broad face. The starter layout uses shelves about 7-1/2 inches deep, but check your cases, back, doors, and desired finger clearance before building.
Why put a divider in the middle?
A center divider shortens the shelf spans and helps support the case. Shelf behavior also depends on the panel, load, and shelf-support hardware, so do not extend spans without checking the complete design.
Do I need a special jig for concealed hinges?
A 35 mm concealed cabinet hinge jig can assist with boring, but hinge and mounting-plate dimensions vary. Select the hardware first, follow its installation sheet, and test the pattern on scrap.
How can I keep the cabinet from tipping?
Build a rigid, square case, keep heavier media low, and use a wall restraint with fasteners suited to the wall wherever the cabinet could be climbed on, pulled, or bumped. Follow the restraint maker’s instructions.
