The wood, lighting stage and operating conditions all matter. We do not have documented in-house comparative test results for these five models, so this guide does not present another publisher’s testing as our own. Instead, it identifies the models selected by Popular Mechanics and explains what the available specifications and reviews do—and do not—establish.
What “smokeless” means in practice
A wood fire produces smoke, especially while it is starting or when combustion is inefficient. A smokeless-style pit uses airflow and secondary combustion to reduce visible smoke after the fire is established; it does not eliminate smoke under every condition. Outdoor Life describes its own test in which leaves and wet wood initially produced smoke, which then cleared as airflow and combustion improved. That page carries a 2026 title but shows an update date of April 22, 2025, so it should not be read as a newly conducted 2026 test. See Outdoor Life’s explanation.
For a backyard or patio, the practical choice is usually a trade-off among fire size, heat direction, cleanup and how often you need to move the pit. “Best” depends on those priorities, not just a low-smoke claim.
Five models highlighted by Popular Mechanics
The labels below are Popular Mechanics’ editorial picks, not results from this site’s testing. The available material does not establish directly comparable test conditions or complete specifications across all five models.

How to choose one for your space
Match the size to the gathering
Choose based on the number of people you typically seat and the space available around the pit. Solo Stove’s stated capacity ranges can help compare its Bonfire and Summit sizes, but they are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of comfortable seating. A larger pit also needs a suitable location and can be less convenient to move.
Decide whether the pit will stay put
The Breeo X24 is a substantial 62 lb unit according to Popular Mechanics, while its review lists the Bonfire 2.0 at 19.8 lb and notes that a carrying case is included. Those figures make the Bonfire the more plausible choice for occasional transport of the two, but do not establish that it is effortless to carry or that every setup is portable. For a camping choice such as the Y Series, verify the current model’s dimensions and weight rather than relying on a “camping” label.

Think through ash removal and fuel use
The Bonfire 2.0’s removable ash pan is a concrete cleanup advantage noted by Popular Mechanics. The X24 has no ash pan, so expect ash removal to involve handling the pit or its contents differently. Popular Mechanics also says the Bonfire burns through logs relatively quickly. The available evidence does not provide comparable fuel-consumption measurements across the five models.
Consider heat and cooking separately
Popular Mechanics says much of the Bonfire’s heat travels upward, while its reviewer found the X24 good at radiating heat. These observations are not a controlled, side-by-side heat comparison. Cooking performance likewise depends on the exact pit and compatible accessories: Breeo says X Series pits support its live-fire cooking accessories, and Outdoor Life notes that cooking options and heat control vary with accessory setup. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying a cooking attachment.

What the available evidence does not establish
This is not a verified five-way comparison of current prices, warranties, materials, weather resistance, surface protection or firewood capacity. The available Cuisinart details are particularly limited, and the Y Series information does not establish the complete current specifications needed to recommend it for a specific campsite. Treat maker statements about design or performance as manufacturer claims and review-based observations as findings from those publications—not independent results for this site.
For the Breeo X Series, Breeo describes 304 stainless and/or Corten steel, X Airflow, double-wall construction and secondary-combustion holes; these are product descriptions from the maker. Popular Mechanics test editor Brad Ford wrote of the X24, “One of the coolest details of the X Series 24 is its corten finish.
