Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is an evergreen tree that needs room to grow, well-drained soil and watering while it establishes. Choose a cultivar suited to your climate and available space: the species can reach about 80 feet tall and 50 feet wide, according to Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension’s profile last reviewed in March 2024. Virginia Tech’s southern magnolia profile is a useful starting point for sizing and site selection.
How much space does a southern magnolia need?
Plan for the mature tree, not the size of the nursery specimen. Virginia Tech lists the species at about 80 feet tall and 50 feet wide; individual cultivars can be smaller or have a different form. A narrow planting strip or a spot where the canopy and spreading roots will be constrained is usually a poor fit.
Surface roots may become noticeable as a tree matures, and leaves and seedpods drop. A defined planting bed can help keep that litter out of lawn-mowing paths. UF/IFAS discusses these landscape considerations in its Southern Magnolia guide.
Where should you plant it?
Light, drainage and soil
Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and good drainage. The tree can grow in sandy, loamy or clay soils, but Virginia Tech identifies acid soil as a preference and gives a pH range of 3.5 to 7.0. That is a strong general preference, not a guarantee that every local site must fit the same profile: UF/IFAS describes tolerance of slightly alkaline and occasionally wet conditions as well. Persistent poor drainage or restricted rooting space can still undermine performance.

Large leaves can be damaged by wind, so a more sheltered position is helpful where strong winds are common. Before planting, check local extension or nursery guidance for a cultivar’s climate suitability. Virginia Tech lists species hardiness as zones 7 (6b) to 9, while some cultivars are hardy in zone 6 (5b); cultivar and local conditions matter, so treat those ranges as guidance rather than a promise for every tree.
Planting and establishment
UF/IFAS recommends digging a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and nearly as deep as the root ball. Before setting the tree, cut any circling roots so they do not remain wrapped around the root mass. Set planting depth carefully rather than burying the trunk flare. For planting-season timing, follow local guidance, since climate and the type of nursery stock affect the best window.

How often should you water a newly planted southern magnolia?
Water thoroughly at planting, then keep the root area moist during establishment, especially when weather is dry. There is no dependable one-size-fits-all weekly schedule: rainfall, soil texture, drainage, temperature and how far roots have grown all change how quickly the soil dries. Check soil moisture and water when the root zone needs it rather than following a fixed calendar.
Established trees tolerate drought better when roots have room to expand into adequate soil. Young trees, trees in restricted planting areas and trees in poor, dry soil are more vulnerable. UF/IFAS notes that periodic irrigation can benefit young plants in partial shade where irrigation is limited. Its care profile provides additional regional guidance.

When and how should you prune it?
Routine pruning is generally limited; UF/IFAS describes the requirement as “little required.” Remove dead, damaged or poorly placed branches as needed, and use selective pruning if you want to lift lower branches for a more tree-like shape. Avoid heavy pruning as routine care. Espalier training is possible, but it takes ongoing attention and is not the usual low-maintenance approach.
Because the tree can become very large, make space decisions before planting instead of relying on repeated hard pruning to control it. For large limbs or work near structures, consult a qualified tree-care professional.

What problems should you watch for?
Scale insects are among the pests reported for southern magnolia by UF/IFAS, the Royal Horticultural Society and North Carolina State Extension. The RHS also lists potential diseases. Browning, leaf drop or other symptoms can have more than one cause, so identify the problem before choosing a treatment rather than assuming every symptom is an insect or disease.

How do you choose a southern magnolia cultivar?
Compare the mature height and spread, canopy shape, local hardiness, foliage and flowers against the space you actually have. Cultivars vary substantially, so confirm the label and ask a regional nursery or extension service how the selection performs locally.
- ‘Little Gem’: UF/IFAS describes this as a dwarf, upright form that can reach about 30 feet. “Dwarf” does not mean small enough for every compact yard; check its mature dimensions against the site.
- ‘Edith Bogue’: UF/IFAS identifies it as a particularly hardy selection. Verify suitability for your specific area rather than relying on the cultivar name alone.
These are examples, not universal recommendations. If you want a named cultivar’s particular growth habit or appearance, buy a correctly labeled plant: seed-grown trees may not retain the traits of the parent cultivar. UF/IFAS lists cuttings, grafting and seed as propagation options; the RHS also lists semi-ripe cuttings and layering.
