To get rid of “sugar ants,” first identify the ant, remove food and moisture that attract it, then place a suitable slow-acting bait beside an active trail and give workers time to carry it to the colony. The name “sugar ant” does not identify one species everywhere, and ants may ignore a bait they do not accept. Avoid spraying or cleaning around bait while ants are feeding; seal entry points and get local expert help if activity persists or a nest may be inside a wall.
What “sugar ant” means—and why identification matters
“Sugar ant” is a common name, not a dependable species identification. The University of Nevada, Reno Extension uses it for the odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) in its Northern Nevada guide, which describes that ant as dark brown to black and about 1/8 inch long. The guide also notes a rotten odor when one is crushed. Those details are regional identification clues, not a universal definition; other small household ants can look similar. University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s house-ant guide also describes pavement ants as another common household ant.
Identification can affect the control approach: species differ in nesting habits and bait preferences. If you are unsure, follow a trail to where ants enter, collect a few workers safely in a closed container, and ask your local Cooperative Extension office or a knowledgeable pest professional to identify them. The National Pesticide Information Center also recommends identifying ants before choosing a treatment: NPIC’s ant guidance.
Remove food and moisture before baiting
Make the area less attractive while you plan control. Clean sugary spills and crumbs, store food in sealed containers, put away pet food when it is not being eaten, and empty garbage regularly. Look for leaks or damp areas, since moisture can draw ants indoors as well as food. These steps support baiting by limiting competing food sources.

Odorous house ants can nest in warm, moist locations, including near damp wood or insulation, according to the Nevada Extension guide. That is one reason to look beyond the visible trail if activity keeps returning.
Use bait to reach the colony
Ant bait is designed to be carried back to the nest. Workers feed on an attractant mixed with a slow-acting insecticide and share it with other colony members, including queens and brood. That route takes longer than killing visible workers, but it can reach ants that are not out foraging. Iowa State Extension describes liquid and gel baits as versatile options for small household ants and notes formats including prefilled stations, bottles, tubes, and syringes: Iowa State’s ant-bait guidance.

Place bait where ants are active
- Observe an active trail or foraging spot and put bait close to it, following the product label.
- Keep bait out of reach of children and pets, away from food-preparation surfaces, and away from water, drains, or places where it could get wet.
- Let workers feed. Do not spray ants or clean with products around the active bait in a way that deters feeding or contaminates it.
- Check the placement and replenish bait only as the label and ant activity warrant.
Use the current product label for directions and precautions. Do not assume that a bait is suitable just because the pest is called a sugar ant: bait acceptance depends on the ant and can vary over time. Iowa State and NC State Extension both caution that ants may reject a bait or be deterred by cleaners and insecticides near it. See NC State’s tips for effective ant baiting.
If the ants ignore the bait
No feeding is a reason to reassess, not to keep putting out the same bait indefinitely. Try another appropriate formulation that the ants will accept, and seek identification help if activity persists. A bait that works for one ant may not work for another; neither the common name nor a product format guarantees acceptance.

Allow time, then clean trails and close entry points
Baiting is not an instant knockdown. University of Nevada, Reno Extension says control using baits can take days to weeks; that is guidance, not a promised result. NC State Extension advises leaving bait in place for 3–4 days after you see no more signs of feeding, unless the product label says otherwise.
When bait is no longer being actively visited, remove visible trail cues by vacuuming or washing the trail with soap and water. UC IPM recommends soapy water for visible invaders and notes that indoor spraying will not prevent more ants from entering. Coordinate cleanup with bait use: avoid washing or spraying around an active placement because it can discourage feeding.

For longer-term prevention, seal suitable cracks and openings with caulk, reduce dampness, and prune plants or branches that touch the house where practical. These measures can reduce routes into the structure, but they do not replace baiting when ants are already foraging indoors. Contact local Extension or a knowledgeable pest professional when you cannot identify the ant, bait is not being accepted, or activity persists despite sanitation, baiting, and exclusion. A concealed nest in an indoor wall void or another inaccessible site may need a targeted treatment; UC IPM advises consulting a professional pest-control operator for indoor nest sites. Appropriate treatment depends on the infestation and local requirements.
