Good Housekeeping’s Kitchen & Cooking Lab says it tested nine electric can openers, using 6-ounce tomato paste, 15-ounce beans, and 32-ounce tomatoes in its cutting tests. Its 2026 picks were Cuisinart SC0-60 Deluxe as best overall, Proctor Silex Smooth Edge Cordless as best value, Kitchen Mama Orbit One as best handheld, and Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch as best for smooth edges. Other reviews do not produce one universal winner. Shop TODAY’s January 2026 test gave its tested Proctor Silex rechargeable model and Cuisinart Deluxe an overall average of 4.5/5, with different strengths and weaknesses. Prudent Reviews, updated in November 2025, named Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch its best electric choice, while reporting it was the loudest electric model in that comparison at 83 decibels. Its Cuisinart Deluxe also averaged 4.5/5, with strong performance and noise scores but a lower ease-of-use score; the testers noted some mess and a more jagged cut than the Proctor Silex. Choose countertop or handheld for how you use it
Countertop openers usually trade more counter or cupboard space for a stable base and the ability to handle heavier cans; they may also open cans faster. Handheld models are easier to put away, but may take longer and need charging. These are general design tendencies, not a guarantee about every model. - Choose countertop if you open cans frequently, want the opener to stand ready, or routinely handle tall or heavy cans.
- Choose handheld if drawer space matters more than speed, or you want a compact unit that can be stored between uses. Check charging method and whether it is ready when needed.
Understand top-cut and side-cut lids
A top-cut blade pierces the lid from above and contacts the food. The cut lid can have a sharp edge. A side-cut design cuts under the rim, generally avoids contact with the food, and tends to leave smoother edges; the trade-off is that draining may be less convenient. What to check before choosing
- Can-size range: Look beyond a standard can. A small can tests whether the opener can follow a tight radius; a medium can reflects routine use; a tall, heavy can tests grip and stability. Good Housekeeping’s cited cutting test included 6-, 15-, and 32-ounce cans.
- Completion and alignment: Check whether the opener tracks around the rim without slipping or stopping partway, and whether the lid is easy to remove.
- Control: One-button operation, hands-free travel, and automatic shutoff are not universal. Some models require ongoing lever pressure and attention to the sound of the cut.
- Cleanup and food contact: Consider splatter, crumbs or metal fragments, lid handling, and whether the blade area is easy to clean. A side-cut mechanism generally avoids food contact, but can make draining awkward.
- Noise and stability: A quick opening is not the only measure of convenience. Consider sound level and whether the base stays planted while cutting.
- Power and storage: Confirm whether the model is corded, battery-powered, or rechargeable, and whether its footprint suits the counter or drawer where it will live.
- Durability evidence: Short-term opening tests and drop tests are not proof of long-term reliability. TechGearLab says its cutting assessment used at least ten cans per opener and that it drop-tested handheld models from 40 inches; those are that site’s procedures, not an industry standard or a lifespan measure. How much confidence to place in a “best” label
A best-of label is specific to a reviewer’s test setup and priorities. Prudent Reviews says its comparison opened more than 70 cans across two testers, but it also reports a small-can difficulty for one tester with Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch. The contrasting accounts are a reminder to match a recommendation to your own can sizes and tolerance for noise, manual control, or cleanup rather than treating any single ranking as a universal result.
