Look at the recess in the screw—not just the shape of its head—to choose a driver. Match the recess to the driver family, then pick a size that seats securely without wobbling or overhanging. That fit helps reduce slipping and damage.
Head shape and drive type are different
A screw’s outer head profile describes how its head sits or looks. Terms such as countersunk, pan and button refer to that profile; slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, hex and square describe the recess that engages with a driver. A countersunk screw, for example, can have different drive types. Identify the recess before choosing a tool. Screwfix’s screw guide describes common head profiles and drive families.
Identify the recess and its driver
Use this visual guide to narrow down the drive family. A cross-shaped recess needs closer inspection because it may be Phillips or Pozidriv.
| What you see | Likely drive | Matching driver |
|---|---|---|
| One straight groove across the head | Slotted | Flat-blade (slotted) driver sized to the slot |
| A cross-shaped recess with no extra marks | Likely Phillips (PH) | Phillips driver; confirm the fit before turning |
| A cross with four short radial lines or notches between its arms | Pozidriv (PZ) | Pozidriv driver of the matching size |
| A six-lobed star | Torx, often marked T or TX | Matching Torx bit |
| A six-sided recess | Hexagonal, often called internal hex or Allen | Matching hex bit or hex key |
| A square recess | Square drive, also called Robertson | Matching square driver |
The shape cues and Phillips/Pozidriv distinction are also shown in MSC’s screwdriver guide and Lowe’s guide to screwdriver heads.

Check whether a cross is Phillips or Pozidriv
Both drives have a cross-shaped recess, but Pozidriv has four additional short marks between the cross arms. Look for those marks rather than assuming every cross is Phillips. MSC notes that Phillips and Pozidriv are not compatible: substituting one for the other can damage the screw or the tool.
Choose a size that fits the fastener
- Inspect the recess. Clear away dirt or debris so its shape and edges are visible.
- Match the drive family. Use a Phillips bit for Phillips, Pozidriv for Pozidriv, and the corresponding driver or bit for the other shapes.
- Try the tip without turning. It should seat securely, with no obvious looseness or overhang. If it rocks or sits poorly, try another size or family.
- Use a sound bit. Avoid worn or damaged tips; the National Engineering Fasteners machine-screw guide recommends using a bit in good condition.
- Check the fastener or device instructions. Use the specified drive and size when they are given, especially for specialty or precision fasteners.
PH and PZ numbers and Torx T numbers identify sizes within their respective families, but there is no universal screw-head-to-bit-size mapping established by the cited guides. Fit the actual fastener rather than relying on the outer head profile or a presumed size.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Choose a screwdriver or set for the job
When comparing tools, prioritize coverage that matches the fasteners you actually have:
- Drive coverage: Check whether the tool or set includes the families you need, such as slotted, PH, PZ, Torx, hex or square.
- Size coverage: Confirm the needed size is included; a set’s range does not guarantee it fits every screw.
- Access and scale: Standard drivers suit general work, precision drivers suit small screws, and stubby or offset drivers can help where access is restricted. See Screwfix’s guide to screwdriver types for common and specialty applications.
- Tip condition: A clean, unworn tip that fits correctly matters more than having a large assortment that does not match the fastener.
A multi-bit screwdriver or bit set can provide a practical range of drives and sizes for construction and repair work. For small electronics or watch hardware, a precision set may be more suitable. In either case, verify the drive and size against the screw before applying force.
