How do I choose the right type of clothes dryer?
Start with the installation your home can support, then compare capacity, drying performance, fabric care, efficiency, controls, and ownership cost. A gas dryer needs an appropriate gas connection and electrical service; an electric dryer needs the correct circuit. Vented dryers need a safe route to exhaust outdoors. A ventless heat-pump dryer avoids exterior exhaust but still needs a way to handle condensed water.
Good Housekeeping says its dryer lab evaluates drying performance, fabric care, ease of use, capacity, and helpful features. Those are useful comparison dimensions, but a model that scores well overall may still be wrong for a tight laundry alcove, a household without a vent route, or a washer that produces loads too large for its drum.

What size dryer do I need?
Match the drum to the loads you actually wash and to your washer. ENERGY STAR advises choosing capacity according to household laundry volume and leaving enough room for a full load to tumble freely. Do I need a vented dryer?
A conventional vented dryer sends moist air outside through an exhaust duct. That means the home needs a suitable vent route and the installation must match the appliance’s venting requirements. A heat-pump dryer recirculates heated air in a closed loop and condenses moisture instead of exhausting it outdoors, which can make it an option where an exterior vent is impractical.
Ventless does not mean maintenance-free or water-free: the condensed moisture must drain or be emptied from a tank. Check whether the specific model supports a drain connection, what accessories or clearances it requires, and whether your laundry area can accommodate its installation.

Is a heat-pump dryer worth the higher upfront cost?
ENERGY STAR says certified heat-pump dryers use around 70% less energy than conventional dryers. That is a comparison for the certified heat-pump category, not a promise of a particular bill reduction or payback period for an individual household. Whether the higher purchase cost makes sense depends on how often you dry clothes, local electricity prices, the model’s efficiency, and any available local rebate.
For efficiency comparisons, ENERGY STAR identifies Combined Energy Factor (CEF) as the dryer efficiency metric: a higher CEF indicates greater efficiency. Compare the exact model’s current record rather than relying on a category average. ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient dryer dataset was last updated September 28, 2026; it includes, for example, Beko HPD24414W3 and Blomberg DHP24404W3 at 4.5 cu. ft., CEF 11.0, and estimated annual energy use of 217 kWh/year. Verify the individual model record and availability before treating those figures as current specifications for a purchase.

ENERGY STAR also estimates about $210 in energy bills over the product’s life for a full-size ENERGY STAR-certified electric dryer. That is the agency’s estimate, not a guaranteed saving for every household. Its broader statement that more than $1.5 billion in annual utility costs could be saved if all dryers sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified is a program-wide hypothetical, not an individual savings estimate. ENERGY STAR says about 80% of American homes have a clothes dryer; the page does not state a publication year for those figures.

Automatic termination or moisture sensing detects when clothes are dry and can reduce over-drying. ENERGY STAR also identifies lower-heat settings, delayed start, and steam cycles as features found on certified products; certification does not mean every model includes all of them. Choose features for the fabrics and routines you actually have, and check that the controls are understandable to everyone using the machine.

ENERGY STAR advises cleaning the lint filter after every load and periodically scrubbing it if dryer sheets leave residue. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions as well; cleaning the lint filter does not replace proper care of the exhaust duct on a vented dryer.
What should I verify before buying?
- Confirm the exact model. Get the full model number and check the current manufacturer specification sheet; names and configurations can change.
- Check fit and installation. Measure the appliance space and route from delivery entrance to laundry area. Verify required clearances, stacking compatibility, and whether the dryer is vented or ventless.
- Match household services. Confirm the required gas connection or electrical supply, plus the vent route or condensate drain/tank arrangement.
- Compare capacity and efficiency. Match drum capacity to washer loads and compare current CEF records where available. Consider how often you run the dryer and your local energy cost.
- Review ownership terms. Check the warranty, local price, installation costs, and whether a rebate applies to your location and model. ENERGY STAR’s rebate finder can help identify programs, but availability and eligibility vary.
NEEA’s 2026 evaluation assessed 12 top-selling electric dryers across non-qualified, ENERGY STAR-qualified, and heat-pump groups. It used DOE Appendix D2 and additional load conditions informed by NEEA’s 2023 laundry field study. That is useful context for understanding that dryer performance can be evaluated under defined test conditions, but it does not supply a nine-model household ranking.
