How to Choose the Right Range Hood for a Better Kitchen Upgrade

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best range hood for a kitchen upgrade is the hood that actually captures smoke, grease, heat, moisture, and cooking pollutants before they spread through the house. That means the right choice is not always the highest-CFM model or the most expensive stainless hood. On our job sites, the best result usually comes from matching the hood to five things: the range or cooktop, the cabinet layout, the duct route, the homeowner’s cooking habits, and the local code requirements.

For a typical US kitchen in 2026, a straightforward range hood replacement often lands around $300 to $850 installed. A new ducted installation usually falls around $650 to $2,500, depending on ductwork, electrical, cabinetry, wall or roof penetrations, and finish work. Custom hoods, island installations, pro-style ranges, long duct runs, makeup air, and roof work can push the project higher.

If you want the quick answer: choose a ducted under-cabinet or wall-mount hood in the 300 to 400 CFM range for most standard family kitchens. Choose a wider, deeper ducted hood for island cooktops, frequent frying, or high-output gas cooking. Use a ductless hood only when exterior venting is not practical, such as in some apartments, condos, or tight remodel conditions.

What Makes a Range Hood Good

A good range hood does three things well. It captures the plume coming off the cooking surface, moves enough air to exhaust it, and stays quiet enough that people actually turn it on. Many product listings focus on advertised CFM, finish, and price. Those matter, but they do not tell the whole story.

Capture geometry is the first issue. Heat, steam, and smoke rise in a widening plume. A shallow hood over front burners may miss a lot of that plume, even if the motor is powerful. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory testing has shown residential hood capture efficiency ranging from under 15% to over 98%, depending on the hood, burner position, airflow, and installation. Back burners are usually easier for a hood to capture than front burners because they sit closer to the wall and deeper under the hood body.

That is why we look at hood width, depth, mounting height, and blower performance together. A quiet 350 CFM hood with good coverage over a standard 30-inch range can outperform a louder, shallow hood that claims more airflow but lets smoke roll past the front edge.

Best Range Hood Types by Kitchen Layout

Under-Cabinet Range Hoods

Under-cabinet hoods are the best fit for many standard kitchens because they mount below an upper cabinet directly above the range. They work well with 30-inch and 36-inch ranges, are widely available, and can often use existing ductwork.

For a standard 30-inch electric or gas range, look for a 30-inch under-cabinet hood with about 300 to 400 CFM if it can be ducted outdoors. Basic ductless models can cost $60 to $150 for the unit only. Common ducted or convertible models often run $150 to $650. Better stainless, low-noise, high-CFM, or self-cleaning models often run $600 to $1,600.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: standard family kitchens with upper cabinets over the range.

Watch-outs: cabinet height, duct alignment, existing outlet location, and whether the current cabinet can support the hood.

Wall-Mount Chimney Hoods

A wall-mount chimney hood is usually the right choice when the range sits on an open wall without upper cabinets. The exposed chimney covers the duct and creates a cleaner focal point. These hoods can be very effective when sized correctly because they often have better depth than basic under-cabinet models.

Expect common wall-mount models to start in the $250 to $700 range, with better units often running $700 to $1,500 before labor. Installation can be simple if the duct exits straight through an exterior wall. It becomes more involved if the duct has to run up through a ceiling, attic, roof, or soffit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: remodels where upper cabinets are removed, open-wall range locations, and kitchens where the hood is part of the design.

Watch-outs: wall blocking, ceiling height, chimney extension kits, backsplash coordination, and duct concealment.

Island Range Hoods

Island hoods need more capture area because air can move around the cooktop from every side. There is no back wall to help contain the plume. For that reason, an island hood often needs to be wider and deeper than the cooking surface. A 36-inch island cooktop may justify a 42-inch hood if the room and design allow it.

Island hood units commonly start around $867 and go up from there. Installed cost can climb quickly because the duct often has to run through the ceiling, floor framing, attic, or roof. Ceiling structure, joist direction, lighting, and roof flashing can all affect the final number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: island cooktops where sightlines matter but real ventilation is still required.

Watch-outs: ceiling mounting, duct route, finished ceiling repair, lighting conflicts, and higher noise exposure in open plans.

Range Hood Inserts and Custom Covers

Inserts are the right product when the kitchen design calls for a custom wood, plaster, tile, stone, or metal hood surround. The insert is the working ventilation appliance. The surround is the finish feature. This approach is common in higher-end remodels because it lets the hood match the cabinetry or architectural style.

Quality inserts and liners commonly run $500 to $2,000 or more. The full installed cost depends heavily on carpentry, finish material, ducting, and whether the hood enclosure needs fire-safe clearances or access panels for service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use: custom kitchens where the hood is integrated into millwork or a built surround.

Watch-outs: access for cleaning and repair, liner sizing, cabinetmaker coordination, duct size, and manufacturer clearances.

Downdraft Ventilation

Downdraft systems can preserve sightlines, especially at islands, but they work against the natural direction of heat and smoke. Since cooking emissions rise, a downdraft has to pull them sideways or downward. That can be acceptable for light cooking, but it is not our first recommendation for frequent frying, high-output gas burners, griddles, or wok cooking.

Best use: design-sensitive spaces where an overhead hood is not possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: weaker capture, complicated duct routes through cabinets or floors, and reduced cabinet storage.

Range Hood Comparison Table

Range hood type Best for Typical unit cost in 2026 Typical installed cost Key caution
Basic ductless under-cabinet Apartments, condos, light cooking $60-$150 $300-$850 if replacing similar hood Does not exhaust heat, moisture, or combustion byproducts outdoors
Ducted under-cabinet Standard 30-inch or 36-inch ranges $150-$650 common; $600-$1,600 upgraded $300-$850 replacement; $650-$2,100+ new ducted Existing duct size and route may limit performance
Wall-mount chimney Open wall range layouts $250-$1,500+ $650-$2,500+ depending on duct and wall work Needs clean wall blocking and duct concealment
Island hood Island cooktops and open kitchens About $867 and up $1,500-$4,000+ in many remodels Needs more capture area and ceiling duct planning
Insert or liner Custom wood, plaster, tile, or stone hoods $500-$2,000+ $2,000-$7,500+ with finish work Carpentry and service access must be planned early
Pro-style high-CFM hood High-BTU gas, frequent frying, griddling, wok cooking $1,100-$3,000+ $2,500-$8,000+ if makeup air is needed Over 400 CFM can trigger makeup-air requirements

How Much CFM Do You Really Need?

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It tells you how much air the hood is rated to move. More CFM can help, but only when the rest of the system can support it. A large blower connected to undersized ductwork, too many elbows, or a restrictive roof cap can be loud and underperforming.

ASHRAE 62.2-2022 references 100 CFM demand-controlled airflow for vented range hoods and 300 CFM or 5 air changes per hour for other kitchen exhaust fans. In real kitchen upgrades, many useful residential hoods fall in the 300 to 600 CFM range. A light-cooking apartment may be acceptable with a lower-CFM ductless or convertible hood. A standard family kitchen usually does well with a 300 to 400 CFM ducted hood. Frequent frying, island cooking, or pro-style gas equipment may call for 600 CFM or more, but that should be designed as a system.

Do not treat 400 CFM as a magic target. Treat it as a planning checkpoint. Under the 2024 International Residential Code, Section M1503.6, domestic cooking exhaust systems capable of more than 400 CFM require makeup air, provided mechanically or passively, with damper requirements. Many local jurisdictions use the IRC or amended versions of it, so this threshold can turn a simple appliance swap into a mechanical scope item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean every homeowner should stay below 400 CFM. It means the choice should be deliberate. If the cooking load needs a larger hood, design the makeup air properly instead of undersizing the hood to avoid the conversation.

Ducted vs Ductless Range Hoods

A ducted hood exhausts air outdoors. For serious cooking, gas ranges, frequent frying, griddling, wok cooking, and high-BTU appliances, this is the performance default. It removes grease-laden air, odors, heat, moisture, and combustion byproducts from the house.

A ductless or recirculating hood pulls air through grease and charcoal filters, then sends it back into the room. It can reduce grease and some odors, but it does not remove moisture, heat, nitrogen dioxide, or other combustion byproducts outdoors. That is why ductless hoods are a compromise, not a true equivalent to exterior exhaust.

Ductless may still be the right practical choice in a condo, apartment, masonry building, or remodel where there is no reasonable duct path. In that case, buy a model with accessible filters, budget for regular charcoal filter replacement, and use back burners when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duct Design Matters More Than Most Buyers Think

The installed duct system can make or break the hood. On remodels, we start by finding the shortest, straightest route to the exterior. A direct wall exit is often cleaner and less expensive than a long run through an attic or roof. Every elbow, reducer, transition, and restrictive cap adds resistance. That lowers delivered CFM and increases sound.

Use the largest duct size approved by the hood manufacturer. Many residential hoods call for 6-inch round, 7-inch round, 8-inch round, or rectangular duct. Do not squeeze a high-CFM hood into an old 3-1/4 by 10-inch duct without checking the manufacturer’s requirements. The hood may fit physically and still perform poorly.

Exterior termination also matters. The duct should exhaust outdoors, not into an attic, crawlspace, garage, soffit cavity, or wall cavity. It needs a proper exterior cap, backdraft damper, weather protection, and clearance from openings as required by local code and manufacturer instructions. For roof penetrations, flashing quality is just as important as appliance selection. A $900 hood is not an upgrade if the roof leaks six months later.

Noise: Buy the Hood You Will Actually Use

Noise is usually listed in sones. Lower is quieter. A hood around 1 to 3 sones on low speed is comfortable for many homes. At high speed, many hoods get noticeably loud, especially island hoods in open rooms. The mistake is buying a hood that only works well at a speed the homeowner cannot stand to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a hood with multiple speeds and strong performance at the middle setting, not just a high maximum CFM number. Remote or inline blowers can reduce kitchen noise on some higher-end projects, but they add cost and planning. For most homeowners, the practical target is a hood that can run quietly during simmering and at a tolerable sound level during searing or frying.

Best Range Hood Recommendations by Use Case

Best Overall for Most Kitchens: 300-400 CFM Ducted Under-Cabinet Hood

For a standard 30-inch range with cabinets above, this is usually the most balanced upgrade. It fits common layouts, controls cost, and can provide meaningful ventilation if ducted correctly. Choose stainless steel or a finish that matches the appliance package, dishwasher-safe baffle or mesh filters, LED lighting, and a fan rating that is quiet enough for daily use.

Best Budget Choice: Convertible Under-Cabinet Hood

A convertible hood can be installed ducted or ductless. This gives flexibility when the remodel plan is uncertain. For budget projects, expect the unit to start around $100 to $300, with better options costing more. If you use it in ductless mode, understand the limits and keep up with charcoal filter replacement.

Best for Open-Wall Remodels: Wall-Mount Chimney Hood

When upper cabinets are removed, a wall-mount chimney hood gives the range wall a finished look and can ventilate well. We like these when the duct can run straight up or straight out without awkward transitions. Measure ceiling height before ordering because chimney kits often have minimum and maximum extension ranges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for Islands: Oversized Ducted Island Hood

For an island cooktop, choose more capture area than you would on a wall. A hood 6 inches wider than the cooking surface is often worth considering. Keep the mounting height within the manufacturer’s range. Too high, and the hood misses the plume. Too low, and it blocks sightlines and feels intrusive.

Best for Custom Kitchens: Insert with Proper Liner

If the design calls for a built hood, select the insert before finalizing the cabinet shop drawings. The insert dimensions, liner, duct collar, blower location, access panels, and clearances all affect the enclosure. This is where early coordination saves money. Changing a custom hood surround after tile or millwork is installed is expensive.

Best for Pro-Style Cooking: Engineered High-CFM Hood

For pro-style ranges, high-BTU burners, griddles, and frequent wok cooking, plan the hood as part of the mechanical system. This may mean 600 CFM, 900 CFM, or more, but the exact number depends on the appliance, hood size, ducting, and local code. Once the hood is capable of more than 400 CFM, makeup air must be reviewed. That can involve a damper, dedicated intake, tempering strategy, and HVAC coordination.

Installation Costs and What Drives Them

The appliance price is only part of the project. A homeowner may compare a $300 hood with a $1,500 hood, but the real budget difference often comes from ductwork, roof penetration, electrical changes, cabinet modification, and permitting.

For 2026 planning, use these benchmarks. A like-for-like replacement with existing ducting is commonly $300 to $850 installed. A new installation with outlet and ductwork often runs $650 to $2,100, while broader cost guides show $650 to $2,500 with an average near $1,750. Homewyse’s May 2026 basic range is about $564 to $1,030 per hood before site-specific upgrades.

The biggest cost drivers are hood type, width, CFM, sound rating, ducted versus ductless operation, whether usable ductwork already exists, route length, number of elbows, duct diameter, wall versus roof termination, cabinet or soffit changes, roof and flashing work, electrical outlet or hardwire changes, makeup-air equipment, permit fees, and local labor rates.

A half-day replacement can become a multi-trade project if the new hood is wider, heavier, higher-CFM, or moved to a new location. That is normal construction reality, not a bad product choice. The key is identifying the scope before ordering the appliance.

Permits, Safety, and Code Issues

Permit requirements vary by city and county. Some jurisdictions treat a simple appliance replacement differently from new ductwork, new electrical, roof penetration, or makeup-air work. Cities such as San Jose, Philadelphia, St. Louis County, and many others publish mechanical permit guidance for appliance or ventilation work, but the exact trigger depends on local rules.

From a safety standpoint, the big items are clearances, electrical connections, duct termination, grease management, and makeup air. Follow the range and hood manufacturers’ installation instructions. Do not terminate kitchen exhaust into an attic or enclosed space. Do not use plastic duct. Do not ignore a missing damper. Do not bury connections where they cannot be serviced.

Gas cooking deserves extra attention. The EPA recommends using an outdoor-vented range hood whenever cooking, keeping it running 10 to 20 minutes afterward, using back burners when possible, and cleaning grease filters routinely. Those are simple habits, but they make the appliance much more effective.

When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro

A careful homeowner can often DIY a like-for-like hood replacement when the existing duct, electrical, cabinet opening, mounting height, and hood size all match. That means the same width, similar weight, compatible duct location, and no new wiring or exterior penetration. Even then, two people make the job safer because hoods are awkward overhead appliances.

Hire a pro when the project involves new ductwork, cutting an exterior wall, cutting or flashing a roof, moving electrical, installing a heavier chimney or island hood, modifying cabinets, working with gas appliance clearances, or selecting a hood over 400 CFM. Also hire help if the existing installation vents into an attic or soffit cavity; that should be corrected, not repeated.

On our projects, we prefer to verify the duct path before the hood is purchased. That can mean opening a cabinet, checking attic access, measuring joist direction, confirming roof slope, and reviewing manufacturer duct tables. It is less exciting than picking the finish, but it prevents expensive returns and change orders.

Final Buying Checklist

Before ordering a range hood, confirm the cooking appliance width, hood width, mounting height, duct size, duct route, CFM, sound rating, electrical requirements, filter type, exterior termination, and whether makeup air is triggered. For a 30-inch range, a 30-inch hood may be fine on a wall. For a 36-inch range, island cooktop, or heavy cooking, consider going wider and deeper if the layout allows.

Choose ducted ventilation whenever practical. Keep the duct short and straight. Use back burners when you can. Clean the grease filters. Pick a sound level your household will tolerate. If the hood is part of a larger remodel, select it before cabinets, tile, and mechanical rough-in are finalized.

The best range hood upgrade is the one that disappears into daily life because it works. It clears the air, protects finishes, reduces lingering odors, and supports the way the kitchen is actually used. When the appliance, ductwork, cabinetry, and code requirements are planned together, the hood becomes more than a design feature. It becomes a practical part of a healthier, better-built kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CFM range hood is best for most kitchens?

Most standard family kitchens do well with a ducted 300 to 400 CFM range hood, assuming the hood has good coverage and the ductwork is properly sized. Larger or pro-style cooking appliances may need more airflow plus makeup-air planning.

Is a ductless range hood worth buying?

A ductless hood is worth considering when exterior ducting is not practical, such as in some condos or apartments. It can capture grease and reduce some odors, but it does not exhaust heat, moisture, or combustion byproducts outdoors.

How much does range hood installation cost in 2026?

A like-for-like replacement commonly costs $300 to $850 installed. A new ducted installation often runs $650 to $2,500, with custom hoods, roof penetrations, electrical work, cabinetry changes, and makeup air increasing the cost.

Do I need makeup air for a range hood?

Under the 2024 IRC, domestic cooking exhaust systems capable of more than 400 CFM require makeup air. Local amendments vary, so this should be checked before installing a high-CFM hood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install a range hood myself?

A homeowner may be able to replace a same-size hood using existing ducting and electrical. Hire a professional for new ductwork, roof or wall penetrations, electrical changes, island hoods, heavy custom hoods, or any hood over 400 CFM.
