Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the specific products Consumer Reports tested, its best-performing dishwasher detergent packs cleaned better than its best gels. That does not mean every tablet beats every gel, and the current evidence does not establish where powder ranks: Consumer Reports says it no longer tests powder. Choose by the performance of the specific product, the cost and dose you need, and your dishwasher manufacturer’s instructions.
What the test evidence says
Consumer Reports’ comparison favors its top-performing single-dose packs over its top-performing gels for cleaning power. It also reports considerable variation among individual detergents, so format alone is not a reliable predictor of results. The comparison is about the tested products, not a guarantee that any pack will outperform any gel. Consumer Reports’ detergent test coverage and its buying guide explain the limits and trade-offs.
Why packs may do well
Single-dose packs are premeasured and may combine ingredients such as pretreatment solution, degreaser, bleach, enzymes, and rinse aid. These combinations may help explain differences, but they do not prove that one ingredient is responsible for a product’s test result. Larry Ciufo, the Consumer Reports engineer overseeing its dishwasher-detergent testing, says, “Generally, enzymes do help,” while cautioning, “But it’s too complicated to pin it on one ingredient.”
What is not established about powder
Consumer Reports says it stopped including powder in its latest ratings because availability and market share declined. The current tests therefore do not provide a powder-versus-pack-versus-gel ranking. Older rankings should not be treated as proof of powder’s current standing.

How the formats compare
| Format | What is established | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets, pods, or packs | Consumer Reports’ best-performing tested single-dose products cleaned better than its best tested gels. | Premeasured and convenient, but typically cost more per load in Consumer Reports’ buying guide. One fixed dose gives less control for small or lightly soiled loads. |
| Gel or liquid | Consumer Reports identifies gels as generally lower-cost per load than top-rated packs. Bosch warns that liquid detergents can reduce cleaning performance, especially on bleachable stains such as tea and coffee. | Do not infer that every gel performs worse than every pack. Bosch’s warning is manufacturer guidance, not a test of every brand. |
| Powder | A dishwasher detergent format that can be measured by the user; Consumer Reports does not include it in its latest ratings. | Dose adjustment may be useful, but current comparative cleaning rank against packs and gels is not established by the cited tests. |
Which detergent should you choose?
If cleaning performance is your priority
Start with a well-rated specific product rather than choosing by format name alone. The clearest comparative result in the cited testing is that Consumer Reports’ best-performing packs beat its best gels; it does not extend that conclusion to every product, nor does it provide a current powder comparison.
If cost per load or dose control matters more
Compare the actual price per load for the products available to you. Consumer Reports’ testing article reported a range of 7 cents to about 60 cents per load, while its separate buying guide gave a range of 12 to 57 cents per load for packs in that guide’s ratings. These are different source snapshots, not current shelf-price guarantees; prices and rated products can change. Gels and powders may offer lower costs or more flexibility in how much detergent you use, but a lower price does not by itself establish better value if cleaning results differ.

If convenience matters
Packs remove measuring and combine a set dose into one unit. Gel and powder require measuring, which takes an extra step but can give you greater control over the amount used. Consider whether a fixed dose suits the size and soil level of your usual loads.
Check your dishwasher and water conditions
Follow the detergent, dispenser, cycle, and rinse-aid guidance in the manual for your specific dishwasher. Bosch’s U.S. dishwasher guidance states that “liquid detergents often decrease the cleaning performance, especially with regard to the bleaching of stains such as tea or coffee.” That is Bosch’s manufacturer advice, not a universal result for every machine or liquid product. Consumer NZ also advises following applicable appliance or system guidance in relevant situations.

- Cleans 24-hour stuck on food.
- Cleans baked on food.
- Powers away residues
- Powers away tea stains
- Safe to use on all dishwasher-safe dishes
Use only detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers. Hand dishwashing liquid is not a substitute: it can create excessive suds in a machine. Water conditions and the chosen cycle also affect results, so a format that works well in one household may not perform the same way in another.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 comparison suggests powder for readers seeking less environmental impact, but the cited material does not quantify or independently establish a full-life-cycle environmental ranking across all three formats. Treat that suggestion as a starting point, not proof that powder has the lowest overall impact.
