If you want the short answer, the best detergent for most LG dishwashers is a premium enzyme-based pod or tablet, specifically a product in the same performance class as Cascade Platinum Plus or Finish Quantum, placed in the LG detergent dispenser and used with separate liquid rinse aid. That combination gives most homeowners the best balance of cleaning power, spotting control, dosing consistency, and convenience.
That said, detergent is only one part of the system. On our kitchen remodel and appliance replacement jobs, we see plenty of dishwashers blamed for poor cleaning when the real cause is hard water, an empty rinse-aid reservoir, a dirty filter, blocked spray arms, low incoming water temperature, overloaded racks, or a drain hose installed without the right high loop or air gap. A $0.40 pod cannot overcome bad water chemistry or a clogged filter.
This guide breaks down what to use in an LG dishwasher, when pods beat powder or gel, how much you should expect to spend in 2026, and how to troubleshoot white film, cloudy glasses, greasy plates, and poor drying before replacing an otherwise good machine.
Best Overall Detergent for Most LG Dishwashers
For a typical LG dishwasher in a typical U.S. kitchen, start with a premium dishwasher pod or tablet and keep the rinse-aid reservoir filled. The best default choices are Cascade Platinum Plus or Finish Quantum style pods or tablets. These products are pre-measured, enzyme-based, and built to handle mixed loads with grease, starch, coffee residue, egg, sauces, and normal food soil.
Pods are not magic, but they solve two common homeowner problems: underdosing in hard water and overdosing in soft water. Because each pod is measured, you get a consistent amount of detergent every load. That matters in LG dishwashers because the detergent dispenser is timed to release detergent during the main wash. If you throw a pod loose in the tub or silverware basket, it can dissolve too early and get flushed away before it does its real work.

In 2026 retail pricing, premium pods usually run about $0.24 to $0.60 per load. A large Finish Quantum 84-count package has been commonly available around $19.99, or about $0.24 per tab. Cascade Platinum Plus in a 62-count package has been seen around $24.94, or about $0.40 per pod, with some marketplace listings priced higher. For most households, that means detergent cost is roughly $7 to $18 per month if you run one load per day.
Our practical recommendation is simple: if you want one detergent to buy without turning dishwashing into a chemistry project, use a premium pod on Auto, Normal, or Heavy, keep rinse aid full, scrape dishes instead of prewashing them, and clean the filter regularly.
Pods vs Powder vs Gel in an LG Dishwasher
LG dishwashers can perform well with pods, powder, or gel as long as the detergent is made for automatic dishwashers. Do not use hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or laundry pods. Those products can create excessive suds, leaks, residue, and service problems. Dishwasher detergent is a different product with different chemistry.

The right format depends on your water, cycle habits, and budget. Pods are the easiest and strongest all-around option. Powder gives the best dosing control and can be the better value. Gel is inexpensive and dissolves quickly, but it is usually weaker on baked-on food and mineral film.
| Detergent Type | Best Use | Typical 2026 Cost Per Load | LG Dishwasher Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium pods or tablets | Most households, greasy loads, hard-water homes, Auto/Normal/Heavy cycles | $0.24-$0.60 | Best default. Place in the dispenser, not loose in the tub. |
| Budget or private-label pods | Everyday lightly soiled loads where cost matters | $0.18-$0.35 | Can work well, but may struggle more with hard water or baked-on soil. |
| Eco/free-and-clear pods | Fragrance-sensitive homes and lower-dye preferences | $0.30-$0.65 | Good fit when scent is the priority; performance varies by water hardness. |
| Powder detergent | Soft water, adjustable dosing, budget control | $0.05-$0.18 | Useful when you need less detergent or want to add prewash detergent. |
| Gel detergent | Short cycles, light soil, quick-dissolving needs | $0.08-$0.20 | Convenient but often weaker on cooked-on food and hard-water film. |
When pods are the best choice
Use pods if you run full loads, use Auto or Normal cycles, have average-to-hard water, or simply want reliable results without measuring. Premium pods usually include enzymes for proteins and starches, cleaning agents for grease, and additives that help fight mineral spotting.
They are especially useful for families that load a dishwasher with breakfast bowls, coffee mugs, lunch containers, dinner plates, and cookware all in one run. That mixed soil is where a better pod earns its higher cost.
When powder is the better choice
Powder is worth considering if your water is very soft, your glassware is starting to look etched, or you want tighter control over dosing. In soft water, too much detergent can leave residue and can contribute to permanent glass etching over time, especially when combined with high heat.
Powder also lets you use a small amount in the prewash cup if your LG model has one and the manual supports it. That can help on heavy food soil without overloading the main wash. The savings are real: at $0.05 to $0.18 per load, powder can cost less than half of many premium pods.
When gel makes sense
Gel is not our first pick for tough loads, but it has a place. It dissolves quickly, so it can work better than some pods on short or Express cycles. If you mostly wash lightly soiled plates, cups, and utensils, gel may be acceptable and inexpensive. For baked-on lasagna, dried oatmeal, egg, or greasy pans, move up to a premium pod or powder and use a longer cycle.
Rinse Aid Is Not Optional If You Want Dry, Spot-Free Dishes
LG recommends rinse aid for better drying and fewer water spots, and in the field we treat rinse aid as part of the detergent system. Even if your pod says it includes rinse aid, fill the separate LG rinse-aid dispenser. The built-in reservoir meters rinse aid at the correct part of the cycle, which is different from detergent release.

Modern dishwashers use less water and less energy than older machines, and rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes instead of clinging in droplets. Plastic containers may still hold water because plastic does not retain heat as well as glass, ceramic, or metal.
Hard Water Changes the Detergent Decision
Hard water is one of the biggest reasons an LG dishwasher leaves white film, cloudy glasses, chalky residue, or dull-looking stainless flatware. The detergent may be fine, but minerals in the water are interfering with the wash and drying process.
For hard water, use a premium pod or tablet, keep rinse aid full, and raise the rinse-aid setting if spots continue. Clean the dishwasher periodically with citric acid or a dishwasher cleaner. LG gives a citric-acid cleaning method using 3 tablespoons, or about 1.5 ounces, in an empty Auto cycle. Branded cleaner packs usually cost about $4 to $12, while citric acid treatments can cost only a few dollars per cleaning.
Before spending hundreds of dollars on a new dishwasher, run a water-hardness test. Test strips are inexpensive, and many local water utilities publish hardness ranges. If hardness is high, a whole-house softener or point-of-use treatment may be the actual fix. Detergent can reduce symptoms, but it cannot remove unlimited minerals from the system.
White film vs permanent etching
Cloudy glass has two common causes: removable mineral film or permanent etching. A simple field check is to wipe the glass with vinegar. If the haze comes off, it is likely hard-water film. If it does not, the glass may be etched from soft water, too much detergent, high heat, or long-term wear.
For removable film, improve water treatment, rinse aid, and cleaning maintenance. For etching, reduce detergent dose if using powder, avoid excessive heat settings, and stop pre-rinsing dishes until they are spotless.
Soft Water Needs Less Detergent, Not More
Soft water changes the equation. In very soft water, a full-strength pod can sometimes be more detergent than the load needs, especially if dishes are lightly soiled. That can leave a slick feel, visible residue, or long-term glass damage.
If your home has a water softener or naturally soft municipal water, powder may be the smarter choice because you can reduce the dose. Start with a modest amount in the main dispenser, then adjust based on results. If dishes come out clean without residue, do not add more detergent just because the dispenser has room.

Cycle Choice Matters More Than Most Homeowners Think
A premium pod needs enough time, water movement, and heat to dissolve fully and clean properly. If you run short or Express cycles every day, some pods may not fully dissolve. You may find gel or powder performs better on those short runs, or you may need to reserve pods for Auto, Normal, and Heavy cycles.
For baked-on, greasy, or mixed loads, use Auto or Heavy. These cycles give the detergent more time to break down soil and give the dishwasher sensors a better chance to respond. On a lightly used breakfast load, Normal or a shorter cycle may be fine.
Water temperature also matters. Many dishwashers perform best when hot water reaches the appliance promptly. In a kitchen far from the water heater, we often advise running the sink hot for 20 to 60 seconds before starting the dishwasher, especially in winter or in homes with long plumbing runs. You are not trying to waste water; you are trying to avoid starting the wash with a pipe full of cold water.

How to Load an LG Dishwasher So Detergent Can Work
Detergent cannot clean what spray water cannot reach. Overloading is the fastest way to make a good detergent look bad.
Load plates facing inward and downward toward the spray pattern. Keep bowls tilted so they do not hold wash water. Avoid nesting spoons. Do not let tall cutting boards, sheet pans, or pot handles block the spray arms. After loading, spin the spray arms by hand to confirm they rotate freely.
Put the detergent pod, powder, or gel in the LG detergent dispenser and close the lid. Do not place detergent loose in the tub unless your specific model manual says to do so. The dispenser opens at a designed point in the cycle, and that timing is part of the cleaning process.
Scrape dishes, but do not prewash them until they look clean. Modern detergents need soil, and soil-sensing dishwashers make better cycle decisions when the load reflects reality. A plate with sauce residue is fine. A plate with half a baked potato stuck to it is not.

Before comparing detergent brands, clean the dishwasher. On job sites and service callbacks, we check the filter, spray arms, drain path, and rinse-aid level before talking about brands.
Most homeowners should inspect the filter every 2 to 4 weeks, more often if the dishwasher handles heavy family use. Remove trapped food, rinse the filter under warm water, and reinstall it fully seated. A loose or dirty filter can recirculate debris and leave grit on dishes.
Spray arms should be checked for clogged holes. Mineral scale, seeds, and small food particles can block spray jets. If a spray arm cannot push water evenly, no detergent will perform correctly. Also check that labels from jars, plastic bits, and broken glass are not collecting near the sump.

2026 Cost Guide: What Clean Dishes Really Cost
For a household running one load per day, detergent cost can range from about $18 per year at the lowest powder pricing to more than $219 per year for high-priced premium pods. Most families land somewhere in the $75 to $150 per year range once rinse aid and periodic cleaner are included.
| Item | Typical 2026 Price | Annual Cost at 1 Load/Day | Best Value Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powder detergent | $0.05-$0.18 per load | $18-$66 | Soft water, adjustable dosing, budget control |
| Gel detergent | $0.08-$0.20 per load | $29-$73 | Short cycles and light soil |
| Budget pods | $0.18-$0.35 per load | $66-$128 | Routine loads where premium performance is not needed |
| Premium pods | $0.24-$0.60 per load | $88-$219 | Best overall cleaning and hard-water performance |
| Rinse aid | $4-$10 per bottle | Often $12-$60 | Drying, spotting control, hard-water support |
| Cleaner or citric acid | $4-$12 per treatment | About $16-$144 depending on frequency | Mineral and buildup control |
The cheapest detergent is not always the cheapest outcome. If a low-cost gel forces you to rerun loads, handwash glasses, or replace etched glassware, the savings disappear. But premium pods are not always necessary either. In soft water with light soil, a correctly dosed powder can be both cleaner and cheaper.

White film on dishes
Start with water hardness. Use a premium pod, fill rinse aid, raise the rinse-aid setting, and run a citric-acid cleaning cycle. If vinegar removes the film from a glass, you are likely dealing with mineral deposits. If the haze remains, look at etching, detergent overdose, and heat settings.
Greasy plates or food left behind
Use Auto or Heavy instead of Express. Check that spray arms spin freely, clean the filter, and avoid nesting bowls and utensils. If the load includes baked-on food, a premium pod or properly dosed powder will usually beat gel.
Pod not dissolving
Confirm the pod is in the detergent dispenser and that the dispenser door is not blocked by a pan or utensil. Use a longer cycle, make sure hot water reaches the dishwasher, and check that the spray arm is not obstructed. For repeated short-cycle use, switch to powder or gel.
Dishes are clean but wet
Fill the rinse-aid reservoir first. Use heated dry or extra dry settings if your model has them. Load plastics on the upper rack where appropriate and angle cup bottoms so water drains instead of pooling.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
Detergent changes, rinse aid, filter cleaning, spray-arm cleaning, loading adjustments, and citric-acid cleaning cycles are homeowner-level maintenance. You can usually work through those items in 15 to 45 minutes with no special tools. A water-hardness test is also a simple DIY step.
Hire a pro when the dishwasher is newly installed and has never cleaned correctly, when water remains in the bottom after the cycle, when the unit leaks, when the cabinet opening was modified, or when electrical or plumbing work is involved. Poor cleaning can come from a kinked drain hose, missing high loop or air gap, bad leveling, low water supply, or an installation that does not meet local requirements.

Permit rules vary by city and county. Some jurisdictions treat dishwasher replacement as simple appliance work. Others care about plumbing connections, air gaps, electrical circuits, and inspection requirements. In remodel work, we check the local code path before closing cabinets because a hidden drain or electrical mistake is much more expensive to fix after countertops and flooring are complete.
Our Practical Buying Recommendation
For most LG dishwasher owners, buy a premium pod or tablet, keep liquid rinse aid in the dispenser, and run Auto or Normal for everyday mixed loads. Choose Heavy for greasy cookware and baked-on food. Use powder if you have very soft water, want lower cost per load, or need to fine-tune detergent amount. Use gel mainly for short cycles and lightly soiled loads.
If you are seeing white film, cloudy glasses, or poor drying, do not keep switching detergent every week. Test water hardness, fill rinse aid, clean the filter, inspect the spray arms, and run a citric-acid cleaning cycle. If the dishwasher was recently installed or remodeled around, verify hot-water delivery, level mounting, drain routing, and code-required air gap or high-loop details.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best detergent for an LG dishwasher is the one matched to the water and the way the machine is used. In most homes, that is a premium enzyme pod plus rinse aid. In soft-water or budget-sensitive homes, it may be powder. Either way, the machine has to be clean, correctly loaded, and correctly installed before detergent can do its job.
Frequently Asked Questions
What detergent does LG recommend for its dishwashers?
Use only detergent made for automatic dishwashers. Do not use hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or laundry pods. For most LG owners, a premium dishwasher pod or tablet used in the detergent dispenser is the best default.
Are pods, powder, or gel best for an LG dishwasher?
Pods are best for most households because they are pre-measured and strong on mixed soil. Powder is best when you need dosing control, especially in soft water. Gel can work for short cycles and light loads but is usually weaker on baked-on food.
Can I use Cascade Platinum or Finish Quantum in an LG dishwasher?
Yes. Premium dishwasher pods or tablets such as Cascade Platinum Plus or Finish Quantum are appropriate for LG dishwashers when placed in the detergent dispenser and used with rinse aid.
Why does my LG dishwasher leave white film on dishes?
White film is often caused by hard water, low rinse aid, mineral buildup, blocked spray arms, or a dirty filter. Run a water-hardness test, fill rinse aid, clean the filter, and use a citric-acid cleaning cycle before replacing the dishwasher.
Do I still need rinse aid if my detergent pod includes it?
Yes. For best drying and spot control, keep the LG rinse-aid dispenser filled. The dispenser releases rinse aid at the correct point in the cycle, which a detergent pod cannot always duplicate.
Where should I put a dishwasher pod in an LG dishwasher?
Put the pod in the detergent dispenser and close the lid unless your specific LG manual says otherwise. Placing a pod loose in the tub can make it dissolve too early.
